Amantra Shilpi Resort
Ranked #4 of 165 Hotels in Udaipur

Reviewed 5 July 2012

Udaipur is abundant with hotels and resorts and so this place - Shilpi Resort was a welcome surprise to visit and experience!! A very nicely done place - open lawns, plenty of greenery, fruit trees (we could see loads of mangoes on the trees in front of our balcony), swings, pool, etc - gave an impression of a nice open resort place. The rooms are more like blocks of cottages - two/ four rooms in each block - spacious, with open balconies to enjoy the weather and the greenery. The general hygiene levels are good - be it the toilets, the rooms, or in general the maintenance of the property. The staff was nice and courteous - though a bit slow/ lazy i must admit - in tune with the environment i guess (!!) - but overall nice. The food i would say is average - but given the value for money the property this place offers, we didnt mind staying here and enjoying the local cuisines and the rich cuisines elsewhere in Udaipur.

Another interesting thing worth noting about this resort is its location - the first time we were there, it was like - where is this property hidden?? So actually it is certainly a bit off the main road, kind of deserted location - but if you are with a group/ family then you dont really mind it. It is also next to Shilpgram - a very good offbeat handicraft place - we went there with not too much expectations - but to our surprise, the artisans and the work that is done there and the way Shilpgram has been developed is quite a eye-opener in many ways. Was sad to see that such a good developed place doesnt attract crowds in Udaipur - maybe it was the weather/ time of the day that we were at, that it had a deserted look - but it was nice since we got a lot of attention and were treated to some very good live handicraft making display by the artists out there.

Overall - Shilpi Resort - good nice green cozy place, nestled away from the hustle bustle of Udaipur and a steal at the prices they offer. Do go there if you are planning a group visit with multiple rooms - thoroughly enjoyable.

I can’t even tell you how upset I was by the unprofessional, rigid, and hostile treatment we received at Shipi Resort.

I had come the day before to see their pool with my friend’s children (1 boy age11 and 2 girls ages 15 and 17) to see the facilities and decide if we would like to go swimming there the following day. The front desk person seemed strange even then was more interested in barking out rules then welcoming us to the resort.

As the adolescent girls are from the local community and are from a traditional but educated household there is no way their parents would allow them to wear regular, revealing bathing suits. So I asked them to wear stretchy leggings and t-shirts.

When we arrived at the resort we were told that the girls were required to wear swim suits and we were shown some revealing suits they could have borrowed from the resort. Despite the local and family customs this would have been even more unheard of as there were 3 adolescent boys in the larger part of the pool.

The manager was friendly, lovely and sympathetic but ultimately the owner said the girls could not swim in the clothes they were wearing.

So fine we compromised. The girls wanted their brother to be happy so him and I decided to swim for 30 minutes or so. As the girls were already disappointed about not being able to swim themselves I told them to just roll up their leggings and to put their feet in the pool while we swam in the small pool.

After about just 10 minutes some goon came charging at all of us screaming “Not allowed!! Not allowed!!” I screamed back that they were only putting their feet in the pool and not swimming so he should leave us alone. Then this stupid little man from reception came out and started screaming again that they were not allowed to put their feet in the pool. I told him to refund our money then and we will leave and he said there would be no refunds. The girls were a little scared by these men screaming at us and went to sit on the lawn.

Long story short after around 30 minutes in the water and being attacked for about 20 minutes of it we left. Other than those 3 teenage boys there was no one else but us in the entire pool area and I didn’t see anyone staying at the resort. A small compromise on the part of the hotel to at least let the girls put their feet in the pool for a short time on a hot day while we swam could have made for a nice experience for all of us. My review would be that Shipi Resort is a mid level resort with a low level mentality. There are plenty of other, nicer, more central places with views to swim in Udaipur and we certainly won’t ever come back to stupid Shipi Resort.

we were in udaipur in the month of December to celebrate our new year. The whole resort was well maintained and the best thing is that it is near shilpgram.after seeing all the attractions of the city we all went to shilpgram for shopping.and the new year arragements were very nicely done.we enjoyed a lot in disc as well as outside the disc too bcoz some cultural programmes was arranged
likewise tambola and paper dance was also done
all the arragements done by the shilpi resort on the new year eve made a awesome new year 4 us......

I am writing this review while still in the resort..Actually feeling bad that we will leave this place tomm to head back home..This place was just what we needed...A very well maintained resort with great service and food...its located away from the hustle bustle of main city and still is well connected, so u get to enjoy the city as well as the tranquillity of being in the lap of nature...My kid was excited to see the ducks and for the first time saw grasshoper, cricket (the sound making bug) etc which you dont get to see alot in cities and i loved her reaction....The staff is very hostipitable and they go that extra mile to make u feel part of priviledged lot..Would love to come back soon..

We stayed there in April. On first look it was a old resort and we thought while entering if at all it will be a good choice. But after entering the resort we were proven wrong. It was a very nice stay. The rooms are very well maintained and service is really quick. Food is really excellent and should be tried.

I visited 'Shilpi resort' during second week of March-2011 with my wife, parents and my kid. It was indeed a memorable stay in the resort. It is situated away from the cities hustle- bustle.... situated in the surroundings of hillocks and in its neighbourhood there is 'Shipl Gram' a project of Central Govt of India.
The staff of the hotel was very co-operative during the stay. I actaully had booked in the standard room, but since, all the standard rooms were occupied, the manager upgraded us in the premium room- without any extra cost!!!
The hotel has very good quality of cuisine, a nice swimming pool and a good garden.
I would strongly recommend this resort for all those who want a calm getaway....

Stayed here for 2 nights during the Diwali weekend with a package rate including breakfast and dinner. The resort was full of Gujarati families and probably understaffed because service was pathetic. Breakfast was okay but the dinner buffet was just veggie stuff and extremely spicy. We had to make a fuss to get a single chicken dish. A request for a glass of milk took several reminders and then it was finally delivered an hour later ! Needless to say we went out for lunch. Room service dishes were not cleared for 2 days, the lawns and the little water structure were littered with rubbish, maintenance was poor. The swimming pool was full of people who had jumped in fully clothed.

We had a ground floor room towards the back of the resort and it was rather small but the bathroom was large, hot showers good. The large lawn area was good for kids to run around and play. Ample parking was also a plus point.

We had our own car so location was not a problem, but the hotels is located away from the main city and right next to Shilpgram. This could be a decent place to stay but overcrowding, non-existent service and poor food totally spoiled it.
