Devra Udaipur is an idyllic retreat in the quiet countryside. Major Durga Das and his wife Jyoti Jasol were excellent hosts, offering wonderful hospitality, very high standards of comfort and excellent home cooked food. We recommend Devra Udaipur very highly.

We arrived there in time for breakfast on the terrace, following an overnight train. Immediate sense that our next 4 nights staying here would be complete tranquility. A B&B where you feel completely at home and hosts who make sure you're comfortable and have all you need. Jyoti, the hostess, teaches cooking. We ate at Devra each night, some of the tastiest food we had throughout our trip. Devra is small, only 4 rooms but will expanding to 10 soon. It's a modern build but with care for its environment and blends into the country. The rooms are spacious, modern but furnished tastefully in a timeless style. The views across to Udaipur a few miles away change with light of the day. Spectacular. We had the best time there, you shouldn't hesitate to stay if you get the chance.

My wife and I framed our three-week trip through Rajasthan (in December 08) with several nights at the Devra at the start of our travels and two more nights at the end. This proved an inspired move, since in several ways our choice of the Devra anchored our entire trip. During our days in Udaipur we utilized the Devra's reasonably priced car service to make one-day drives to nearby forts, temples, and other sites. Likewise, we utilized its car and driver to make our way as far as Jodhpur, and later we availed ourselves of the same as a pick-up service back to Udaipur.
More to the point, our hosts at the Devra--Jhoti and the Major--exhibited wonderful hospitality and a caring interest in our travel plans as well as our comings and goings. Jhoti delivered fine and abundant meals (with caring sensitivity for levels of spice tolerance). Perhaps most important, she has an acute sense for recommending the best, most rewarding ways to spend one's time, suggesting sites and places to see (including a fun state fair) which typically do not find their way into the guidebooks.
At this time the Devra offers four nicely furnished large rooms, with several terraces facing the city palace sitting high up in the distance. Highly memorable were breakfasts taken on the terrace, accompanied by the early morning mist rising above the trees and gardens below, eventually encircling the mountains higher up. In fact, the overall sense of serenity and tranquility, especially after a hectic day of maneuvering through city streets by foot or through traffic by car, cannot be overrated. The Devra is a work (of art) in progress, as its host, the Major, is happy to discuss and eager to display, making it all the more a warm and welcoming place to stay.

My husband and I just returned from our first ever visit to India - three weeks in Rajasthan, traveling with two friends. I had booked two rooms at the Devra for the four of us (two couples) well in advance, communicating via email. We spent a week at the Devra, which served as our base in Udaipur. I can honestly say that our stay at the Devra was a highlight of our trip to India. The rooms are very clean, comfortable, quiet, and reasonably priced. Major Durga Das and his wife Jyoti are warm and gracious hosts, and the dinners (home-cooked by Jyoti) are exceptional - so good that we ate all of our dinners at the Devra. The rooftop terrace offers a beautiful view of Udaipur and is is a wonderful place to sit and relax with a cup of chai masala.
We give the Devra our highest recommendation for anyone visiting the Udaipur area.

Devra is a nice, cozy little inn, situated at the top of a little hillock surrounded by fields and greenery, at the outskirts of Udaipur. It is a nice, secluded place, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, yet not so far away as to be out of the way. The location provides awesome views all around.

The room we had was on the top floor, just next to the open terrace. From there, in the evening, the lights of Udaipur were really great to see. There was also a nice verandah with chairs where we could sit and relax. We were alone there (the other room on top was unoccupied) and the privacy and peace were something I believe we would not have got at any other hotel in Udaipur.

The owners - Major Das and Jyoti Jasol, were very welcoming and cordial - the Major kept us entertained with stories about his inspiration to build Devra, how it was built, and the hardships they faced. They have a very very good eye for interior decoration, and the rooms, as well as the entire inn, are very tastefully decorated.

Breakfast is generally fruits, cornflakes, eggs and bread, along wih tea or coffee, and is served on the back verandah, overlooking fields as far as one can see. Lunch and dinner are typical Rajasthani food, prepared by the two staff in the kitchen, and served piping hot. Breakfast is complimentary, but lunch and dinner are charged.

The temple on the premises is an old structure, and the puja done there in the mornings by the local people (I forget if it was a daily or weekly ritual) is another thing which was unique to Devra. The Major and Jyoti both left us alone to explore around, and the two staff were always there on hand if we needed anything. Overall, it was a very relaxing, peaceful two days that w spent at Devra.

Devra is not cheap by traditional Indian standards, specially food and transport, but if you are willing to spend a little bit extra, the value for money is amazing. If 5 star hospitality is what you want, with massages, television, music, and the standard things you get at an expensive hotel, you will not find that here. However, if you like nature, want peace and tranquility, and want to be experience in typical Rajasthani culture, food and hospitality, you will love Devra.

We certainly did.

Jyoti and Durga made our four night stay ones to remember. Rooms were excellent, with crisp white sheets and fluffy towels.
Durga enjoyed sharing his interest in bird watching and was happy to show us around the farm.
Jyoti was also on hand to offer hints on how best to spend our time in Udaipur.

Food was delicious and the setting perfect for watching sun set from the verandah. Really enjoyed walking in the countryside surrounding Devra.

I was bit suprised that the hotel had such a high recommendation.

I thought the price was quite high for what you get. But Indian hotels are getting very expensive for nothing. In this way, it is possibley normal price in India.

The food was good, but I did not find it wonderful.

For me, it was an average hotel.
