Little Garden Guest House is very conveniently located in the City Palace area, literally 5-10 minutes walk to the entrance to the city palace and another few minutes to the Gangaur Ghat.
The cable car is only a short autorickshaw ride away, but can be reached on foot as well.
Despite being in the centre of the action - the Little Garden is tucked away in a little lane off the main road (which is well signposted), and allows for a comfortable sleep away from noise.
The rooms are tastefully decorated and very cozy, with nice hot shower and comfortable bed.
My wife was especially happy to find a hairdryer, which is quite a rare find in an Indian homestay.
Akshay and his family were fantastic hosts, very welcoming and accommodating - it was great to drink morning masala chai prepared by Akshay's mom at breakfast, and chat about current/upcoming festivals and different traditions with his sister Tina.
Whether you need a 5am car to drop you off at the airport, or change booking dates due to last minute circumstances, or just do the laundry - nothing is too much of a problem and can be arranged without hassle.
We had a great time staying with Akshay's family at the Little Garden and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Udaipur.

Room Tip: The rooms closer to the entrance have better WiFi reception

When we arrived at Little Garden Guest House we were given a very warm and enthusiastic welcome by Akshay. Akshay was clearly very proud of his little guest house and for good reason. He showed us our room and then took us around the rest of the facilities including the roof area where there are places to sit if you wish, he even showed us other rooms that had just been cleaned after the previous guests had left.

All the rooms are immaculately clean, and very tastefully decorated with framed photographs that his father had expertly coloured. We met other members of Akshay's family including his parents and sister, all were very friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were delicious and we were even shown how they made the tasty stuffed chapatis.

The location was very handy too and within walking distance of most of the interesting sites. Nothing was too much to ask for. He also recommended an excellent restaurant just two minutes walk away called the Whistling Teal where they served some of the tastiest curries we had whilst in India. Akshay was also keen to hear our comments about his guest house and take advice on any possible improvements, although it was very difficult to fault!! Would definitely recommend this place.

I don't know where to start with my praise for the Little Garden guesthouse and I have traveled a lot and stayed in a range of places (hundreds) from five star plus palaces to backpackers' dorm rooms; The Little Garden Guest House is certainly at the front of the pack!

I think I should start with the genuine warm welcome we had when we arrived on the morning train from Agra after a long journey. Akshay had some breakfast prepared for us - a delicious biryani and the best masala chai we had in all of India (I think we tried about 20 or so versions - can we have the recipe??). We also discovered a beautiful, spotless room - simple but charming with everything we could need. In fact, our criteria for all the hotels and guesthouses we stayed in during our ten days in India were: clean, quiet, bathroom with toilet and shower, wifi (or internet) access and under about 40 euros per night including breakfast for two and taxes.

Our room at the Little Garden ticked all the boxes but in fact all those things were not nearly as important as the welcome we had, the possibility to get to know Akshay and his family during our short stay and to have Akshay transmit his enthusiasm and openness to us. And of course, he was able to answer all our questions about Udaipur and India. At the end of our stay (just two nights - but the highlight of our trip) we felt like we were a small part of the family.

In addition, we met some charming fellow travelers from Germany and Ireland!

The Little Garden has three rooms around a 'little garden' in an authentic haveli behind the city palace. We were able to walk to all the sights while there (City Palace, markets, temple, etc.).

So Akshay and your family, thank you again for making our experience in India such a good one. The only thing we missed was having lunch or dinner with Akshay and his family - so we definitely have to come back! And maybe also have Teena or her mom give us some cooking lessons.

A few things I would recommend: walk out to the end of the peninsula on the other side of the footbridge to the Hanuman Mandir about one half hour before the sunset and watch the colors change on the City Palace across the water. Another tip: instead of taking the one-hour boat rides that make you go through the City Palace, and you want a cheaper option, go to the boat stand at Lal Ghat for 30-minute boat rides for 200 rupees (no stops). Final tip, if you have dinner at the top of the Mayur restaurant you might be able to listen to the worshipers at the Jagdish temple across the way. You have a beautiful view of the temple if you sit at the edge. Also, ask to go to the very top of the restaurant - there is a small viewing platform from where you have a 360-degree view of Udaipur.

