“Little tired look”
Reviewed 1 December 2008

Maybe it was caught off guard. We arrived from Udaivillas Hotel so no Rose Petals for us. Reception would match any 3/4 star hotel. Rooms very small, but comfortable. Nice touch of sending me 20 red roses and a get well card. I was not well. It was my wifes 50th and the the roses were meant for her. Some cross wires I suppose.
The staff greeted my wife belated happy Birthday and asked if liked the Roses! The roof top restaurant has a limited vegetarian menu. Views are good, but that you can get from many locations in Udaipur. The Staff were freindly and also prepared a lemon drink for me to settle my tummy. I would not rush back to this hotel.

My parents and I spent three days there in late September. The whole property has been restored a couple of years ago and is back in great shape.

We had two ground floor, City Palace-facing rooms (115 and 114 I believe) which were large enough to fit, in addition to a queen size bed, two small chaiselongues and a desk with the most breathtaking view ever.

Facilities are very good: there's a pool with two jacuzzis with, again, an incredible view of the palace and a well-equipped gym; the restaurants are both very good (in the non-Indian restaurant try to go for the table in the niche, where the view is best). The rooftop terrace is closed during monsoon season I believe, but it's still worth exploring the terrace in the evenings.

A special mention goes to service. It was good in all the Taj hotels we stayed in (Rambagh and Umaid Bhawan), but at the Lake Palace it was best: efficient, timely and most of all unintrusive. I asked for a DVD to be delivered to my room, and when I came out of the shower I found the DVD I requested, with a bag of complimentary popcorn and two complimentary cans of Diet Coke.

During our stay we also visited Rajvilas (as when we booked we couldn't decide where to stay): yes it is more opulent - all shiny marbles and baroque fabrics - and the rooms are more spacious and luxurious, but if it is a charming, romantic, fairy-tale setting you're looking for then the Lake Palace it should be.

We stayed at the Lake palace for two nights for our honeymoon and savoured every minute of it. The service was incredible. The view from the rooftop restaurant in the evening was breathtaking. The hindu prayers coming from the mandir (Jagdish) across the lake added to the surrealness of the atmosphere. We actually enjoyed the food of the Indian restaurant more than the rooftop restaurant, not to take away from the latter.

Only downside was the frigid temperature of the pool.

If you can handle the sticker shock of the price for even a night, it is definitely worth the experience, and it justifies its consistent high ranking in world travel magazines...

A last minute decision to pay a fortune for a room in a truly iconic hotel proved to be a little silly.

The room we had (231) was smaller than the spare room in a dolls house; the need to get bodies on beds we supposed. Then, their key restaurant, a rooftop one, was unable to accomodate us, so we dined in Victorian, and Un-Indian splendour inside; though the Vegetarian Thali was excellent.

The public rooms and the pool are pretty classy; as is the boat ride to the Hotel, and the entrance. They cascade rose petals on you (which the Devi Garh does also). Service is very attentive indeed, so full marks there. The breakfast room, and the brekker that goes with it, is terrific

All in all, over-priced and over-crowded. The Heritage Hotels in the City Palace, which allow you to gaze at the Lake Palace and feel smug about the misguided rich, are eccentric, wonderful and much better value; we moved to the Fateh Prakesh there and loved it.

And the Devi Garh outside Udaipur is real gold plated class. In a wise world, the Lake Palace would struggle; but it won't because of the water!

If you have read any of my other reviews on this site you will know that I am not exactly easy to please.

But the TLP is the business. As good or better than any hotel I have ever stayed in. Magical location . Fabulous entrance by boat with a shower of rose petals. The decor is simply beautiful and the whole thing is understated class. We ate at the standard restaurant and also at the restaurant on the roof where just 20 people eat great food under the stars while taking in the breathtaking view of the main palace on the shore opposite. It was Diwali and we were treated to a non stop firework show as a bonus.

We spent time in the small pool area and its just perfect.

The service throughout is impeccable.

I cant think of a thing to criticise. [ well ok it isnt cheap]

One of our fellow guests was a well known rock star and at the TLP it seems even Mick gets some satisfaction.

Taj palace in udaipur is one of the best place that u could spend on this earth, taj is suited for its adaptability in various use for example, it is the hot venue for grand weddings. We can look into the incredibility of natural rajasthan. As the lake surrounds the hotel it gives a complete sense of mind pleasure in silence.

u will definitely enjoy the trip so go ahead and have a wonderful stay

Stayed at the Lake Palace for 2 nights & had a wonderful time. The experience begins with its private dock & boat ride across the lake. Service is very attentive, including a separate boat for your luggage. The boat is not as luxurious as those used by the Bangkok Peninsula, but nice enough. You then walk through a shower of rose petals into the lobby.

Rooms are nicely appointed, but not very large. Had a lake view room overlooking the City Palace. Overall the feeling is like being on a very exclusive cruise ship. None of the spaces (pool, spa, etc.) are as large as in other Taj palace hotels, but everything is very well appointed. The one difference is that there are countless beautiful terraces, balconies hidden throughout the hotel.

Service is exceptional. The staff goes out of its way to make you comfortable & remember your needs. Little touches were especially thoughtful: flute player in the courtyard in the morning, shadow dancing in the courtyard in the evening, complimentary hot popcorn & sodas delivered with free DVD's. Also took the historical tour (including complimentary champagne & canapes in the bar afterward) and the Sunset cruise .

This is the 4th Taj hotel that I stayed in during this trip & I have become a huge fan of the chain.
