“we were treated like royality”
Reviewed 13 February 2009

we spent part of our honeymoon here last month. we stayed at 4 oberoi properties on the trip, and this was by far our favourite. unlike the reviewer from camden, we had booked a premier room, and what do you know-they upgraded us to a suite!!! we had 3 nights of pure indulgence, and felt like royality. we had room service a couple of times-who wouldn't when you have your own dining room, and an outdoor dining pavillion next to your private pool. the food and service was exceptional. the chef came along too to make sure it was perfect.

we went to the spa one afternoon, and had multiple treatments. the therapists we would highly rate, very highly.

as for it being confusing and widely spaced out. yes to being spread out over beautiful gardens and pools, but confusing-don't think so...i wish we had gone to the taj lake palace just to compare, but honestly we couldn't have been more pleased with the oberoi in general. i can agree with some of the service complaints, but feel it is more of an oberoi thing rather than the specific hotel or staff. they make the service so complicated at times(as noted below re the coke)that is does become almost farcical in execution. they could simplify some of the serving procedures to be sure.

we would highly recommend this hotel to anyone-especially if you can bag a suite...

This is a magnificent property. The rooms and baths are large and spacious but it ' s the grounds, and especially the architecture that knocks your socks off! We have traveled the world and stayed at many of the finest and rarely can a hotel compete with the sheer beauty of the Udaivilas.
Stayed for 5 nights which was great. We found the food and service to be top notch--after just 1 day the chef would come to our table and make suggestions, hear our comments etc. We ate outside on the terrace 2 nights and they surround you with charcoal heaters to keep you warm. Because its dark, you are given a flashlight so you can read the menu.

We heartily recommend the Udaivilas.

We stayed in a premiere room on the second floor for 2 nights in mid-December 2008. The room was spacious, bed comfortable, and view the from the balcony was stunning (especially the sunrise over Lake Pichola). The bathroom was large with separate glass shower, clawfoot tub next to the window, separate dressing area. The hotels grounds are beautifully landscaped and peaceful. There was a 50% cancellation due to the Mumbai attacks and as a result the hotel felt a bit empty. The staff was friendly and helpful - perhaps a bit more than necessary - but we felt it was due to the fact that there were not many guests at the hotel.

We also appreciated the Oberoi policy of not encouraging nor accepting individual tips, but rather waiting until check out and leaving a tip that would be parsed out to everyone. It made our time here and at the Amarvilas much less pressured, while at the other hotels we stayed at, everyone was constantly asking if they could be of service and did we like the service, over and over, to the point that it felt invasive, and that it was all in the interest of getting a tip from us, which ultimately became a turn-off and something everyone should be prepared for when traveling to India.

On our first night, we had dinner at the Indian restaurant on the terrace. The views/ambience are magnificent but the food was mediocre at best. We had planned to have dinner at the Lake Palace on our second night but access to their restaurant is restricted to hotel guests only (a recently imposed restriction). Instead, at our guide's suggestion, we ate in town at a local vegetarian restaurant located in a heritage hotel. The food was delicious not to mention the price ($10 total for 3 people). It was a unique and authentic experience which was a nice change from the Western luxury hotel chain dinners. Breakfast was included in our room rate and was good but not as good as the Amarvilas. The day we left, the hotel packed us a complimentary lunch for our 5 hour drive to Jodhpur which was a nice touch.

The hotel gift shop has a very nice selection and quite a few pieces from the famed Gem Palace in Jaipur. Shoppers beware, if you find something that you like from the Gem Palace selection, buy it, otherwise you will not find it at the Gem Palace in Jaipur or the other Gem Palace outposts in the Oberoi hotels as all locations carry different pieces. All in all, lovely hotel and would highly recommend it.

For complicated reasons, we had to change from the Lake Palace Hotel to the Amarvilas for the last night of our stay in Udaipur. Big disappointment! What is all the fuss about this hotel? There are so many things they haven't got right here. Most of the rooms are a very long walk away from the main hotel, the signage is appalling so it is really difficult to find your way around in the evening - they've spent a lot of money on this place but not well. Yes it has great views (of the Lake Palace which is a much better hotel!) We were there just after the bombing and it was almost empty but still no upgrade was offered - it would have cost them little but given a lot of good will. The spa was nicely laid out but the treatments not spectacular and expensive. The pool area is lovely and much photographed but not enough to make it worth staying here a long way from the centre rather than at the Lake Palace.

