“Beautiful spot but was not what we expected”
Reviewed 5 January 2010

The location is beautiful and perfect when you stay for at least more than one night. Otherwise it is much better to stay in the city as it is a couple of miles outside the city.
Our room was however very noisy and the shower water was always running cold after 2 minutes. The staff was friendly, sometimes a bit slow (caculate in your programme at least an hour for the breakfast), but we didn't really mind that. What we did find somewhat dissapointing was the - in our opinion - quite coldness of the 2 owners, which made us feel serveral times not really at ease. We expected a bed and breakfast where you would feel at home and with warm welcoming owners (as we wanted to experience the " at home feeling" instead of a non- personalhotel ), but the place is being extended and now more set up like a hotel but then without facilities of a real hotel. Sorry but this is just our personal opinion. House staff was very friendly though.

Positive: Quite, away from city, nice for a couple, relaxing.. BUT a big NO because....

Negative: Away from city, in middle of on where, not easy to get transportation, no room service, no TV (kids get really bore, even for adults no News), rooms are not equiped with intercom to contact anyone in hotel. You have to go down 20 stairs to get to your room, and there is no one available to answer or help you in middle of night if there is any emergency.Home cooked food but very avg. No heating arrangement during winter. Extra beds are not comfortable and even the folding bed was broke while my daughter was sleeping. Staff is not professional, so you can't expect even 2 star service.

* No Phone lines
* No internet
* No reception
* No security
*No TV in rooms, not even in common area.

I been to many hotels from 5 star to models or even to some remote motels in USA on a highway in middle of no where, But never regretted so much. This is a worse hotel I have stayed in my life when I have to rate it on service, security, convenience. I was forced to stay there because owner declined to refund the money. They're big flip flop, & manipulative.

There is not really a check-in. There is no reception. You litterly have to go up 20 stairs and look for a help if you need anything. The only point of contact is owner's mobile, which I found turned off when I called at 9:30 p.m. There is no securiy in night except two dogs. So you're your own.

They also don't seems to be registered, and for safety propespective they don't even register they guest, don't check their IDs. They don't follow any fire safety precaution, no lights are turned in night.

**If you happen to choose or planning to stay at this hotel after reading all positive reviews, don't pay in advance, if for some reason you don't like this woner will not return the money.

I was so upset and felt hostage there for 4 nights because they were not willing to work out a exit for me. I even request to cut 1 night, but they didn't agree. I know it's very difficult for small, one man show business to take loss. But it just left me with so much anger and they spoil my whole trip and New year Eve. This was the first time we had to sleep at 10:30 p.m on New Year eve in freezing night without heater and on a broken bed. This was my worse New year eve of my life.

All places are not for everyone, if owners would have understood it and refunded my money and let us go, This could be a pleasant for both of us, but he forced me to take extreme step. I even left their hotel without telling them, I even didn't want say good bye!! I'm going to sue the travel agent and report this hotel for not following security measures. How could you not register people staying at your hotel and no check their IDs??? Come on.. you don't think country safety is important.

Our website explains well about our concept, however we take this opportunity to let our future guests and the travel agents in particular know about our concept.

Devra is essentially a B&B or a first class home stay. It can also be called a colonial style farm house with Indian aesthetics. Our location is on the outskirts of the city. Udaipur being a small city we are ten minutes drive away from the city centre. The quality of accommodation is at power with 3/5 star accommodation but it is NOT a hotel. We are nature oriented and focus mainly on organic and local lifestyle. Away from the hustle-bustle city life yet not so far. Devra is in sound, light and air pollution free area. No television or electronics in the room.

In spite of making all these things clear to the travel agent they still send guests ill informed and they land up in this situation. We request them to please refrain from making such deals which brings unhappiness to us and to our guests. We are not responsible for a mistake of the travel agent. Such guests should seek redresses from the travel agent and not us. They should ask the right question at the right time if they are booking through a travel agent.

These guests in particular after having all four meals in Devra and using our taxi services left without paying early morning in darkness. Had it been a hotelier he would have easily blocked their exit route and would have handed them over to the police but Devra a registered home stay decide to just let them go away.

Allowing children to explore the nature around Devra and play with small dogs, roosters and geese would have been a healthy and happy way for any children to play outdoors.

The reviews of Devra is a testimony of our concept and services.

GOD BLESS THEM

Got to Udaipur on New Years Eve and picked up at the airport as promised. The Devra is about 15 minutes out of Udaipur away from the hustle and bustle of the city. We were greeted by the Major who proudly showed us around the property and explained the history and development of it. The room we were given was beautiful and very well appointed looking out over the planned riding school and polo fields! The entire complex was very clean, modern and well presented. Staff was superb - always willing to help. We were transported to and from Udaipur city by the same driver who picked us up at the airport. He was very reliable and an excellent driver. No cost was involved in being dropped off and picked up. We preferred to sight see on our own but I believe there are trips organised by the Major. Overall it was a special place to stay for New Years Eve and it's highly recommended.

Major Das and his wife run this very nice, no frills bed and breakfast in Udaipur. It has a feel of a good farmhouse. It is a good place to stay if you are looking to have a relaxed time off in nice ambience middle of no where. If you are looking to stay here while on your trip to Udaipur this is rather inconvinient with remote location with bad connectivity.

The biggest drawback is the price, it is pretty darn expensive for the simplistic experience you get. And all the services they provide can be up to twice the cost of similar alternatives. e.g. if you hire their car (instead of calling local travel agent) you pay a much hire price, like wise everything else, service is like B&B but the price tag is five star.

I had a nice experience staying at this hotel. Service was good. Staff was humble & cooperative. We were really happy with our stay and only the food part was bad. Food did not tasted like it should. If they get this bit right it will become an awesome place. My room was on top floor and you can get a glimpse of the city from your window Next time I visit this city I'll surely stay in this hotel.

We had done our homework when we selected Devra as our accomodation choice, but we were not prepared for such hospitality. Even though we were there for such a short while, Mr. Das and his wife made sure we were comfortable. From giving sight seeing tips to eating options, the suggestions were really good. At one point when we wanted to have dinner at Shiv Niwas Palace ( one needs prior reservation incase you are not a guest there) we were not able to book a table in advance and just a small mention of the same to Mr. Das, resulted in us having a meal there! The other staff at Devra is also friendly and courteous but the show was stolen by their two dogs, Rupert and Oscar. They are the cutest pair of dogs we have ever seen and extremely friendly.
About the place: The rooms are very big, and the entire house is tastefully done up with big sit out areas, balconies and terraces all around the rooms. It is away from the city bustle and gives a great view of the City Palace. If you want a comfortable homely environment, this is it.
