Good rooms, with a great view, but average food and service. Communicating in English is a big problem for the staff. The rooms are of medium size with good bathrooms.
The road to this resort is long and winding , so if you want to get to the hotel it will take you a good 45 minutes from the city. Other than the cultural entertainment , the life and the bustle of madurai can hardly be enjoyed from this remote place.

Great to experience the rich Tamil culture. Clean. Comfortable rooms built with aesthetic balance and based on vast sastra. The visionary couple who put this together have their hearts in the right place and the husband is an architect and she is an accountant so its a balance of head and heart!

I am an avid traveller always looking for local cultural immersion and Kadambavanam resort was pleasant surprise.

Location: This is about 40 mts from madurai Meenakshi amman temple. Located in a very beautiful scenic setting. You can see mango groves and coconut groves stretching through the valleys as far as you can see.

Cultural immersion : The owners are awesome and their passion for tamil culture was obvious as they immersed us in the Tamil experience with cultural programs. I am tamil living in New york and it was the perfect fix for the tamil experience that I was missing so much. They even have temple inside a resort with beautiful landscaping that is very rare to see in India. There is a big cultural centre where the events take place.

Food : We are strictly vegetarians. There was wide selection of tamil dishes and we were happy to find out that the dishes were very authentic. We actually took the time to appreciate the chef.

Accommodation : The rooms were excellent and beyond expectations. The look like traditional Indian homes from outside but has all the western standard amenities inside. I actually went to India after traveling for a month in Europe ( Paris , Berlin etc ) and had stayed in very good hotels and resorts. The rooms are comparable to any of the best resorts in Europe. I loved the shower especially..:) it is a open roof shower that gives the feeling of outdoors. I thought that was a very nice touch as you can see the sky while you shower. The beds were super comfortable and they had HBO ..! which was sweet as I can watch my fav Game of thrones. Most importantly everything was super clean. In India you can go to very good resorts and still have bad experience because of bad maintenance and poor customer service. Luckily we had a great experience here as it was clean and room service was very attentive and friendly.

Nearby activities - Highly recommend talking to the managers / owners as they have many activities available nearby.

Swimming pool - There is an amazing swimming pool that was almost finished. It is a pool that is almost like an infinity pool with an amazing view. Can't wait to see the completed version when I go there next time.

Gardens and Landscape - I loved the attention to details in the various gardens and landscaped through out the resort. It does make you feel very good and relaxed. I love to do pranayama and yoga. The gardens with great view provided the best setting for me to do relaxing pranayama outdoors with clean air.

Sun rise and Sun set - There is a rocky hill right in the resort that you can hike. You can reach the top in 15 - 20 mts. Once there you have breath taking views. Highly recommend the sun rise and sun set from this area.

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms that have open air showers. I believe all the rooms have it. But if not you bett...

This resort is not complete as in the pool is still being built, the manager told us that in the beginning and offered us a discount, so we were quite aware of what we were getting, we liked the isolation and relaxation of things, our kids didnt have much to do, but we wanted to just relax on our own and took some board games to keep them occupied, has the potential to be a great place.

This property was recommended to us by our travel booking company, but we found it a work "in progress". It purports to be a hotel that communicates the rural Tamil lifestyle to those not familiar with it, doing so via local activities. However, there is only one weekly cultural performance, and all other activities it offers are costly -- if you can get them at all. When we stayed, we were the only guests in a place with at least a half dozen cottages. The cottages are new and in good condition, but the property is too far out of town (Madurai) and too isolated - unless you watch TV in your room all day there is nothing else to do onsite.

During our stay, the property was still being built: the swimming pool was unfinished and the majority of the property was a dusty construction zone. If you like observing people putting bricks in place, this is the place for you! Perhaps in time when it is up and running it may be worth a visit, but certainly not in its current state. I felt annoyed that we were booked into a place that was by no means ready for business.

The Place atmosphere and location is one of the best around the Madurai city. It is located well away from city (around 25Km) hence less pollution and noise. All facilities are very good and it makes a great relaxing spot. The food was excellent and service was very good. Tamil cultural programs are held every Sunday and it is a must if you have interest ( though i didn't get a chance to see it).

Room Tip: Room on 1st floor have good view.

I am a 42 year old professor from Canada of Indian origin. A group and I stayed at Kadambavanam Resort for a workshop in May 2011. Kadambavanam is THE BEST place I have stayed at in India on my 10 trips there over the last 20 years.

It is not in the city of Madurai itself (which is a bonus) but at least 30-45 minutes away in the remote countryside. The resort is on a hilltop overlooking lush beautiful mountains and countryside as far as the eye can see.

The place consists of villas, each with 4 units. The interior design of the rooms are spectacular. The bathrooms are spotless, which is a sad rarity in India. The bathrooms are also huge and beautiful and could be featured in a magazine. The hot water supply, air conditioning and electricity are reliable, and the hotel is served by its own well. I recommend requesting a second floor room (if you are mobile) as the views and the breezes from there are beautiful -- some rooms have better views than others so you might want to request one of these rooms, or switch once you're there if possible.

I could have spent the whole day just staring out the large windows looking at the views, and then looking inside at the beautiful rooms. Given the noise, pollution and terrible smells of any city in India, this place is a true refuge.

At the same time, this is not some artificial Western-type Hilton where you become disconnected from the local culture and people -- quite the opposite. The whole concept of the owners is to reconnect their visitors with the local culture -- they have spent considerable money on building a cultural center where they support local artists and performers. At night, we were treated to the most authentic and beautiful night of dance performances and story telling. Meals were authentically South Indian served in a traditional way. The resort was still being completed when we were there -- and so everything was brand new and spotless. The dining hall was on the hilltop, with huge windows overlooking the valley.

The prices were very reasonable, compared to other 5-star resorts, which is what I consider this place to be.

Having said that, I have two complaints, one of which is a major one. Several members of our group had diarrhea, no doubt because of the lack of hygiene by one or more people in the kitchen. To be fair, they were just opening up and so perhaps the staff were still being trained. Hopefully, this problem has been solved. The other issue at the time was lack of a good internet connection in the rooms -- again, hopefully that problem has been solved.

I don't recall much Western-type food, but we were an "Indian" conference so perhaps that wasn't requested. If you don't like Indian food, you might want to check on this, but I suspect they will cater to your needs. This is a highly sophisticated place.

The staff were wonderful, generous, even sweet and genuine. If you want to watch TV, there is a full compliment of stations from around the world. There is excellent laundry service and any convenience you could ask for.

The owners represent the best in India -- they are kind, generous, cultured, sophisticated, worldly and giving. I want this place to succeed because they also really help the local community and are trying to keep ancient traditions alive and to share them with both Indians and the rest of the world. When my wife visit India later this year, I'm going to try to take her there.

They have an excellent conference facility -- our group was 50+ and we were there for 4 nights.

If you're vacationers, I would recommend spending 1-2 nights in Madurai to visit the spectacular temple complex there, but then spend at least 2-3 nights at Kadambavanam Resort either before or at the end of a long journey, to relax, unwind, feel the gentle breezes and be pampered, and experience what India may have been like generations ago.
