“Lovely hotel”
Reviewed 22 November 2013 via mobile

We found Madrid haveli through a travel portal called chekin.in and it turned out to be a lovely place to stay. Located bang in the centre of the city, it is convenient to walk to just about most tourist spots. They have done up an old palace really well. The design is nice and different. Cute rooms. And really friendly staff. The food was great too. and the rates are quite reasonable. A must stay if you aren't looking for something über luxurious.

We had a fantastic 2 nights stay at this Haveli. We were there during the lead up to Dewali celebration and the views from the rooftop restaurant was just magnificent! The manager, Shanker, was very polite, welcoming and accommodating. Same thing could be said to the restaurant captain, Vijay Singh and his staff especially Kishand. Kishand found my bag that I left at the rooftop restaurant after some late night drinks and he delivered it to our room (everything intact) the very next morning - now that's service for you! We highly commended his honesty and we're very pleased with his attitude. Love this place and will definitely stay there again. Thank you so much guys for the wonderful time...keep up the good work!!

we booked in Madri after looking at the reviews here. Unfortunately, we saw the review posted by Dr T G W only after we'd done the booking. On a lot of issues i agree with this persons review and am quite amazed at the number of very high positive reviews received by the hotel.
The good things first:
1. Manager is helpful
2. Food is good.
3. Rooms are very clean.
4. Mattresses/ quilts provided are very good.
The REALLY bothersome stuff:
1. Deluxe rooms are small (the one we had was tiny) and not having enough daylight due to tiny windows opening out to neighboring houses. The room we got on the first night (we stayed for 3 nights) was very small and dark with very low wattage lights. No reading of books was possible. On the next two nights the manager (who's very helpful) gave us a room on the very top which is generally used as a store room. This room had enough daylight - however, was on the 4th floor adjacent to the restaurant. So the climb up after having a full day of sightseeing around Udaipur was a chore.
2. The haveli is located in the old city - further inwards. No direct lake views. All rooms either face the neighbors house (we had a neighbor outside our window doing exercises early in the morning) or a few face the very narrow road to the frontage of hotel).

Overall, though Madri haveli was good, in the context of Udaipur, i would have taken a different place had i known the above. We had gone to Udaipur for relaxation - couldn't get it in this hotel. We stayed out of the hotel most of the day 'sightseeing'. The climb up to the hotel entrance is in itself much(from the lake area), after which another few floors to the room, no possibility to read a book in the evening.
I am an architect and appreciated the work that went into renovating the haveli, however, i don't think this is a 'boutique hotel' and feel that we did a mistake in choosing this place over other, better placed (in context of the lake) hotels. This place would be good for people who want to move around a lot an only come to sleep in the room. I'd say the below 30's age group would do very well here (I'm in my early 40's badly in need of de-stressing/relaxing from work)

Stayed at this hotel with my family. In total, a very good stay and would recommend others.

Positives:
- courteous and very helpful staff including management
- rooms were spacious
- magnificent view from roof top
- good restaurant service
- centrally located in hustle and bustle of the town within walking distance of main tourist sites

Suggestions for improvement:
- complimentary water bottles (atleast 1 per person per day) in each room will be appreciated
- tea/coffee making facilities in each room will be great addition
- the sewage shafts (in one of our room) stunk heavily sometime - something need to be sorted.

Wonderful 5 night stay at madri. All staff were delightful and eager to please. Rooms were sparse but comfortable, and the rooftop restaurant had an amazing view over the city and lake (including lake palace). Food was great value and tasty. And in house massage service is worth a try. It's not 5 star, but it's great value, fabulous location, and an all round excellent experience. Hope to go back again!

4 days in Udaipur was our first stop and stepping into our room at the Madri, bejewled refractions from the stained-glass window dancing across a clean spacious bed, my wife and I high-fived --we had chosen wisely and knew we were starting on the right foot. Madri is a perfect example of balanced renovation: quality modern accouterments blended into the original 300 year old stone and wood structure, so you feel the history without feeling the age -- nothing is crumbling or in disrepair. Yes, unlike the Sheraton there are no elevators, as the only "1 star" reviewer pointed out, but why would there be? -- the Madri is made for a different set of discerning and appreciative crowd. There is the Taj hotel isolated in the heart of the lake, or the Mardi Haveli blended into the heart of the old city, depends your reason for coming to Udaipur.

This boutique screams labor of love, this was someone's personal and passionate project. Our room was large, as was the bathroom (which had a great rain shower head and hot water with 5- 10 min notice to front desk). The decor is chic and minimalistic so it doesn't over power the architecture. But, my wife notes, a closet or chest of drawers would be a good addition. For me, the only issue was the wifi signal which struggled to penetrate the stone walls.

The staff is kind and helpful. Keep an eye out for the "artist in residence" Rajesh whose work adorns some of the walls and is featured in several of the coffee table books. Photographer, sketcher, jeweler, Rajesh is a great guy to know for some true cultural insight into the city he loves so much.

Breakfast on the rooftop was great --many choices Indian or Western. Try the upma. Nice view of the lake, Aravali hills and old city. We did not have dinner there but we heard very good things.

Finally, the location: perfect. Live on the old city side and dine on the opposite side facing the city palace when views are best as the evening sun hits the walls. From Madri, everything of major tourist interest is 5-10 min away. Even better, the backstreets are a simple left turn and then an alley or two away, taking you far far away from tourists, motor cycles and noise. It is amazing how quiet it becomes when you enter the labyrinth.
