“Nice place !”
Reviewed 29 June 2011

I'll start of negatively first . 24 hour hot water wasn't available . Its limited to the morning hours. The restaurant was under renovation but there is a place called Anna's right around the corner which I must say was the best food I had ever eaten ! Taj, Leela, etc cannot hold a candle to this small restaurant in the middle of Udaipur !!

Anyways , Baba Palace ... Decent room, clean ,aircon works well . No high class facilities . But for 1200bucks its a real steal !! The staff and the owner were extremely polite . He charged us only for a half day on our last day even though we were there till 5 in the evening !
I recommend it for those who need just a clean, aircon room right in the city center at the cheapest rate ! At this price nothing comes close .

The good points:
- really good location within a short walk of many sites and opposite of the temple.
- rooftop restaurant offers good views of the temple and has decent food.

Bad Points:
- Very overpriced.
- shower was awful with no hot water, just sat under a lukewarm tap
- sheets were badly stained, had them changed were still stained. Third time received clean sheets.
- TV had really bad signal (although not bothered by TVs it was expensive to stay there)

Looking through some other reviews, we had a similar experience.
Our room was looking straight at the temple, which was the best thing about the room, and the worst. The windows were thin, and we were woken during the night and morning with bells and singing that seemed to go on forever.
The place was overpriced. We payed about 1250Rs per night, while my friend stayed down the road in a bigger room (without the view) for 200Rs per night (unfortunately we had prebooked and payed online).

The water pressure was a joke, and there was no hot water.

There was wifi (not free) but reception in our room wasn't the best.

Breakfast was good, not a buffet like other places, but a tasty omelet with juice, toast and coffee. We ate at the rooftop restaurant for breakfast, which also had a fantastic view.

The staff were attentive, and while not 5 star service, I have no complaints regarding their service.

All in all I think there are better value places to stay in Udaipur, but Baba is at least bright, clean, safe and central if you cant find anything else.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in January. Can we say how beautiful Udaipur is and you must visit it! But... do not stay at this hotel. Although it is very central, there are much better deals, such as Jaiwana Haveli with views of the lake and lake palace for much better prices! This hotel was very overpriced for what you got... it was freezing in winter when we were there, the matresses were old and worn, you only get a tiny old style tv, a wet style shower in the bathroom with no shower cublicle, no hot water, it seemed that the hot water was turned off at certain hours of the day? They had 10 year olds serving food for room service. The hotel was opposite the temple with very loud music played at all hours of the day/night. Although it was noisy, the music was very happy :) The rooftop restaurant had great decorating and views, but very empty with no atmosphere. Also, no wifi. We would not reccomend this hotel. Lonely Planet got this one wrong....

This place would be fine if it was cheap but it's not, it's extremely overpriced for what it is. During the night the blasting temple speakers felt as though they were in the room, the temple's proximity is not the positive Lonely Planet makes it out to be. The room was tiny but clean, t.v. had no western options and was of poor quality and the shower produced no hot water. None of this is unusual for India but when you can walk down the road to Krishna Niwas and pay 300 rp less for a quiet, clean, big room with a plasma that has cable tv, a bathroom that has hot water and a rooftop restaurant that has an amazing view of the lake why would you stay here?
