i along with my family were on a holiday to kerala, and driving past madurai, we had lunch at amma mess, had prawn biryani, fish fry , fish curry , mutton kheema balls, crab ommelete, honey chicken ,and all these were excellent . i have never had prawn biryani which tastes sooooo good , rather all items were good .the best part of the food is after having such tasty food , it was not oily heavy on the stomach . i drove for 200 kms after lunch without feeling loaded .i would love to visit this place again.

This place is famous for its non veg varities, though the food tastes good the settings, sloppy service and atmosphere would leave you with such a bad taste that you would never ever want to visit this restaurant again. Not worth trying.

Happened to visit my friends native, "Madurai". I was already abreast that Madurai is pretty famous for NoN Veg Food. After a discussion with Friends Dad, we zeroed down to visit Amma Mess for our dinner....
Ambiance is average has basement usually used for lunch and mezzanine is for dinner. seats are tables are clean and they claim it to be air conditioned however i could not feel it...
It really seems like a normal restaurant until you see the collage of photos on the wall... You have celebrities like Kamal and Rajni visiting or befriending the owner of the restaurant to people from political background as well..
Service was good for us, the normal plan of servers dividing the restaurant on basis of tables is implemented...
Cleanliness and hygiene: If you are visiting a south indian restaurant for the first time or experience the culture of eating on banana leaf instead of plate for the first time, it could be a welcome surprise. Leaves were very clean still if you persist you could wash it yourself as well :)
forget about spoons and fork i did not find any on the table, and did not bother asking for them as well...
Food... foood.. most important part for which you guys would be reading this if you are still reading it...

Mind you we went for dinner.
We were served "Kola balls"... Kola balls are kheema balls mixed with condiments and spices.. and deep fried till crisp.. It is lip smacking and is normally server in two's so that the server finds it easy to keep a count... LOL... what you just read is true cos no - one can stop on Kola balls until at least 6 of them are gulped...

The scrolling board does not show price of any scrips though runs an interesting menu... Please keep an eye on it...

Varieties of meat available.... Chicken, Mutton, Rabbit, Pigeon...

There was an interesting poster of vegetables with a big cross, which tells you more about what is to be expected at this restaurant...

Chicken gravy was on free flow.. unlimited servings along with the parotta or dosa that you order

We happened to order Chicken Dosa, Prawn Dosa and Crab Dosa(crab meat no shells ;))... these are dosas with respective stuffings and egg in it... so it would look a bit similar to Parathas served towards northern part of india... All these varieties of Dosa are a must to have, if you visit this restaurant.

Omelet varieties and few other dishes are very innovative...
Seafood Omelet
Bone Marrow Omelet
Rabbit Chops
Pigeon Roast

We also had the normal parotta which is made out of Maida towards south along with the chicken gravy...

Fish fry was average, could be because Madurai not being a coastal area fish was not pretty fresh, mind you it was marinated well and cooked to perfect crisp as well....

We tried Mutton sukka / chops which was pretty good as well.. I found the desert menu to be very boring however who cares for desert if you have had a non veg feast...

Bill came to Rs1300/- for 3 of us

I would suggest a must visit place if you visiting Madurai...
Piece of advise if you have more time.. try Konar mess as well, i have heard pretty good reviews about them as well...