A simply stunning hotel and service to match. We've travelled to quite a few different countries but this Hotel stands in our mind as the best.
The service is very friendly, professional, attentive and not overbearing... perfect.
The Hotel was full when we arrived but we felt that there was always plenty of space for each guest whether by the Pool or in the Bar.
The Pool is a beautiful oasis away from the manic streets outside of the Hotel. After travelling through India for 3 weeks it was a welcome tonic to relax and unwind.
The Bar is fantastic. The decor is superb and the cocktails are simply superb. We ordered an Espresso Martini and an Apple Martini and these were on a par with best we have tasted. They came with fresh warm cashews. We would recommend going to the Hotel simply for the Bar, but alas they don't serve guests who are not staying in the Hotel to preserve the quality of the experience for those who are staying at the Hotel.
We were sad to leave...

Premier lake view rooms were spacious, nicely decorated, have an efficient bathroom and direct access to a shared infinity pool. Service was above average although I've experienced better at the Four Seasons (not due in Udaipur until 2012 I was told). Sometimes the service was a little vacant and other times it was over the top i.e. they insist on serving coke via a glass jug instead of pouring directly into the glass which guarantees the coke is flat by the time it reaches your glass - talk about silly! Grounds were nice and having seen the Lake Palace, admittedly from afar I am confident we made the right choice to stay at the Oberoi. I would recommend this hotel but would not describe it as value for money although the options are very limited at this location. This is certainly NOT one of the best hotels in Asia in my opinion although it arguably should be given the price. Recommended but not blow away.

Having stayed at the Lake Palace, this is a precipitous drop straight back to earth.

This hotel sprawls over the shore of Lake Pichola. It is a 15 minute car ride away from the city centre and a 40-minute ride from the airport. It is a new build, but resembles a palace.

Welcome
Confused. We were left standing, wondering who was going to take our luggage and us to our rooms for a little while. The security is good thoug, with the entrance security guard checking our car with a bomb detector(!).

Room
We had a lakeview premier room. We complained that our "lakeview" room did not have any part of the lake to view, as it was obscurred by trees. There are two sections of "lakeview" rooms, and the ones that have a clear, unobstructed views are definitely preferrable.

Large, with a wonderful bathroom and slipper bath beside the window. I don't like the decor or the lighting much - kind of feels like an early 1990s room that has had an incomplete 2000s facelift.

The bed is comfortable, but not great. The TV is flatscreen, but of poor quality. We had a beautiful terrace with bourgainvillias crawling over the walls and the row of rooms share a large semi-private pool that is heated and quite fun to swim in (about 27 celcius)

Public spaces
Vast, long corridors and dramatic cascading gardens and fountains. nice alcoves to sit and read in but somehow they did not feel very inviting. One can see a flock of deer and peacocks roaming the grounds.

Service
Said to be a hotel with world-leading service - I beg to differ.

1. We complained about the abscence of a view on the lake in our "lakeview" room and were promised a reply soon. I waited at least 45 minutes in my rooms until I had to phone them about it.

2. At dinner we were offered dessert twice despite having ordered dessert 10 minutes earlier. Then we had to ask for our bill twice before being presented with it.

3. I asked specifically for the dead bugs on our windowsill to be cleaned out in the morning and by late afternoon the bugs were still there.

4. We ordered a picnic hamper at 10am to be collected at 1pm. At 1pm we were handed a hamper which, when opened, contained the rotting detritus of someone else's lunch.

5. The internet went dead in the afternoon. I called at 2pm for help and the engineer arrived 2 hours later - "Is there something wrong with your DVD player, sir?" By that time the internet had started working again on its own.

6. Our remote control for the DVD was out of batteries when we moved in - such a basic mistake!

7. When my wife ventured to the spa to ask for yoga lessons the next day, she received a curt answer - "It is clearly stated that there is no yoga on Mondays, madam". Although the lady did end up going out of her way to arrange a yoga lesson for my wife for Monday.

Overall
Sadly a disappointing stay. We had high expectations given the recommendations of others and the extremely high ratings given by such magazines as T+L, but the experience just did not live up to it, and we decided to save our money and not spend it on the Rajvillas in Jaipur. The Lake Palace, in contrast, made us feel like royalty.