If you stay here, I am sure you will enjoy yourself as much as we did. We are looking forward to coming back to Udaipur and staying with Akshay and his family. Thank you again for such a warm welcome.

Greeted warmly by the family and shortly after by Akshay.Comfortable beds in traditionally decorated rooms, which we saw are spacious and spotlessly clean as are the bathrooms, with attention to detail the theme here. See them .They are as i say. Set back about 60 yards from the main road up a quiet little alley .The guest house is within striking distance of the city palace, old town, lake and more.Once again the hospitality and assistance here are second to none, even when we left at 5 30 in the morning.Value for money is guaranteed here . Stay here and you will not regret it . Great home stay . Highly recommended.

Many thanks to Akshay and his family for the lovely stay! My husband and I stayed here with our elderly parents for 3 nights in Feb 2014.

In many ways, this was the most authentic Indian experience we have had in India, in spite of the fact that my husband and I have lived in Mumbai for two years and also stayed at many homestays.

ACCOMMODATION:
The quality of the accommodation was truly excellent. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. We also loved the fact that each room is clearly customised and tastefully decorated with local art pieces and vintage items that reflect a unique style that is quintessentially Rajasthani and Indian. The quality of the bed/mattress is also very good, ensuring a comfortable, good night's sleep.

Each room comes with its own bathroom and hot shower (note: it takes around 15 mins for the water to heat up, but once it is ready, it IS HOT). Akshay, upon feedback from earlier guests, had included basic toiletries, bathmats and a hairdryer within.

Rooms were not cleaned and tidied every day. But I am sure if we had requested so, it would have been done.

FOOD:
The homecooked food was EXCELLENT. We ate at many places, but suffice to say, Akshay's mum's cooking is the Gold Standard that we will always use to benchmark others!
Akshay’s mum cooked with a very refined, delicate and balanced touch. The dishes she churned out were light (not too oily or salty), tasty and extremely fragrant. Ditto for his father's chai! Even our parents, who were not great fans of Indian food, enjoyed everything.

HOSPITALITY:
Akshay and his family's hospitality made a huge difference: warm, generous, humourous and very real. One thing I was initially uncomfortable with was that Akshay’s dad and sister, Teena, would sit at a corner of the room and watched us eat. But once I got over the awkwardness, I found their company to be extremely enjoyable. They always made sure you have enough to eat, and Teena would explain each dish and how to make it.

LOCATION:
Nestled in a little bylane away the main street, this place is a little haven devoid of the constant hooting and tooting of Indian traffic. When you go up to the roof top, you will get a pretty good view of the City Palace, one of the main highlights of Udaipur.

Out onto the streets, you will find plenty of shops that will satisfy your varied desires – from Indian clothing to handmade paper products to local snacks. The main attractions of the City Palace, the lakes and the bazaar are all within walking distance. Whilst you are there, do check out Shiva Handicrafts near the guest house. Babu, who runs the shop, is a sweet and gentle soul, who will patiently explain and show you his quality handmade leather and paper products. We ended up buying a large photo album and 5 notebooks from him!

AKSHAY:
Akshay is a very hardworking, earnest and genuine chap. He also seems to know every other person in Udaipur! Based on this observation, we decided to hire him as our City Palace tour guide and it was great. Akshay knows the City Palace inside out, given his linkages with the Royal family (you should ask him about it) and frequent tours of the place. I often resist hiring a guide because many spout nonsense, but Akshay is of a different calibre altogether. He gave us great insights into the City Palace and explained things that cannot be found in guidebooks. Most enlightening.

If we ever return to Udaipur (we intend to), we will most definitely return to Little Garden Guest House!

