I stayed at Swaroop Vilas while attending a friend's wedding in Udaipur. The hotel is very well located, overlooking a small lake-Swaroop Sagar and is within 2-3 kms of most of the main attractions of the city like the City Palace and Pichola lake. The hotel interiors are well done in a style similar to a heritage hotel. The hotel even has a nice rooftop bar with a view of the lake which is quite romantic in the evenings. The hotel however does not live up to the potential offered by the location and the ambience, with the staff being inefficient and the receptionist being curt in responding to most queries. Overall, the hotel seemed overpriced for the value offered in terms of room, service and food. There are mutiple hotels in Udaipur which can provide a better staying experience (minus the lake side location) for a lesser price.

Pro:
Location, room, general amenities

Cons:
1. Local staff who are honest people but lack professional hospitality skills
2. Rooms are not provided with decent bedding stuff like quilts, heaters, dryers, etc
3. Buffet Breakfast had limited options. Breakfast timings were till 10 AM only, which is also sad.
4. Staff started calling for check-out @ 10 AM. This was very disgusting n dis-appointing,

Room Tip: Book room facing the lake..Family Room 606 is ideal for a family of 4..All rooms have av..The only draw back is the hotel does not provide for Heating in the winter months

I had visited this hotel a year ago to choose an affordable hotel for a tour in an expensive city. I was impressed at that time, but now believe that the rooms shown me were of a superior quality to those we occupied during my tour last November. When I tried to tell the management of my disappointment, they denied that they had a superior category. I don't believe them. Our rooms were not bad, they just were not of the quality I had expected. They were clean and comfortable. The two hitches are that the bathrooms, which were only ok, share airvents with three other bathrooms and you can hear literally everything that goes on and/or that is said in each of the other ones. Not a pleasant experience.
The dining room was inefficient and the food only mediocre. Although none of us used the pool, it looked clean and pretty. The massages in the spa were exceptional, both for men and women. I would highly recommend those. The location is ok, but not central. There are auto rickshaws or taxis available to go into the old city and other attractions or you can walk, but it is a bit far. For the price, it is not a bad choice, but there are others in the city that I would prefer...

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights. We had booked a more expensive Super Deluxe room, but when we arrived at the hotel, we were very disappointed. We didn't like our room at all. It wasn't as spacious as we had hoped and the furniture was a bit shabby. The bathroom was horrible, with damp patches and peeling plaster. We complained to Reception and were shown three other rooms in the same section of the hotel - they were all very similar in size and standard. All the bathrooms we saw were mouldy with damp patches. The chairs on the balconies were covered in stains and the bedspreads were also stained. We chose the best room from those on offer but were not happy with the standard for the money we had paid. We complained again the following day and were told we could move the next day. After 2 nights, we were moved to the rear section of the hotel. Our room was lovely - much more spacious and nicely furnished. The bathroom was immaculate with a huge shower and no signs of damp! We feel that we were fobbed off with a standard room rather than a super deluxe room during our first two nights because the hotel was full with a tour party. The hotel itself is beautiful with immaculately maintained gardens and pool. The location is also good, in a quiet part of town overlooking a lake. Most of the staff were lovely, but the reception staff were not particularly friendly or helpful. The breakfast buffet was also disappointing. We ended up buying our own muesli as there was nothing healthy on offer and no fresh juices. We were also annoyed that free Wi-Fi was only offered for one hour a day and was then chargeable at 100 rupees per hour! This meant having to constantly go to reception for login codes and passwords. The signal strength was not very good either, which made paying for it even more annoying. This is not a cheap hotel, so to charge for Wi-Fi seems very unnecessary. However, I would give this hotel a "Very Good" rating if they had given us the room we had paid for at the start of our stay. If you decide to stay here, make sure you get a room at the rear of the hotel overlooking the pool (Nos. 401 - 408 or 501 - 508) not at the front of the hotel (Nos. 301 - 306 or the floor below) which need to be refurbished and let down the rest of the hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear of the hotel (401 - 408 or 501 - 508) are excellent. Rooms at the front of the hotel (201 - 206 or 301 - 306) need to be refurbished, especially the bathrooms.
