We loved this hotel. While not super modern in terms of amenities (e.g., only 5 minutes of hot water per shower), the views and the location make it totally worthwhile and a great value 4 star hotel. We ate dinners on the rooftop of the hotel and watched sunset sipping masala tea. The hotel itself is a beautiful property and you get a nightly visit by a troop of monkeys passing through

We stayed for four nights at this superbly renovated former royal palace. The rooms were clean and spacious with excellent bathrooms and many ammenities supplied. Every member of the hotel staff offered friendly service and advice about how to get the most of their lovely city of Udaipur. The location of this hotel is the best we can imagine in the city - so close that we walked to everything we wanted to see. Delightful courtyard gardens and an excellent rooftop restaurant with an outstanding view of the lake complete this excellent property. We recommend it very highly.

The pros:

super charming rooms with bay windows that look directly out on the lake.

lovely roof-top restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. good food, gorgeous views.
great location.

hotel arranged for pick up from airport--although that turned into a hilarious comedy of errors with a chain of 3 different drivers and a traffic jam of mopeds, dogs, cows, etc.

"palace" style architecture

super-reasonably priced in the eyes of this New Yorker. Good value for what we got.

They showed us other room options when we asked.

Great location.

the cons:

in an email they said reservations were not needed for a new years eve dinner. when we arrived, they said reservations were need. doh! they took actions to squeeze us in though.

It takes a while to get the check at the restaurant and they were less than attentive to our needs.

I loved this place. It is a heritage hotel with the funkiest, most interesting rooms ever. The location is perfect, the restaurant has great views and the best food we had in India. We had a great time in Udaipur and Jagat Niwas hotel was a part of the unique experience.

I stayed at Jagat Niwas for four nights in November 2010 and was very happy I did. The hotel itself is comprised of two adjoining palaces, with several floors and an amazing rooftop restaurant and bar. I had a lake-facing room with a beautiful view of the lake palace for quite a bargain. The rooftop restaurant serves very good food and for a sunset beer, you cannot beat the view. The indoor restaurant where they serve breakfast also has beautiful views of the lake, with several cushioned nooks that look out toward the lake palace.

The staff is very friendly and helpful -- the only downside, if you consider it one, is that the hotel does not have wifi. However, I was able to pick up wireless signals from neighboring hotels most of the time. Also, a friend was in a non lake facing room and found it pretty noisy, as his window looked out over a narrow alley where kids and the staff would hang out early in the morning.

From the hotel, almost all of Udaipur's places of interest and good restaurants are an easy walk.

I would definitely recommend Jagat Niwas Palace to anyone visiting Udaipur who wants a taste of the lake palace life at a fraction of the cost to stay in the middle of the lake!

Stayed with my wife and my sister. We booked in advance and had two rooms next to each other. Go for the rooms facing the lake - they are worth every rupee. We had really nice rooms with small "balconies" where you could relax and watch the lake and the lake palace.. The hotel is directly on the lake and everything is in walking distance - you don't need to have a car. Staff was also really friendly. Would always stay here when in Udaipur. We loved it and were sad when we had to check out for the next station of our tour.
The restaurant (both on the roof top and one floor below) is worth a visit. You have great views and the food is also good.
