“Sushma's cooking class”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 March 2011

We really enjoyed our cooking class with Sushma, learning how to make several main dishes, in addition to masala tea and chapathi bread. We also enjoyed eating all the food at the end of the class! There was some mix-up with the timing of our class reservation and that of another group (who showed up mid-way through ours), so do be sure to call or drop in to confirm in advance of showing up just in case.

I stayed a little more than a week in the Krishna Niwas Hotel in old town Udaipur on the recommendation of a friend who stayed there four years ago. Jairaj and Susma Soni soon made me feel a part of the family. The hotel's location offers lovely views from the rooftop terrace (where they are happy to serve you breakfast, although no other meals are on offer save for the product of Sushma's cooking class to the chefs of the day). Jairaj has decorated its interior using his long-developed skills as a celebrated painter of miniatures. The cost was reasonable at around $30 a night for a room with a lake view. The town itself is, of course, very picturesque if somewhat overrun with tourists. Jairaj was most helpful with advice about travel arrangements and the like; and Sushma's cooking class was enlightening indeed. My approach to making chapatis will forever benefit from her guidance.

We had a room with a view on the lake. Although narrow, this view was worth the extra roupies. A better view is offered from the roof, where you can actually eat/drink your own food.
Very well located in the heart of Udaipur, you can access the palace, the temple, the boats in a few minutes of pleasant walk. Expect to pay 50Rs maximum to/from the UDZ train station by auto rickshaw. In the very close neighbourhood, we found everything a tourist can need: Internet. rooftop restaurants, shopping, massage, etc.
We attended the expensive cooking class taking place almost daily inside the hotel and enjoyed it very much. Note it is more a class than a workshop.
The room itself was clean and well decorated, with a sofa next to the window, making it quite a romantic place where to stay. The bed was large, with a firm comfy mattress.
We've been also pleased by the convenient laundry service.
Overall, a very pleasant little nest.

The staff were really friendly and helpful, the room was fantastic, the wall mounted plasma had cable and the bathroom was extremely clean with a consistently hot shower. Our room also had a lovely bay window with a cushioned sitting area. The rooftop restaurant has an amazing view of the lake as the hotel is on a quiet street right on Lal Ghat. A great hotel, absolutely recommended!

This hotel is a great midrange hotel stay.
Its only 11 rooms and its Family run. The location in Udaipur is perfect and you are close to everything.
All the rooms are hand painted by the owner and his pupils and some have a nice view over the lake. We took the cookingclas and it was great. They had even made a cake for my dad who was turning 60. That made us very happy.
Sorry about the English, I’m from Sweden

Sushma's classes are fantastic, besides being a great cook she knows how to teach anyone. She can entertain everyone from people who never had contact with Indian cuisine to professional chefs in search of news. Always with good humor and with a smile she surprises us with her tips, knowledge and kindness.

We have stayed for one night at Krishna Niwas. It is central and the price is reasonable. It is a beautiful house and you have a side view to the lake. The staff at the reception is helpful but the rooms are not really clean. There is an acceptable breakfast on the rooftop but starts only at 8am.

They have organised a car to Jodhpur and it was really good price and our driver was excellent. So don't go to the travel agencies in Udaipur, they are asking twice as much for the same category.

If you like mid-range, nice hotels, I cannot recommend this one but it was ok for one night. While you are there, try the restaurant at Jagat Niwas nearby, it is fabulous.

Krishna Niwas needs certainly to improve their service as well as the cleanless of the rooms. They have really potential with their lovely house.
