The Oberoi Udaivilas is definitely the very best hotel I have ever stayed at.
My mother advised me NOT to STAY at the TAJ LAKE PALACE because of the small rooms, touristy atmosphere, arrogant service and tour groups - and she was proven right. What is that fuzz about the Lake Palace all about? Once I saw it from Udaipur City Palace tucked in the lake I was glad I did not have a reservation there. It is not as impressive anymore as on the glossy pictures in travel catalogues! Glance over the lake and find Oberoi in the back and then tell me your preference....
So I CHOSE the OBEROI UDAIVILAS instead without having heard much about it and I was rewarded with an unique experience that is beyond all luxury I had ever experienced. This is the real place to be in Udaipur and in India, it is a real palace.
The property is huge, there are gardens to stroll around and pools to slurge. From the garden and pool there are great view of the lake, Lake Palace, City Palace and Garden Palace, at day and at night. They even have a historic complex within the compound and visits can be organised. The Spa is very inviting and the food at the restaurant is excellent while the service is very friendly.
Rooms are very comfy, the bed is a dream of comfort, the bathroom is a little marble palace and the shower is nicely powerful. Choose a room with semi-private pool, its amazing and well worth it!!
Overall the service you receive from this hotel's staff is truly the best I have received. What I like most about it is the genuine and warm service mentality of all employees but especially doormen and front desk. Probably the "shared tip" system makes the atmosphere unique. In India people always seem to want money, at this hotel it was the first time I didnt feel scanned for money. At the end you may put your contribution into the tipbox at check out; and you will generously enjoy doing that. Rewards for performance.
Another personal touch is Jan, the General Manager who welcomes every guest personally during dinner at the terrace restaurant.
I am a fullrange very price/value driven traveller, I stay at low- as well as high-end properties. The Oberoi Udaipur is the most expensive hotel I have every stayed and it is also the very best. If performance is premium I am happy to pay a premium for it. Oberoi Udaivilas is definetly worth it! Give yourself a treat.
