Chunda Palace Hotel
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 25 April 2012

Next to the legendary Oberoi Udaivilas, lies Chunda Palace which I never thought would leave such a wonderful impression that I will write a review. However starting from the visit to their website (extremely aesthetic) to the eventual stay, it was nothing less that "expectations exceeded".

Overlooking Lake Pichola, Chunda Palace is certainly a place for those looking for royal ambiance at not so royal price. Udaipur is full of hotel options and what makes Chunda special is its location. Looking towardsthe hotel from Lake Pichola, one can't differentiate between Udaivilas and Chunda Palace given their close proximity and almost similar architecture. If that does not please you, the swimming pool overlooking the Lake along with the food options certainly will. The hotel definitely can boast one of a lavish buffet breakfast (normally included as part of the package). The rooms at Chunda are airy and comfortable. The recommended ones are those towards the front side - overlooking the Trident greens. While the bathroom at Chunda is as big as a standard room, the amenities fitted is the only annoying factor and will confuse you to the core. Thank god they have a terrific pool to address this concern! While the staff is courteous, they might take some time in responding to anything urgent wrt room service.

Last but not the least, do not forget to see the Udaipur skyline from the terrace of Chunda and wonder how the Palace under promises and over delivers.

Room Tip: Overlooking the Triden greens/ Lake

Chunda Palace is really just a delight. We were thrilled with the quality, cleanliness, and staff of the palace. We paid $120 and I would say the rooms could easily go for 3-5x that somewhere in US or Europe. Enormous room with 4-poster bed, separate sitting room and a really nice bathroom about the size of my home living room (they upgraded us, though peeking in the normal rooms, I could tell they were quite nice, too). High end bedding, spotless bathroom, turn-down service with cookies, nice breakfast buffet included. The hotel staff was exceedingly nice-- for example, one took us for a tour of the palace and even politely refused a tip at the end.

The palace itself is fairly new (1970s) and was just converted into a hotel in 2010-- everything is in very good shape. Marble is everywhere (the family owns a marble business) and the common spaces are really over the top, decorated heavily with colored tiles and mirrors. The views are awesome from the rooftop pool and restaurant. Hotel is a bit away from the tourist sites, but it's so lovely you'll want to spend a full evening there anyway.

Only slightly negative thing involved the restaurant. Though they had amazing food (get the chicken tikka masala! best we had the entire trip) and views, the prices were 50-100% higher than other nice places we ate at during the trip. Still worth it though for the views, but be prepared. We paid 4000 rupees ($80) for two appetizers, two entrees, four cocktails, and water.

This was a boutique-style hotel, but with palace-like decor and very clean. I stayed in a "palace room" for 3 nights, and the room was magnificent and very spacious. The restaurant was amazing, with delicious food that were average priced.

From the hotel, beautiful views of the lake could be seen.

Staff were friendly and accommodating.

Situated in a convenient location, but I found the simplest way of getting to the sights was via rickshaw.

If you are going during the colder months, ask for a heater in advance.

Staff were amazing. They were so helpful and friendly especially the restaraunt staff. One waiter 'Bhabesh deserves a special thanks. Price, quality and decor make this a five star hotel.

I would highly recommend the roof top restaurant for any couple planning to spend some quality time. The view from roof top restaurant to lake pichola is amazing. I found not too many menu items however service was really good.

I was impressed by the quality of the house keeping staff but you need to make a special mention if you want less spices in your vegetarian food. The location is excellent . One gets a lake view from the roof . For people who cannot afford five star hotel rates in Udaipur , this is a very good option.

When we chose the hotel, we were a little bit worried, considering the not too god evaluations written by other travelers. But we opted for it as a compromise between quality and price.
In the reality, the hotel is very very pleasant. The facilities are an old noble palace that has been completely restored a couple of years ago, all ancient frescos and stuccos and silvers are back to the old beauty and glory.
The only uncompleted part is the yard and garden still very dusty, but, good for them, the hotel overlooks the park of Trident Hotel, so that you see anyway lots of green.

The room is very spacious, a wide marble bathroom with Jacuzzi, the roof terrace has a 180 degrees view on the three Udaipur lakes and, of course to the Lake palace.
The breakfast, served in the terrace is rich, offers a variety of western and indian specialities and the ambient is so pleasant that represents the best daily start.
