Great hotel to stay if you want to feel like real "Rajasthans heritage type accommodation" Hotel belongs to Royal family which also owns - Jagmandir island hotel & lake palace, udaipur.
Hotel is beautifully crafted with modern amenities - they also have a superb pool to chill you down in summers; food is just brilliant you can google some royal rajasthani dishes and amazingly they are available on their menu...

i recommend this hotel if want to stay in heritage kind of place and also if your budget allows it.

Room Tip: Rooms are available on two sides of palace (1) Valley facing (2) Lake facing... if you are travellin...

On a recent family trip to Udaipur, we booked 2 nights at Shiv Niwas and 2 nights at Oberoi Udaivillas. We specifically booked Shiv Niwas as we wanted to stay in the Palace complex for 1/2 our stay.....and booked about 5 months in advance. 48 hours before our arrival we rec'd an e-mail that "due to an overbooking situation" we were to be moved to Jag-Mandir Island hotel (another hotel in Shiv Niwas group) but would be given suites as compensation. All-in-all, it was a very disappointing situation. We did spend some time at the Shiv Niwas pool, and the place was a ghost town. There was no evidence of a single other guest in the property....so the "overbooking situation" was very suspicious. As for the Jag-Mandir, I have posted a review there as well (summary: DO NOT STAY there)

We absolutely loved Udaipur and this hotel too! Staying in an old palace, made our trip around India truly special. There is a great old charm at this hotel, the furnishings are as you would expect a palace to be, so don't expect a modern hotel with modern furnishings. The room was large and the bathroom too. We had an amazing view of the lake and the lake palace hotel. The food here was the best that we had in any hotel in India. Table service was a nice change to a buffet and the continental and indian food were both high class! On the morning of our departure, we had a full breakfast served to us in our room at 4am- great service!

Udaipur is a magical place and this hotel is a great place to explore the palace since you're right in it! The spa area was also good, and I enjoyed a lovely facial.

We stayed in the guest suites in this former palace for royal guest accomodation. Our rooms had marble lobbies, huge bedrooms with sofas, an office, a dressing room, a vast bathroom, all except the lobby overlooking the lake. Dinner was served around the swimming pool and underneath the stars. So this is what official visits are like for celebrities and leading politicians. However, dinner service was slow and I said so in a comment card which only the men in our party were asked to complete. At breakfast the next morning the manager apologised and appeared to be genuinely concerned rather than going through the motions. Actually the women in our party would have been more critical of the standard of food served to them, if asked. For all of these criticisms, we still loved the experience which was far superior in style to our stay in the Lake Palace hotel several days later.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the old royal guest suites overlookiung the lake, preferably numbered from 05 upwards

Extremely nice hotel. Extremely Romantic, rooms so well decorated and tasteful.
We had a balcony and a courtyard overlooking lake - so dreamy.
Didn't want to leave hotel.

Must rate with some of the most romantic hotels of the world.
(although Leela Palace is possibly still better, and Taj Lake Palace is up there too
and they are all in the same place)

Dinner was a bit basic considering, but we got over that.
Bathroom spa bath was not working - didn't look like it could be fixed either,
bathroom tiles cracked etc - showing its age, but we overlooked that too
for the rest of the rooms - and the view just meant you wanted to keep
looking at it.

Have heard the rooms without views are not value though - be careful.
Sounds like you have to spend a bit to get the "amazingness" or you'll get the wrong
impression.

Room Tip: Clearly don't buy the rooms with no view. They are completely different quality. The terrace ro...

I booked a standard room at $170 and left feeling ripped off. The grounds were lovely, beautiful pool, and it was cool staying in a palace. BUT the standard room was poorly furnished from what looked like flea market furniture. The room, as many say, is below par and definitely a two-star place. The bath had a bare fluorescent ceiling bulb and a blow dryer from 1970s with a hose! The door was locked with a chain and combination lock, which didn't fully close. Worst is the owners, who rake in the money knowing that the room is straight out of the 1970s and cheap. If the room were $70, I wouldn't complain. But to pay a lot of money in India for a two star room made me feel cheated. I will not return.

Room Tip: supposedly suites are better but who knows? I suspect some of the good reviews are fake or by frien...

Heritage Palace / Maintiang authentic Palace set of ambience , like fixtues , furniture etc …. The good reviews are from guests who have had very good experince they are not fake

Dear agnes184,

Greetings from the Shiv Niwas Palace.

We are thankful to for taking out the time and writing about us. We have made a note regarding your observation and ensure the same will be attended in future. The look of the rooms was this way as the hotel is a heritage palace and we have maintained the authenticity of the palace. As per the reviews, we ensure they are genuine and as a policy we do not have internal reviews.

We do regret your inconvenient stay with us but despite of this we look forward to have you soon with us and serve you in a way you would love. Hope to see you back with us.

Warm Regards,

My husband and I stayed at Shiv Niwas Palace hotel in the standard room - that was disappointing. The rooms were small and more like a 2 or 3 star. Apparently the suites were much nicer. The standard rooms could do with some upgrading. The fact of being on the palace grounds was really an experience. The pool bar was bright and comfortable - a great place for a couple of drinks and a snack. The Paantya restaurant was very good - service and food. Both nights we had window seats. Breakfast was quite complete with both hot and cold foods offered. Eggs were cooked as ordered. All in all I would recommend the hotel if you are staying in a suite; avoid the standard rooms - they are "standard".
