We stayed in Jagat Niwas for 5 days as we attented a wedding in Udaipur. We booked a standard room (221) which was good enough and not expensive.Even a small walk in closet, bathroom was ok, good bed, good wifi in the room. The hotel itself is very pretty and a must see even if you are not staying here. Old haveli, well maintained, nice rooftop. The only pity thing is the restaurant and the staff in the restaurant. The staff is not motivated at all. We had breakfast only one time here, the rest of our stay we went outside for tea and sandwiches. A pity, it could have been the best hotel in town, only the service and the prices in the restaurant - e.g. a cup of greentea for 2 euro's in India... come on! ;)

Beautiful, beautiful hotel right on the lake. At night the interior is lit wonderfully. There is an excellent restaurant. The rooms without a view eg 128 are large with good bathrooms and very much cheaper than the lake side rooms. Enjoy sitting in an upstairs window seat looking out over the lake enjoying a last drink before bed. Oh and the beds are comfortable.

Room Tip: 128 has no view at all but is good value and very comfortable. Very quiet hotel.

The J N Palace was our best: heritage room, view, location, experience of our 3 week India trip. We paid $100 Cdn/ngt (all txs in).... so it was our most $$ room of the trip but worth every penny to pamper ourselves a bit.
Udaipur is beautiful ! ...the "Lake City" (a very welcome change from BIG India city chaos!) and if you make the $ effort to visit (one of our top trip highlites!) you must place yourself on its shores to get the most out of it.
Our room #111... a "Raj" lake facing was probably one of the best located rooms in the place with spectacular views, romance, comfort ...ask for it
I understand the other reviews of rooms that were less inspiring... interior located etc....our room really made our experience...(as well as sunny calm weather, sunsets, great meals etc etc)
The J N Palace, a historic Havelis ,one of many on the shores of the Lake Pichola was beautifully appointed, maintained, serviced and the location was superb... book yourself into any one of the top ones recommended on this site ,get a lake facing room and enjoy the Udaipur experience.
Breakfast in the lake facing dining area was excellent! (order a toast&pastry plate as part of your Breakfast... yum! and good value, Dinner on the rooftop was less inspiring ... maybe our choices were off...(but the nightime views and ambiance were gorgeous!) and yes it's pricey...But.. there are many other great restaurants nearby. Our best meal by far... a nighttime Dinner on the rooftop of the Lake Pichola Hotel across from the J N Palace. Spectacular! Highly Recommended!

Bob

Room Tip: We were lucky and got Room 111, (a DOUBLE RAJ (Lake Facing) A/C ROOM), $100cdn, I'm sure it was one of the best located and very comfortable and worth splurging for...highly recommended!

During our trip we stayed at cheap hotels, but then we got the second-most expensive room at Jagat Niwas to get some luxery. But really the room was small.. but nice and clean room, helpful staff and an amazing view over the lake. So if you want to spend money on hotels, i recommend it, but don't expect anything extraordinary.

This review is largely based on our room location; we had a room in a sort of annex, outside the main hotel; it was not charming; towels were like YMCA rejects; the room was otherwise spacious and servicable. The hotel restaurant indeed has a nice view of Lake P, and both breakfast and diner were good.
