Certificate of Excellence

I had my reservations about the Oberois group as I had one unpleasant experience but Udaivilas more than made up for it
The hospitality was unmatchable. It is spread across 30 acres and overlooking the lake- it is definitely the best properties in Udaipur.
The staff were senstive to our needs and went out of their way to make our stay pleasurable. The Banyan Tree spa was also top class. I am fussy when it comes to hospitality. A lot of five stars tend to work without their heart the but the same cant be said about Udaivilas.
Be it the watchman staying up late at night with a torchlight to show us the way ( we were the only guests who had taken the boat at that time), thet hotel's private boatman who wold return with shawls to ensure that we were not cold ;or the front office staff who ensured that a calamine lotion was kept by the bed for my son who had developed a rash.
Lovely touches - all of the above.

If one can afford the luxury; then Udaivilas makes you come back feeling like royalty

We enjoyed our stay at Udaivilas more than any other hotel we've stayed at, so far. The hotel rates top on all the basics: location, room, and service. But let's take things one at a time.

First impressions – As they matter a whole lot, our first impressions surely predisposed us for a most memorable stay. We were greeted outside the airport by a friendly hostess and a hotel driver, both dressed in traditional uniforms that were most pleasant to the eye. Their smiles and courtesy, effectiveness and assistance, made the 40-minute drive to the property a pleasure rather than an ordeal, as it well might have been, considering the often chaotic traffic that characterises Indian roads. This treatment was furthered by another set of beautifully dressed staff members waiting to greet us outside the hotel, take our luggage and guide us to the reception area.

Location & grounds - The hotel's architecture and landscaping are simply perfect, with exquisite attention to detail and breathtaking views to lake Pichola, the city of Udaipur, and the distant mountains. The gardens are immaculate and exhibit a wide variety of flora, plus a small nature reserve as big as the hotel itlself, with local flora. The buildings are designed to resemble a Rajasthani palace, with an array of beautiful domes, courtyards, water features, and vantage points. When walking through the hotel, the designers have ensured that there is a splendid view every few steps, making the experience of getting to one’s destination all the more fascinating.

Room & amenities - We were delighted with our "Premium" room, which had a superb bed, spacious bathroom with windows to the private porch, a comfortable desk and sitting area, as well as a private outdoor courtyard giving onto the common heated pool. All in-room amenities, fittings, fixtures, and decor were aesthetically pleasing and functional, with small details enhancing the client experience: a multi-adaptor for international sockets, a fully stocked mini-bar commode, a window-side daybed with a multitude of pillows, and all sorts of little perks like clothing brushes, shoe brushes, separate laundry bags for different garment types, etc. etc.

Public spaces & service – All of the guest areas are finished in local materials, mostly marbles, granites, and sandstones, in intricate patterns and unique designs, while walls are adorned in well-chosen artwork and ceilings are meticulously finished with exquisite paintwork, glass mosaics, and – as rarely as needed – gold leaf. Needless to say perhaps, everything is kept spotless by a brigade of friendly staff members dressed in either flamboyant and attractive local garments or more run-of-the-mill, but nevertheless, clean and tidy workmen’s overalls. We had the pleasure of meeting the hotel manager, who greeted us upon our arrival and before our departure, and it was clear that his work was made all the more easy by the cohesion and effectiveness of his team, which was evident both by their general composure as well as their genuine wish to please and their seemingly endless propensity for smiling.

Food & beverage – We had the pleasure of taking four meals at the hotel, plus one breakfast at the buffet and another in the room, so we enjoyed quite a few of the dishes. As the guides rightly point out, the Indian dishes are better prepared than the international ones, so we stuck as much as possible to local cuisine, which was indeed very tasty. Once again, the service was immaculate. Our only reservation was that the menu might prove to be too repetitive after more than a couple of days’ stay, which we pointed out to our particularly professional waiter, Mr.Yvu, who assured us that our comment would be taken up seriously and relayed to the management for further action.

Spa & fitness – The spa is ideally located so as to enjoy the best views in the house, which is always much appreciated in contract to the usual practice of putting a spa in some dark basement. The outdoor heated pool is an enormous pleasure in the day or night, and free for all guests to use. The thermal cabins are basic, with a small steam and sauna in each of the changing rooms, while the treatment rooms are spacious and functional, albeit somewhat exposed to the sounds of the central stairwell (which is a sight to behold in itself). The two of us had treatments together in one of the suites, and they were good, but as far as spas go – and I say this in all honesty – the Six Senses Spa at Porto Elounda is still the best I have experienced.

Final point – For the rates charged for a room in the information age, internet access should not be charged.

This family trip was totally unforgotable. 2N3D packege was well crafted. As you know Udaipur is a beautiful city and also called Lake City and staying in hotel which is in lake gives you a unique experience. It's sorrounding by mountains. Must stay hotel if you are in udaipur. The service is wonderful and the hotel is amaizing. The decoration of the rooms and the common places are stylish with a lot of indian influences. We felt like in a maharaja in own palace.

no point repeating everything previous reviewers have said - this is without a doubt one of the finest and best run hotels anywhere in the world

service was faultless - graet breakfast and the one meal that we ate in the hotle for, was superb

views are gorgeous - make sure you take the 45 minute sunset cruise around the lake

never have we felt quite so pampered

only criticism is that all the rooms are bordered by long open corridors. For some reason the rooms were built with large internal glass windows onto those corridors which have to be permanently curtained to maintain privace. As a result if anyone walks past the room or talks in the corridor, the sound travels and this is a bit annoying as we were twice woken in this way

It is one of the type pf hotel which at the entrance itself takes your breath away. It is so equisitvely and tasetfully done that it is easily one of the attractions of Udaipur. The architecture is simply outstanding.

The spa experience is decent. Surprisngly for the type of hotel it is not very expensive. The staff is also very courteous.

It is perhaps a best place for romantic getaways or honeymoon. Not really recommended for stay with kids.

The Oberoi Udaivilas is virtually without peer anywhere in the world and it deserves a prominent slot on your travel shortlist.

I arrived at the Udaipur airport before 8:00 am, was met by two staffers, whisked to the hotel in a Benz SUV, complete with cool hand towels, bottled water, and a selection of music or conversation with the staff. Upon arrival to the hotel, I was personally greeted by Torsten, the affable and talented managing director, and quickly escorted to an upgraded room, even though I was hours ahead of standard check-in time.

Everything regarding my stay mirrored the excellence of the initial arrival. The facilities are utterly spotless, staff members well-trained and consummately gracious, the grounds manicured and relaxing, the Banyan Tree Spa facilities and services top-class, and the menus diverse and brilliantly prepared. The hotel also provides boat service, and no request is too big or too small.

In planning the trip, I really vacillated between the Taj Lake Palace and the Oberoi, but after eating at the Taj Lake Palace and seeing the Leela Kempinski, I consider these properties to be very fine, but still a notch below the Oberoi, which also has a no-tipping policy, which is replaced with an opportunity to leave one gratuity amount at the end of the stay to be shared among the entire staff.

Having traveled many countries and continents, I found the Rajasthanis to be among the kindest and most genuine people in the world, and both Jaipur and Udaipur have modern and efficient airports served by excellent carriers like Jet Airways and Kingfisher, so travel is not difficult and is of a high international standard.

If you enjoy the Peninsula, Four Seasons, and other fine hotels, you will want to go to the Oberoi, and by all means, avail yourself of the amazing massages and treatment rooms in the hotel's Banyan Tree Spa. The 2009 Conde Nast Top 100 Awards ranked the Udaivilas as the top non-resort hotel in the world, and I'm quick to concur!
