“The Best Place in Madurai”
Reviewed 25 March 2012

High on a hill overlooking Madurai lies the Gateway Pasumalai. After a security check at the gate you drive up the side of the hill and arrive at a lovely entrance. Reception is quick and thorough and we were given a nice quiet room on the outskirts of the property next to a garden. The room was quite large with a big storage chest and large enough bathroom with new fixtures and plenty of hot water. The pool is down some steps near the reception building in a lovely landscaped area. The pool is large enough with plenty of chairs and umbrellas and the water is cool and refreshing. Resident peacocks come around looking for food scraps and they will eat out of your hand if you give them peanuts. The restaurant overlooks the city with the Meenakshi temple complex in the background. Buffet breakfast was pretty standard but good. Trying to stay away from Indian food for a change we ordered the pasta for lunch which was a mistake - a small portion of terrible tomato sauce and pasta served in what looked like a small soup bowl and no parmesan cheese to put on top. We should have ordered Indian but were desperate for a simple lunch. We ordered Biryani in the room for dinner which was very good. But the ultimate outrage? I ordered a glass of mediocre Indian merlot wine (not imported) which came to about 4-5 ounces of wine in a small glass and was charged 700 rupees for it. I was shocked. Everywhere else we had been in India didn't charge half that for one glass (and they gave me more wine in the glass). I complained at checkout and the manager offered a 10% discount on the bill (big deal...) with a comment that they would look into their pricing for this. I won't hold my breath. But this is typical big hotel chain thinking. Internet was expensive for 24 hours. Honestly in this day and age I don't know why they don't get with the program and make it free. They can build a minimal cost for it in the room and build some good PR that way. Instead one is left feeling nickel and dimed for every cost. C'mon guys...customers would appreciate it....

Room Tip: Don't order wine. Don't order pasta. Order Indian food.

I have always been a fan of Taj group of hotels, and management of this hotel takes immense pain to maintain really high standards. So I reached the hotel way before my check in time, and to my surprise they got my room ready in just 10 mins, and icing on the cake was when I was upgraded to a superior room by the receptionist , free of cost :D
Room was really good and spacious and as this hotel is on a small hill, the view from the room was simply breathtaking. I could see the whole of Madurai from my room. Service is top notch and food was simply brilliant, this hotel is recommended to all travelles looking for a peaceful and beautiful place to stay in madurai

I stayed at this hotel on 8th March as well as 10th March and it was my first time. It was a pleasant and calm 4 minutes ride, including a hair-pin bend, up the hills which is totally owned by this hotel. It was said to be a summer guest house of a british higher official and still the victorian decor is maintained in all the rooms. The executive room was spacious and with a huge sit-out from where one can enjoy the nature and the city of Madurai at a level much lower than the hotel. Wow! Peacocks move around the hotel everywhere. They claim that there are 63 of them in that hill. I saw them everywhere outside my room, on the road, outside the breakfast room. In fact it was an amazing sight to see a couple from abroad enjoying the sight when peacocks were moving closer to their dining table which was in the verandah outside the dining room. Food was very good. All the facilities of a Taj property were available with the difference that the rooms are of the old victorian style. I really enjoyed my stays in this hotel both the times. As the hotel is in the midst of trees and plants, found mosquitoes, although they had repellents fixed inside. I would look for the next opportunity to take my family also there.

Room Tip: I think that only the executive rooms have those huge sit-outs and the view of the City down. make s...

We stayed here for one night in February, it is a stunning location, set on top of a hill overlooking the city and the temple. We thought the hotel was very pleasant with large colonial style buildings. The room was really comfortable with a great view. The internet was quite expensive, unusual not to be free. The restaurant was a bit chaotic and seemed to cater for large buffet type parties. Breakfast was lovely, and the staff were all very pleasant. The grounds and pool were fantastic.

This is a paradise above the noise and chaos of Madurai. Room was beautiful as were the gardens. Great food in the restaurant.

Don't bother with the massage. It was just an oil-rub on the surface; I wouldn't call it a massage,
and I coped with wafts of the masseuse's arm pits! Also, unlike the modesty of a massage in the USA, I was buck naked on a table.

stayed at thei resort feb 2012, was in the howard block cottages and overlooked the city of Madurai below. A restored old english manor from the 1800's it holds all it's quiet charm and ambience along with attentive great service and appointments. The rooms were huge and well appointed and spotless with historic splemdour. The pool with its hill top views are wondrous and having peackocks joiining you for breakfast on the terrace and demanding toast was just one of the many great things of this place.HIGHLY reccomended, a beautiful spot in a beautiful city.

Room Tip: the out buildings facing the city (howard block) were tremdous with a view and a large private lawn...

We had been touring South India for three weeks before arriving in Madurai and I’m noticing that my review titles are increasingly using words such as “oasis” and “haven”. The reason for this is that like most of the places that we have visited, Madurai has its attractions but it is still a South Indian city and consequently is noisy, hot, dirty, chaotic etc. and travelling on the road between locations can still be stressful...and we were in the back seat! The point being that by this time, having a nice, attractive, relaxing hotel with good facilities is becoming less of a luxury and more of a necessity.

Fortunately The Gateway satisfied these criteria very well. Our room was very spacious and comfortable without being luxurious and we relished the extensive, well maintained grounds and attractive heritage buildings as well as the magnificent views that the hilltop location afforded.

On our first night we decided not to eat at the hotel based on negative TA comments and had dinner at the rooftop restaurant at the Royal Court hotel in the city. 45 minutes after ordering we still had not received our appetisers and the food was poor when it finally did arrive. We had dinner at The Gateway on the second night and found the food tasty and the service good. Breakfast also had a wide variety buffet with freshly cooked options (e.g. omelettes, dosas, etc.)
