“Jagat Niwas "rules": just OK”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 February 2014

We took a Pichola Suite at this hotel and were on the ground floor looking directly on to the lake. It was lovely to have a day bed in the window on which one could contemplate the view, and the ante-room for our luggage was great. The bathroom was very large and well equipped and, if one remembered to turn on the geyser in time, the shower was hot.
The hotel has just been renovated and it shows. However, one could see the paint already starting to peel - upkeep in these places must be demanding.
But ...
We also got a lot of noise given the hard surfaces and proximity of reception - we were woken early on both mornings we were there by people coming and going first thing in the morning. We paid 7000 per night (including the taxes) and our accommodation did NOT come with breakfast, which seemed mean given the cost. On our first day we were directed to a table at the back of the restaurant away from the view and several other groups of guests (men, interestingly) who arrived after us were served before us. On the 2nd morning we went to the Edelweiss Cafe instead and got a better and cheaper breakfast.
The restaurant for dinner - with its famous rooftop setting - was good, but not great, and quite expensive with drinks. It wasn't a patch on the service, atmosphere and quality of Ambrai over the water at Ahmet Haveil: I absolutely recommend dinner there.
Jagat Niwas also had rules about which stairs to take when one left dinner - we went to take the closest stairs and were told we had to go down different stairs. There were not a lot of people around and no apparent reason for this.
Overall the staff were friendly and obliging, but there seemed to be a lot of rules at this hotel - no guests in the rooms, etc etc - the list is in the room when you arrive. However, strangely, there was no tourist or hotel information provided in the rooms - we had to go to reception to get the wireless password, for example. Just doesn't set the right tone for a visit that is meant to be about pleasure and relaxation.
Overall, therefore, while our room itself was a one-off and very special, the rest of what this hotel had to offer was just OK, and I didn't find this a truly comfortable or welcoming place.

The best thing about Jagat Niwas was the staff- polite and courteous. We arrived at 6:30 am, and our check in time was 10 am, but they showed us the way to their lovely restaurant, with the best views of Lake Pichola and the Taj hotel, where we were asked to wait until the rooms were ready. They gave us both rooms an hour early, despite being fully booked. An army of staffers rushed to clean our rooms so we could freshen up and get out again.
The rooms were really cheap online so I was a bit wary about booking it, but my concern was all for nothing since the rooms are nice, clean and cosy. We stayed in room 122 which was definitely small, with a low ceiling but then again it was only 1900 for the night.
The location of this place is unbeatable. We were able to see the sun rise and set beautifully form the hotel restaurant. Also, on our floor there was a sit out overlooking Lake Pichola, where one could sit and read while enjoying a glass of wine.
Look no further when looking for a hotel in Udaipur. 5 star hotels could learn a thing or two in guest relations from these guys.

Room Tip: Take the slightly more expensive rooms, as the standard ones have very low ceilings

Just returned from my first trip to India, this hotel was one of many we stayed in and we where made to feel very welcome and special. The reception team helped us out whenever they could. The restaurant is fantastic inexpensive and a beautiful location. I would definitely recommend this hotel and room 120 which is on the ground floor with windows over the waters edge. Beautiful fabrics fill the room and the bed is very comfortable like home from home. I have already decided to go back in 2016 for my 50th birthday I enjoyed it so much. Udaipur is fantastic and this hotel is right in the centre on the lake close to everything of interest.

We really enjoyed staying at this beautiful Haveli. We had tried it get a room on the lake side but there weren't any available so we stayed in a room that faced the courtyard. It was still great and we enjoyed the view from the restaurant. The location is perfect. We would definitely stay here again.

Very bad service, very bad location, way over priced, arrogant staff. They are thriving on foreigners who lack local information. All foreign tourist note, you can get better and cheaper hotels in Udaipur.

This is a real gem. Overlooking the lake, it is a very quaint hotel right in the old city. First floor room overlooking lake was very cool.

Internet is hard to use unless you're in the lobby. There is a fabric store right at entrance that has a real aggressive storekeeper that will harass you on way in.

Rooftop restaurant is great setting and decent food.

We stayed here having wandered out from our original hotel, and decided that this was better.

It's a lovely haveli building with terraces and little stairways everywhere. It has a delightful rooftop restaurant, with great views over the lake.

The food and service is good, without being exceptional. The rooms are clean, well decorated and clean.

We would definitely stay again.
