We stayed at the Jagat Niwas Palace across the lake and decided (upon recommendation by our Rough Guides India guide book) to have dinner at Amet Haveli. Being British Indian and having traveled India for the past 25 years, we're accustomed to Indian food- home made, from 5 star hotels and from street stalls. 'This is one of the few lakeside restaurants where the food lives up to its location' the book said- it was the worst food we've ever eaten.
We arrived at 8 for dinner. Ordered fresh orange juice and fresh pineapple juice- both 75% froth with juice enough for only 1 gulp. Not had 'juice' like this anywhere else! We ordered 'lusuni sag', spinach with garlic, and 'veg pakeeza-', a mixed veg dish. Both disgusting. The spinach dish literally had more oil than spinach- totally inedible. And the mixed veg dish was worse- a vile combination of vegetables, nuts and raisins and garnished with (no joke) pineapple rings and candied cherries- the description on the menu just said a special mixed veg curry. They got the naans wrong (ordered garlic and chilli naans with no butter, they delivered garlic naans smothered in butter) and took them forever to get it changed. When we told the waiters they simply ignored us- this happened about 3 times with 3 different waiters. The bill came out to a well extortionate 1700 rupees! We couldn't eat a thing and left, having to eat dinner back at our hotel, which we should have eaten in from the offset.
To add insult to injury, when leaving we told the manager that this was the worst food we'd eaten in the country and showed him pictures of our plate covered in oil, he just stared blankly back at us with no response. Useless management clearly. DO NOT GO HERE- vile food, useless staff and blank expressions is what you'll face.
