“Average hotel with average ammenities”
Reviewed 29 March 2010

I visited Karohi Haveli in March 2010 and stayed in a super deluxe room. The weather was hot. Lake Pichola was dry and there was no view of the lake from my room as promised by my travel agent. Rooms are average and doesnt give a feel that we are staying in a haveli. Basic ammenities like air conditioner were average in the room i stayed in. Food was good and the hospitality was great. As mostly foreingers visit Udaipur, therefore the hotel's main point of concern was to serve them better. But i was also taken care of well by the hotel. Places of interest in Udaipur like City Palace, Jagdish temple, Gulab Bagh, Vintage car collection, Zoo, Apno Dhani are near to the hotel. I would recommend to vist Apno Dhani for traditional Rajasthani food and dance.

I stayed the last two nights of Dec. 09 in the suite of this hotel: a large room on the top floor with sitting area, big windows with beautiful views to the (dried) end of the Pichola Lake and the mountains; big four-poster bed (but sheets & blankets too small), TV & ensuite bathroom…quite charming.

The roof top terrace offers a great view but the tablecloths were not clean and neither were the plastic chairs, and there were no lights. The restaurant is unwelcoming and below the standard of the rest of the hotel - too bad the décor doesn’t reflect the Rajasthani atmosphere. The imposed New Year’s Eve meal was too expensive and they didn’t bother to add some candles on this special occasion, so we ate almost in the dark (except for the fireworks around midnight). Service at the restaurant was poor as was the food.

The location is fine, lovely lawn area and patio, quiet neighborhood. The reception staff was friendly. In my view it’s not worth the money and you can get better (or similar) for less.

We wanted to stay at a traditional hotel since our other stays were at 4/5 star hotels. This hotel cannot be beaten for value in both room charges and extraneous costs such as internet access. The staff are friendly beyond belief and will arrange anything for you. Private car from the airport ran 500 INR, internet access was 60 INR per half hour. The location is wonderful with a rooftop view overlooking Lake Pichola and a lovely English garden where the dog watches over the plants in case the sacred cows wander in. The food is adequate, but there are plenty of restaurants close by if you choose to venture out. I read some bad reviews concerning hot water availability, but my experience was the water goes off overnight, so if you arise before 6am the water is cool. After that watch out,it is burning hot. Make sure to stay at least three days in Udaipur, it is well worth it. Not so many people begging as in Delhi and Mumbai. The local mosque keeps up a constant background of prayer calls to add to the mystique of the location

We stayed at teh hotel for 2 nights in January 2010. The rooms were ordinary (and we stayed in the "best room" the palace suite). There was an awful smell in the bathroom/ toilet ...which even after complaints did not go away. And at one time black water came out of the tap for almost 2 minutes (i think it was sewage water..which would also explain teh smell). While the service at teh front desk was good...the service and food at the restaurant was terrible. The manager actually was downright rude. The worst part is teh entrace to the hotel...our car barely made it through teh entrance. In teh same price range there are better hotels around (try amet haveli)...but stay away form this one.

Driving up to this place was a little bit worrying - it's accessed through a tiny alley off a pretty rough street. But it's actually a great location. An easy walk into town, but away from all the noise and hassle. Plus great views across to the City Palace. Our room was spacious with a great day bed/window seat with that lovely view. Which was very much appreciated as I had the obligatory bout of Indian food poisoning while in Udaipur, and that bed was a great place to recuperate! The staff couldn't have been more helpful, especially as we had to stay an extra night because I couldn't travel. They were attentive and concerned without being intrusive. One downside was that the bed seemed very short - I'm 5'10" and I couldn't lie stretched out. Perhaps it was just our room? On the plus, the best and most powerful shower in all of Rajasthan!

I recently stayed here on Christmas Day and I thought I would share my experience. Although, this hotel from the outside seems very charming with a nice lawn, cute dog and beautiful rooftop, this hotel has some problems that will keep it from being a good hotel.

The Good: Great view and rooms appear nice at first glance. Nice rooftop

The Bad: Food was horrible, at least the breakfast. We were very disappointed with it and never ate there again after the first night, despite having a free breakfast included.

The Ugly: The service and attention to detail. Our toilet didn't flush the entire 3 nights that we were there. When we brought it to the attention of the staff, they would take a day to finally come up, attempt to fix it and after one flush, broken again. I know this seems trivial and we are in India but we paid a lot of money for this hotel. The rooms just weren't cleaned properly (never cleaned under the bed for example). We also decided to leave a day early and they refused to give any money back (despite having booked the room to other guests for that last night!).

After writing this, it seems really petty and I am a very seasoned traveller but we just didn't have a nice experience here. We loved Udaipur but I wouldn't recommend this hotel unfortunately (though I would love to take their boxer home with me!).
