After weeks of travelling my wife and I arrived in Udaipur. We decided to treat ourselves and chose this hotel. We got one of the rooms that overlooked the lake and had a private outdoor terrace and balcony. What a dream. Great views. Great location, staff and service. Like experiencing another era.

The location is great. Convenient for everything. It is after all a palace so you feel the space all around. Nice room, decent decor and super spacious. Nice large verandah to sit on in the evening and enjoy a glass of wine. The city is beautiful, no wonder theory call it the white city. We stayed for 3 days but could have stayed for more. The statue of the maharaja is a marvel. Recommend the food and the service anyway.

The grounds were lovely and the rooms were big though a little tired. Beds weren't very comfortable and we had a bad experience with the linens. We thought this place, being a palace and higher-end hotel, would have the integrity to mail our postcards but they never arrived.

I had a lovely room with private balconey and a huge outdoor patio, large enough to have a cocktail party! The view was east over the village at the foot of the hill and the mountains so the sunrise was lovely. The white marble bathroom had a large window so you had a lovely view of the sky and mountains while in the bath. The rooms were accessed from the second floor and you had a wonderful view of the inner courtyard and pool coming and going. Breakfast was a huge buffet with excellent staff and omlettes were also available.

The location was divine. I barely left the palace complex since everything was there. Shops, restaurants, museums, and boat rides on Lake Piccolo. The car ride from the airport was amazing, women wearing pink saris riding on motorcycles, fighting for road space with large trucks carrying pink jagged stones, as the zinc plant spews white smoke into a cloudless blue sky. The air quaility is very good in Udaipur. There was a fresh breeze from the lake in the mornings and evenings which required shawls.

Although the public has access to the Old Palace, access to Shiv Niwas is limited to hotel guests so it was like staying in the guesthouse of the Maharana - whose family resides in the royal residence section of the Shiv Niwas.

One caveat - the shopkeepers ask you where you are from, then give you a price appropriate to your geographic status. Run away if this happens as the prices will be extremely high. I paid $8 for batteries that had expired and lasted 20 min in my camera. Next I was charged over $24 dollars for 4 "fresh" batteries. Granted the second set lasted my entire trip but it is pretty outrageous. I left Udaipur and went shopping at the Dilli Haat in Delhi and I had the best prices ever there. $5 for summer dresses! My driver also warned me against going to any shops recommended by drivers - they are given a commission to bring tourists to the shops. This happened to m and i was quoted prices that were FOUR times the prices i got for the same items at Dilli Haat.

We spend 2 nights at the Shiv Palace, were there on Valentine Day. Loved everything about it except maybe that the room was not newly renovated and could have look better for the price we paid. But, still convenient and lovely. We took a package with room, breakfast, dinner and a couple of other things we actually had no time to do. Totally worth it. Breakfast was lovely with a view on the lake. (You can choose the view on the pool, it's up to you) Diner was very good and service was excellent. They reduced the amount of spice in or meals so we can enjoy it better. If I have a chance, I will definitely go back!

Received a good welcome on arrival. Staff friendly. Werent expecing much from the room as we had read the Palace rooms were disappointing (but the cheapest option in the hotel!) - but i guess its good to have lower expectations! room was perfectly adequate- small closed balcony with gorgeous sunrise view. room was clean, spacious enough, nice linen etc- was very comfortable. Went to their restaurant for breakfast which was a bit expensive but really delicious and great view. Staff friendly. The sunset terrace restaurant couldnt get better for lake sunset views and drinks- again- staff friendly. a bit expensive but such a fantastic setting- really worth it! had dinner there too- delicious food.we then got upgraded to a suite- which was really fantastic! dont know how much they normally cost but great space- private terrace, views etc etc!! would certainly recomend the hotel- even if only the palace rooms- how much time do u want to spend in your room in a town like that anyway? its not a resort- and to stay on palace grounds for a reasonable price, even if the room isnt mindblowing- i think its worth it. it was more than comfortable and certainly worth it!

Room Tip: ask for balcony and view if choosing palace room.
