“Nice property, extremely poor service and food.”
Reviewed 21 December 2012

We stayed at Royal Retreat for 2 nights. It is a beautiful property, it has spacious rooms, nice swimming pool etc. However they are severely lacking in their service and food. When we checked in to our room we found that the bed spread was dirty and torn from at least 5-6 places, the bathroom was still dirty and there was someone's hair in the sink.

The room service is especially bad. To get anything from them you have to wait for at least one hour and call 4-5 times before it gets to you. Their standard answer for everything is that they are sorry but I am sure they don't care. Their breakfast buffet was quite bad as well. The service during our breakfast was the worst I have ever seen. Our server refused to give us hand towels. He did want to get us water and when he did he didn't serve it even after we asked him to do so.

I will never recommend this property to anyone. They are extremely poor in service and their prices definitely don't match up to their standards. Extremely disappointed.

It was so nice to come again to this hotel set in beautiful country side. I was welcomed and made to feel at home immediately, in great style.. This time my room was on the raised ground floor and had a small balcony that over looked the main swimming pool. It was so nice to see nature, the birds and flowers. There had been some renovations and they were still going on ..so I was grateful that I had been given a room in a quite area. The room was very comfortable full of beautiful antiques and paintings. It was like staying as a guest with a royal family. Breakfast was on the balcony, better than room service. In the early morning it was still not too hot. There was a very nice musician who played morning and sometimes in the evenings. Food was good, fresh both vegetarian and non vegetarian. I enjoyed seeing the horses, and walking around the garden and spacious grounds. 20 minute ride into Udaipur centre and in summer it was nice to be out side the city.

Room Tip: take a room away from the restaurant and lobby area, they are very quite..I prefer a upper floor. an...

Our room was large and opulent, filled with antiques and probably, memories of royalty ..The two pools were wonderful.....clean and refreshing. Poolside bar surrounded by elephants (carved, of course ) , an enjoyable place to meet fellow travelers. Food was good, service exceptional. I loved watching the horses in the royal stable being exercised. The wildlife visited the grounds as we enjoyed the pools. The archectiture of the resort in the evenings with the pathways alight are magical. The art showrooms are exquisite, with local art and artists highlighted, and art is scattered beautifully throughout the grounds. This is a truly exceptional place to stay.

Away from hustle and bustle of Udaipur city. Though approach to the resort is not very pleasant as it is through a narrow road passing from a village. But resort it self is very good. Having very good view and surrounded by mountains. Rooms are very spacious and well maintained. Service is great as well. Resort is having 2 pools and both were clean and in good condition. Food was great.

Just 5 Kms. from City's main tourist attraction ' Fateh Sagar Lake ' , the drive through lush green country side to this Hotel reveals its glory and grandeur step by step. You are welcomed by a Crisp salute at the Grand Fort gate. Suddenly a whole different world open up with Traditional colors and antique artifacts showered generously all over the place. Surrounded by green mountains, this place is a haven for a wonderful eye opening experience. The rooms are very tastefully ' hand sculpted' which give a rich and rare experience to travelers. The lush green lawns, two swimming pools, dining rooms and lobbies clad with antique artifacts, paintings, photographs give a very rare and memorable experience. The food served is out of the world and the services are exceptionally professional. The chef interacted with us and asked for our comments on the food and services. A good number of Golf carts make it very comfortable for elderly people. The lush green environment, serenely quiet multilevel locations, gardens etc. make it a memorable and 'must visit again' destination. The staff is very courteous and polite in line with true Rajasthani tradition. The horse stable, Vintage car on display, the Antiques and Art showroom, well equipped Spa and a quiet Bar with very comfortable seating and the flute player pouring honey dipped melodies in your ears are rare experiences which you do not find elsewhere. A grand conference Hall makes it an ideal destination for Board Meetings, Business conferences and Alumni meets.
Overall, the stay here was a very enjoyable and memorable one for us and the kids in our group. The room rates and food bills do not pinch your pocket and are easily affordable. Truely, a value for money experience in every aspect.

Room Tip: Any room overlooking the Large Swimming Pool

The drive to the royal retreat through the village of Hawala was not such a pleasant journey but the royality unfolded as we entered the hotel premises through the huge fort gate welcomed by traditional decor and antique artifacts that adorned the hotel. Lovely shades of blue and green everywhere, visible from the balcony of the well decorated and spacious room was breathtaking.Unique variety of flowers, lovely birds and a few majestic horses at the stable added to the cheerfulness of the place. At night the whole place was illuminated beautifully that made it look spectacular in the backdrop of the Aravalli hills. The food was also good, that could be enjoyed either in the 'darbar' restaurant or the verandah under the open skies. The location is just appropriate to provide the right blend of peace and calmness required to relax yet not being far away from the major tourist attractions- forts, temples and shopping areas. The only drawback is that the staff needs some professional training to be more courteous and helpful.

Stayed here with my father for a Theater group reunion and it was a once in a life time experience for the whole group. A very tastefully decorated and designed resort with every artifact is hand-picked and every room/hall/dinning place has been royally designed to ensure a great experience. Surrounded amidst the Aravali range, one feels comfortable, relaxed and at peace. Excellent hospitality with extremely cordial, sensitive and helpful staff. Truly a must visit place.