Akshay and his family are wonderful hosts. I arrived early in the morning but was greeted with Masala tea and breakfast. The rooms are impeccably decorated in traditional Rajasthan style with the most modern facilities. I didn't appreciate the comfort of the bed or the western style bathroom until I traveled further into India. And you can see the Udaipur City palace from their roof top. Akshay was wonderful in getting transportation to the Ranakpur Jain Temple and the airport very early in the morning. He also introduced me to the local yogi so I could schedule a yoga class. One of the three nights I stayed there I took a cooking class from Teena. Not only was her cooking the best in India, but she was a delight, telling stories about the Udaipur culture. I also had the pleasure of eating dinner with the Rao family. They made me feel right at home. You couldn't ask for a better location, it's close to the Lake, hiking, and all the top tourist spots in Udaipur. I definitely would stay at the Little Garden Guest House again.

little garden is without doubt the most beautiful and value for money b&b i have ever stayed at. not only are the rooms stylish and individually and lovingly decorated with an attention to detail i have not found elsewhere; facilities are top notch and the beds very comfortable - the love and passion akshay and his family put into their home can be felt everywhere.

you will be spoiled with the most delicious homecooked fresh food and chai you can imagine and whatever activities (visiting sites, sunrise hikes, riding, shopping,...) you wish to undertake akshay will make sure you will only get the best.

i know this sounds surreal and you will not believe it until you've experienced it - so if you're headed to udaipur there is really only one place to stay: little garden.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Little Garden Guesthouse is nestled at the base of Udaipur's renowned City Palace in the heart of the Old City. Each room is individually fitted out with tasteful and eclectic furniture and fittings, most of which are family heirlooms. Fair-trade women's cooperative handcrafted bed covers, cushions and curtains complement the decor. The street in which the 250 year old heritage house or haveli is located, Kavi Rao Mohan Singh, is named after an ancestor of the family and is a comfortable sanctuary just off Bhattiyani Chouhtta, a fascinating market street lined with handicrafts stalls. We invite you to nest and rest in one of our two spacious bedrooms (11x17ft). You can curl up reading in cushioned bay-windows or sprawl out for a siesta on firm double beds with freshly laundered linen. Each room is decorated with eclectic handicrafts, antiques and textiles. Little Garden is newly renovated, so our bathroom facilities are clean and reliable. Each room has an en-suite bathroom with western toilet and a running hot shower available 24 hours a day. We will happily provide clean towels and new bed linen at your request. In addition to our simple but charming heritage rooms, Little Garden has two spacious terraces from which panoramic views of the City Palace and verdant Aravali Hills can be taken in. It is a perfect place to experience the nightly sound and light show which sets the Palace ablaze, watch the buzzing rooftop life of the Old City, or rest-up with a book, drink or meal happily provided by your hosts (upon request). Of course, our little garden courtyard is also a lovely shady place to pass time. The traditional layout of our home (several rooms arranged around open courtyards) is perfect for the independently minded traveller who also wants to experience the life and hospitality of a local family. You may come and go from our rooms as you please as they each have a private entrance from the little garden courtyard. As our family are descendants of a renowned poet who served in the royal court of Mewar and shared a close relationship with the then King (Maharana), our home was gifted to our ancestor by the royal family. It is thus located very centrally, just 5 minutes walk to the palace and other heritage highlights of Udaipur, such as: Jagdish Temple- Built from marble in C17th and dedicated to 'Jagdish' or Vishnu (Lord and protector of the universe), this is Udaipur's most notable and beautiful Hindu temple. Gangaur Ghat - A complex of Shiva temples perched on the bank of Pichola Lake where the annual Gangaur festival unique to Rajasthan is commemorated. Also a wonderful spot to observe the rituals of daily life, the gorgeous Lake Palace and Jag Mandir island. Ayurvedic Hospital- Provides free consultations, daily yoga classes and mud therapy.Rose Garden- The favoured place for locals to picnic and exercise. Many handicrafts, vegetable and spice markets. Who we are: Hi there, my name is Akshay. I recently established 'Little Garden Guesthouse' to provide an income for my retired Mum and Dad, assist in maintaining our heritage property, and to entertain my love of imparting local knowledge!
