Warm welcome on arrival with an upgrade to a Royal Suite which was had a four poster bed, antique furniture and stunning views of Lake Pichchola. The central location was very handy for boat trips on the lake and visiting most the "must see "sights of Udaipur which were within easy walking distance.
The food provided was good with breakfast being superb, specially the quality and veriety of fruit and fruit juices provided. Dinner was under the stars by an ornamental pool to the accompaniment of local musicians.
It was a priviledge to spend a few days in such truly "royal" surroundings and is something I would love to repeat funds permitting!

We ended up going to Udaipur after our trip to Nepal was cancelled because of the civil war there. Found Udaipur in the book 1000 Places to See Before you Die. What a great find! Udaipur is the cleanest city we went to in India (we went to New Delhi, Agra and Jaipur as well). We stayed in a beautiful room with a porch. Service at the front desk was quick. The view of Lake Pichola from the dining area is awesome. Food at the restaurant was quite tasty. The bathroom is very clean. Bed was comfortable and the sheets are soft. Service was very prompt when we asked for extra towels. The hotel is adjacent to the Palace Museum (literally your backyard). The hotel is a short walk to several shops. You have to haggle in India. We met a very funny shop owner who made us try on Indian outfits. What a laugh! If we get to go back, will definitely stay there again.

The palace is beautiful and I had a terrace room with wonderful views! Room itself is of high standards with all amenities. Free wi-fi. The problem I had is with the food they serve. Restaurant dining by the pool is nice but servers don't understand their jobs well, especially at a hotel of this standard. Food was mediocre and drinks way overpriced. Breakfast was a dismal dining experience both mornings.

  • Liked — the room and the view
  • Disliked — restaurant is mediocre and food is not at all exciting

The place was clean, central to the city and had great views of the lake. However, the staff was unhelpful and borderline rude when we asked questions about restaurants not owned by the hotel and places to see in the city. I wanted to checkin for our flight online but despite their "guest internet" computers being unused they insisted that I had to pay an hour minimum charge (10 times the rate anywhere else in the city) just to use the computer for 10 minutes. All this despite paying possibly the highest room rates in the city (except for lake palace and Udai Villas) We ended up hanging around a local budget hotel (Khumhah Palace) where the owner was extremely helpful despite our not being guests there. Wouldn't stay here again and wouldn't recommend it to friends.

I have to share these pictures with you, if only to make you smile. I was SO BORED during our one hour wait for breakfast that I resorted to taking photos as each item or piece of cutlery appeared.

Surely, surely, surely in a five star hotel it would not be beyond the wit of man to get breakfast right? Coffee, rolls, fruit, juice. Two waiters spread between five tables in use and not all guests arriving at once-- not rocket science.

When they eventually arrived, our chicken sausages, parathas and waffles were plentiful and delicious. Sadly, we had to rush everything as we were extremely late for our pre-arranged tour.

Slow service seems to be a recurring theme of Trip Advisor reviews for this hotel.

I think it is worth mentioning that there are several different qualities of room, which is probably why the reviews are so mixed.

Palace Rooms—advertised at US$365 per night, high season, breakfast included.
The city view rooms are around a courtyard and have seen better days. Some are above the Spa. If you told me that these were former servants’ quarters, then I would believe you. I did not recognize photos of these rooms on the hotel website. Nice curtains and bed. Some of the furniture could be accurately be described as distressed (or, alternatively, feeling positively suicidal !)
Peculiar narrow corridor (described as a balcony) with rectangular stainless steel framed windows—most odd. Antiquated bathroom, not well finished.

Terrace Suites- advertised at US$682 per night, high season, breakfast included.

Imperial Suites-US$998, high season, breakfast included. Reviews of these suites get the high ratings on Trip Advisor.

Only some rooms are lake facing. Check when you book.

Pluspoints. The Palace is on the edge of Lake Pichola and is convenient for boat rides (book the sunset trip in advance).

Guests have a pass which allows access to routes across the palace complex.

A “Scottish”band plays every evening for about one hour.

You are welcomed with a beautiful garland of pale chrysanthemums and rose buds.

The hotel provides plentiful toiletries, personalized stationary, a fruit basket, biscuits, tea and coffee making facilities and a turn down service with chocolates. We also received two nicely packaged booklets.

Minus points.
The breakfast and restaurant service is extremely poor.

Evening meals are very expensive.

For a five star, luxury hotel (charging high prices) all rooms should be better finished, not just the suites.

Bathrooms are badly in need of an update.

The fiscally canny Maharana of Udaipur owns and runs this hotel (among many others, including the Fateh Prakesh Hotel within the same complex). He appears to be trading on his name rather than concentrating on his guests.

  • Liked — Its position by the lake.
  • Disliked — The terrible service.

We stayed here in March with our 15 month old baby for one night in the imperial suite (upgraded from the terrace suite) as a convenient place prior to flying out the next day back to Mumbai. Wish we had stayed longer. The setting is one of the most romantic we have been to. Incredible architecture, views, detail. Everything about this hotel/complex exudes history and a sense of priveledge. The room was huge with its own bar, lounge, dressing room etc. Eat at the terrace restaurant for even more romance. We loved this place and couldnt fault it. Sure the outside may need a lick of paint, but come on this building was built before most of us had opposable thumbs.
