Reviewed 19 November 2011

The Oberoi Udaivilas is definitely the very best hotel I have ever stayed at.

My mother advised me NOT to STAY at the TAJ LAKE PALACE because of the small rooms, touristy atmosphere, arrogant service and tour groups - and she was proven right. What is that fuzz about the Lake Palace all about? Once I saw it from Udaipur City Palace tucked in the lake I was glad I did not have a reservation there. It is not as impressive anymore as on the glossy pictures in travel catalogues! Glance over the lake and find Oberoi in the back and then tell me your preference....

So I CHOSE the OBEROI UDAIVILAS instead without having heard much about it and I was rewarded with an unique experience that is beyond all luxury I had ever experienced. This is the real place to be in Udaipur and in India, it is a real palace.

The property is huge, there are gardens to stroll around and pools to slurge. From the garden and pool there are great view of the lake, Lake Palace, City Palace and Garden Palace, at day and at night. They even have a historic complex within the compound and visits can be organised. The Spa is very inviting and the food at the restaurant is excellent while the service is very friendly.

Rooms are very comfy, the bed is a dream of comfort, the bathroom is a little marble palace and the shower is nicely powerful. Choose a room with semi-private pool, its amazing and well worth it!!

Overall the service you receive from this hotel's staff is truly the best I have received. What I like most about it is the genuine and warm service mentality of all employees but especially doormen and front desk. Probably the "shared tip" system makes the atmosphere unique. In India people always seem to want money, at this hotel it was the first time I didnt feel scanned for money. At the end you may put your contribution into the tipbox at check out; and you will generously enjoy doing that. Rewards for performance.

Another personal touch is Jan, the General Manager who welcomes every guest personally during dinner at the terrace restaurant.

I am a fullrange very price/value driven traveller, I stay at low- as well as high-end properties. The Oberoi Udaipur is the most expensive hotel I have every stayed and it is also the very best. If performance is premium I am happy to pay a premium for it. Oberoi Udaivilas is definetly worth it! Give yourself a treat.

Room Tip: go for the semi-private pool rooms

Absolutely gorgeous property. We had a lake view room with a semi private infinity pool and a private courtyard with lounges to relax on. This view over Lake Pichola is stunning, especially in the evening when the City Palace is lighted. Our room was beautiful and comfortable. We loved the beautiful Indian accessories in the decor. We were lucky to be able to spend our final day in India just staying on property and enjoying the setting.
The public spaces are beautiful. The food is delicious and the outdoor restaurant setting is fabulous- again the lake view.
Enjoyed the complementary yoga classes.
Udaipur is a fantastic city- not as hectic as some of the other cities we visited. This hotel adds to the enjoyment of the city. Stay here if you can!!

Arriving at the Oberoi Udaivilas by night was the most jaw-dropping hotel arrival experience I had ever had. (I’d yet to experience the arrival at FS Tented Camp…) Upon exiting the vehicle, you enter a world of torchlit courtyards, candelit domes, onyx pools, and gold leaf, and cobalt alcoves. It’s all so fantastic that it is just one hair short of Disney . . . but the quality of the craftsmanship and its roots in Mewari vernacular make this a place of absolutely transcendent beauty, the highest quality build of any of the properties we experienced in India.

We’d booked the lake view rooms that open onto the semi-private moat-like pool that surrounds the resort, but thanks to Virtuoso were upgraded to suites with private pools. I did take a look at one of the original rooms we’d booked, and while they are nice, they are not especially spacious, and are not as beautifully furnished as the suites, which really are impeccably furnished and designed, worth the extra spend if necessary.

As at the Oberoi Amarvilas, everywhere you look there’s some amazing tribute to design features of the royal architecture of Udaipur—floral designs made of inlaid reflective metal just as you see decorating the local palace, and sun motifs derived from the ruling family’s insignia. I found myself wanting to explore and wander through the covered walkways, the lush grounds, the courtyards and galleries and domed chambers—it just goes on and on, with fountains here, a swimming pool there, with peacocks frequently the only inhabitants in sight.

Our favorite area was the pool deck at the spa, where you have tremendous views across Lake Pichola to the (ungainly white block that is the) Lake Palace, and much more impressive, the City Palace rising up above the water. On the ground floor of the pool deck, there’s an adequate, if not especially large or impressive, fitness center.

Service was perfect throughout—from meals to housekeeping to the pool.

We arranged a guide through the concierge for sightseeing in Udaipur, which was quite easily the cleanest, least touristy, and most enjoyable of any of the major Indian cities we visited. Even so, the atmosphere of the Oberoi Udaivilas is so otherworldly and unique, so unprecedented, that I wanted to spend most of my time there—whether in the incredible comfort and quality of the suite, the privacy of the large pool, or the aesthetic dazzle of the public areas.

An ultimate vacation we were looking for & we got it being treated like maharajas. Everything is superb about Udai Vilas in fact is much better than Lake Palace Hotel. Food was extremely good Open air Restaurant had folk singing & dancing & free mosquito bites. The bar served us with exceptional tit bits with drinks like cashew nuts & almonds viw from anywhere was extraordinary. Spa was really making us stressfree. Only sad thing wsa we were three of us Myself, My wife & my daughter 26 years old. She was not allowed to stay with us which turned out to be very expensive. Limos are there fro to & fro Airport.

What can one say about this hotel which has not already been said?
Our 3rd visit and everything the same - fantastic!
Great room with a pool accessible from the bedroom.
Fantastic food and lots of things to do.
We walked through the town centre for Divali and it was amazing to see the lights and so many freindly people just enjoying being there with all their families.
Some friend wanted to get a reservation for lunch at Wildlower Hall but were told it was full (Divali). Even the Oberoi Cecil in Shimla could not manage it for them. To the rescue - Jan - the GM of Udaivilas. He phoned and persuaded them to find space (for 6 people!). A real star!
How nice when things turn out to be what you remember them to be.

Room Tip: Book a poolside room
