“A nice little place”
Reviewed 10 May 2009

The hotel is well situated, on the banks of Lake Pichola. It offers great views over the lake, but only if you have the right room. We had corresponded to reserve what was advised as the best lake facing room, Room 203, which has a great corner view . Although we were told that it would be provided if available, as nothing had been said about it not being available, we assumed it was. Upon arriving, it transpired that the room wasn't available. We had been allocated the next best room, Room 202. This also has a lake view but only from 1 window and although stated to be a full lake view, i would put it down as a partial view. However, we then elected to stay in a non-lake view room because, to be frank, the hotel has a marvellous lake view from it's restaurant, such that there isn't really a need to stay in a lake view room. Indeed, better to stay in a non-view room and spend the money saved on something else. The owner of the hotel, Mr Jain, is pleasant and the front desk service is generally fantastic, especially the young lad who was on duty much of the time, Bhupendra Singh. We found him most helpful and accomodating. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The restaurant is nice and the food good, although only vegetarian. As aforesaid, it has a great view. The hotel has a sister hotel nearby, the Jagat Niwas Palace, which has similarly splendid views and a nice restaurant with a very similar menu but at higher prices. The rooms at the Mewar Haveli are great value. The only negative point was that we had requested a reservation to be made at the Ambrai restaurant on the opposite bank of the lake and were informed that it had been made but on arriving, there was no reservation. Luckily, the restaurant was not busy (but I would not really rate the food. That at the Jagat Niwas is much better). Our stay, even taking into account the room mix-up (which in hindsight worked in our favour), was great and I would highly recommend this for a stay in Udaipur.

We wanted a hotel in a central location and this is exactly what we got. Amongst the narrow cobbled streets is Mewar Haveli just a 5min walk to the main entrance of the City Palace and Jagdish Temple. It is surrounded by restaurants, shops, internet stores and local history sights on the doorstep. The hotel itself is about a 10min ride on a tuktuk to the station (for Jaipur, Agra & Mumbai) and 20min tuktuk ride to Monsoon Palace.

Our room had a wonderful view of Lake Pichola, Lake Palace and Jag Mandir. Beautifully decorated with hand painted Indian patterns and artwork, clearly a lot of time and hardwork went into decorating the rooms. Equipped with a ceiling fan, air conditioning, shower with hot water and TV, all in full working order. On the floor above our room is the restaurant with more exquisite views of the lake from the daybeds. Above the restaurant is the terrace. Although with little shade, the views become more breathtaking. Here you can also see the wonderful architectural designs of the Jagdish Temple.

The staff are very friendly and were always attentive to our needs. One late evening we had the terrace to ourselves. We had our dinner on the terrace daybed, under the stars with the local fireworks going off. The staff spoilt us with extra candles and let us enjoyed the views of Udaipur by night on our own.

The food is very reasonable for vegetarian dishes and the meat dishes are more expensive. The food is freshly prepared and excellent. Other restaurants we went to nearby weren’t as good or as attentive. Mewar Haveli made our stay something special.

We loved our stay at Mewar Haveli and have wonderful memories. We would certainly stay here again.

P.S The best room in the hotel is Room 203 with the best views of the lake.

Mewar Haveli is located right on the banks of Lake Pichola and has a rooftop restaurant that offers great views.
But other than location, there's not ,much else that I can really recommend.
After a lot of travel, I went to my room to turn in for the night... only to find dirty sheets that required changing. Not the best way to start a stay.
Also, do not book tours, train tickets etc through the hotel.. you will have to pay hefty margins and whats more the cab drivers will crib all thru the day.
There are better hotels in the area.. one can opt for those.

We spent two nights in Mewar Haveli; after originally trying to book a lake view room, which was unavailable we opted for the cheapest room, which at 990Rs a night was excellent value. The room itself was spotless and comfortable and the staff were polite. The hotel's dining room and roof terrace were one of the hotel's best features, offering stunning views over Lake Pichola and the Lake Palace Hotel.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in late February & my top tip would be to book early for a lake view room. We booked 2 months before our trip but a lake view room (room 201) was only available for 3 out of the 4 nights so we opted for a deluxe non-lake view room for the other night. Although the price difference was only Rs 250, the non-lake view room (room 105) was much smaller & we had to keep the curtains closed otherwise people coming down the street outside could look directly into the room! The one plus point in this room was the cushioned window seat but apart from that, the bigger, brighter & airier lake view room was far better.

A really lovely thing about this hotel was the restaurant overlooking the lake & the roof terrace. Both had cushioned seats with fantastic views over the lake as well as standard tables & chairs. I loved watching the sunset from the rooftop. The food was good value compared with another hotel resturant we tried nearby which was more expensive but where the food was no better. Service was excellent throughout the hotel & the staff were friendly. Making travel arrangements with them for a half day tour within Udaipur, a train ticket from Delhi to Haridwar & a taxi to the airport saved us a lot of time & hassle too. Their internet connection was also very good.

The hotel is well located being only around 5 mins walk from Jagdish temple & Bagore Ki-Haveli, 10-15 mins from the City Palace & 30 mins from the boat trip jetty. Nearby there are also many shops & places at which to eat & have massages.

Our room, 2001 was very pretty and had a great view of the lake but it was quite small, with very little room around the bed.

the hotel restaurant and roof area have amazing views and theis is a very good mid-range option.

The management were helpful and friendly and if, as were were, you are offered alternative accomodation at the nearby Athiya Haveli because the Mewar is full its not a bad option. Theres no view but the rooms are bigger and the bathrooms more modern.
