The Oberoi Udaivilas
Ranked #3 of 165 Hotels in Udaipur
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 19 August 2008

By the time we arrived in Udaipur we had stayed in three other Oberoi hotels during our visit to India and so were ready for the excellent levels of service and courtesy. This hotel is spread over a huge area and both hotel and the grounds are simply gorgeous. We particularly liked the animal sanctuary, which is situated within the grounds.. We chose to stay in a lake facing room with semi-private pool which was wonderfully relaxing. Even though the waters of Lake Pichola were low, the view was still beautiful and it was terrific to step from our own private little courtyard into the pool which runs the length of 10 other similar rooms.

As with all the Oberois, the staff are only interested in making each guest's stay as comfortable and as memorable as possible.
There is definitely a reason why this hotel (indeed the whole Oberoi group) has been ranked amongst the best in the world!

Having more than 400 rooms this is by far the best hotel in the world...the great views, the huge lawns, the palatial setting just takes you in...i went there for my honeymoon and the experience was tereffic..the staff is extremely helpful and the service is prompt..it took us almost 2 days to see the entire hotel and every nook and corner was fabulous with attention to detail given to each section of the hotel..Since this is an off season for the hotel the main pool was under maintainance but the spa pool was equally great with a scenic backdrop..we had a room with a garden view and there were peacocks in our garden at any given point in time...just marvelous...the food was also excellent and the rooms are huge compared to other hotels..

We have stayed at beautiful hotels in the past, but this far exceeds any of them. Udaivilas is spectacular. Can't fault the service or anything else at the hotel. Staff are extremely helpful; food is exceptional, especially the Indian food. Our only complaint, and it is minor, is that a couple of the waiters in the restaurant have a tendency to constantly ask if your food is OK and to try to make conversation when you really want some privacy. Otherwise, I can fully understand why this hotel is rated so highly in the major travel magazines. Do yourself a favor and stay here even though it is expensive.

The Udaivilas is definetly one of the greatest hotels I have ever been to. Set at the famous lake in Udaipuar (where the James bond movie was shot) it has less than 100 rooms, most excellent service, lots of space, great food, marble everywhere.

The rooms are just great to the smallest detail. Great white marble bathrooms, private garden.

The staff is very friendly and always helpful. The central tipping systems avoids the nuissance of feeling to have to tip everybody everytime.

The hotel was built only a few years ago on a huge site on the West bank of Lake Pichola straight across from the Lake Palace and City Palace. The hotel rooms are off long corridors which are open to the gardens and the rooms are huge, with private courtyards. The grounds are full of water cascades, pavilions and features and it took us about 30 minutes just to walk around the gardens admiring the flowers and views.
Service,as you would expect is impeccable, and the restaurant food was excellent. In terms of design, appearance , service and location this hotel is hard to beat.
My only moan is that prices for some things were downright silly. A 40 minute trip round the lake costs 2500 rupees. From the other side of the lake it costs 350! It is a short tuctuc trip to excellent retaurants or into the city centre so you are not tied to eating there.

Flew into Mumbai, had a 5 hour wait for the connecting flight which wasn't great as all the lounges are closed. Jet airways connecting flight was excellent and Udaipur airport (very new) was very effficient.
We were met by a charming driver in a Jeep from the Hotel, who had cold towels and water, which was a very welcoming start to the holiday. The arrival at the hotel was fantastic, the jeep dropped us at a jetty and we arrived at the hotel by boat, awesome. The hotel buildings are quite stunning.
We were very early at the hotel (about 8am), but the room was available immediately, another perfect start after a long journey from London. We had wanted a Lake view room (they have direct access to a semi-provate pool), but there were none available for the whole of our stay for us to upgrade to, and whilst the hotel did everything it could to help us, because we would have had to change room twice, we decided to stay in our allocated room (312), which as it turned out was perfect as it opened onto the main pool.
The room was very nice, very big and comfy bed, well appointed bathroom with free standing bath and seperate large shower, TV has pleanty of sport channels. I object to paying for internet access (£11 a day), I think that these days, a modern 5* hotel should have free, and wireless internet, this hotel does not have wireless and you have to pay even in the business centre.
As our stay was only one week, we wanted to have a relaxing holiday with some "light" sightseeing, the manager, Torsten, who had introduced himself when we arrived, discussed with us what we wanted to see/do and organised a perfect excursion itinery, with an excellent guide.
We spent our time at the hotel at the main pool and the spa pool, both are lovely, with the pool service at both, quite outstandng, (water, bookmarks, water spray, sun cream).
We ate breakfast at the hotel every day, it is buffet style plus some a la carte options, the breakfast is very good, not amazing, but very good, with fresh juices, pastries, cereals, cold meats, fruit etc.
We ate dinner at the hotel every night ( a mix of room service and restaurant) bar one, the food, a selection of local and international cuisine, was excellent, as was the service. I thought the wine was expensive.
We ate lunch at a near(ish) restaurant (Ambrai), recommended by Torsten, I thought the food (local) was every bit as good as the hotel, and, as you would expect much cheaper, but clearly you take more of a "risk" if you eat outside the hotel.
We also ate dinner at the Lake Palace, which, whilst the food was good, the 3500Rps (£43) minimum charge per head for the food only, is a complete rip off as there is no way a couple can eat that value of food unless you are monster eaters !!
My partner had a spa treatment, which she said was fantastic, the treatments seemed to be ok priced (£50 for 1 hour treatments).
The gym has 2 treadmills, a bike and cross-trainer as well as a decent selection of resistance machines (upper and lower body) and some free weights (up to 50lbs).
Checkout was very efficient, it was great tto be able to have breakfast in the room before our early departure.
Return flight to Mumbai was fine, but a word of warning for Mumbai t/f's, the International Terminal is seperate from the domestic terminal, they are connected by a bus which only runs every 30 mins (it is prob a 15 min journey), so be prepared for a potential wait and also there are a lot of security checks at Mumbai, so allow yourself plenty of time.
To sum up, it is a stunning hotel, with great staff, superb management, great pools, spa, good gym, good food, it is easy to understand why it has won so many awards.

Every Oberoi Hotel belongs in a different league to other chains, but this really is special. Everything faultless and exceptional.

Add the views of the Lake and Palaces, and the wildlife (especially the birds from the Pool Suites), and you can understand why this wins prizes.
