Don't judge Ray of Maya by it's surroundings!
We spotted this place from afar actually, since it's exterior are colorful and stood out..as we got closer we started to dread it. When we first arrived I almost thought "oh well thats money down the drain" you had to walk along a small dirt road it felt like walking towards a back-alley motel. So glad we chose this hotel (looking at the state of the area, I doubt we could've done any better) I was relieved to see the stairs up to the lobby was fairly clean and decorated in local motif.
The staff greeted us, very friendly. Checking in was a breeze and was showed to our room, fortunately there were ground staff to help with our 4 big bags up the stairs!
We chose this place for the price & how it looked in pictures, fortunately it was not far off from the real thing. The room was spacious, pretty clean, decent bedding, more local motif wall decorations, good working TV with some international channels. The bathroom was not disappointing.
We got a room facing the back yard so we're a bit protected from the main street noise. The room included breakfast but you had to cross the street to the restaurant.
Location of course is great just a few steps to Taj Mahal entrance. For the price I would recommend Ray of Maya.

Room Tip: Try get a room facing the back yard especially on a busy weekend, the view is not much but quieter.

We stayed at the Ray of Maya for six nights in January 2014. The hotel has a great location - just outside the Taj Ganz. It is down a path a short way from the main road so it is very quiet. The roof top patio is a great place to spend the early evening hours. The staff was friendly and helpful. We booked a suite which is not worth the extra money. All you get is a sitting area that is a very small space filled to bursting with furniture. While we had some concerns about the rooms cleanliness when we arrived (the sheets were stained and had small holes) on our last night when we looked under the mattress we were shocked to discover that the mattress had mold and lots of dust and hair stuck to it. The place has lots of potential but definitely needs to pay more attention to the state of the mattresses and linens.

We did the right thing to choose this hotel. Very near the Taj Mahal (at about 800 metres from the main entrance).
Staff is friendly and helpful.
The hotel is situated in an alley with a dirt road.
The concept of the hotel is modern - it looks and is very clean.
We had a spacious room with a large and modern bathroom (the best bathroom we had during our trip in India).
Everything what we needed was foreseen in the room (towels, double sheets, toiletpaper, television, etc..).
The restaurant is situated at the other side of the street (Maya restaurant).
The food is delicious. It is a clean restaurant with a very modern and clean ktitchen.

Minus: watch out for the dog turds in the dirtroad to the hotel. Use a torch when it is dark.

This review is made taking into account the Indian hotel standards.

We stayed one night at the Ray of Maya so we could visit the Taj and other Agra sights. A very clean hotel with friendly and accommodating staff. Our room, #6 had a partial view of the Taj Mahal but that was all they promised in their ad.

We also enjoyed both their roof top and downstairs restaurants. Very good food, fairly priced. Good table service from the staff.

Fortunately for us, ROM introduced us to the best tour guide in northern India, Armish Sharma. Armish is well-educated with a masters degree, knowledgeable about the sites, speaks serveral languages including English and Japanese, and has a very strong customer service orientation regarding taking care of his clients. We cannot recommend him highly enough! He is just a phenomenal tour guide.

We recommend ROM for anyone looking for a clean hotel and friendly staff and do not want to spend all of their money on a hotel room.

Room Tip: Two rooms have a partial view of the Taj. It is not a big view but you will be able to see a small p...

Stayed at the Ray of Maya hotel in mid January this year for 3 nights. Soon as the hotel was booked we had an email from a member of staff offering us free pick up from the train station to the hotel (we didm't actually require this but the offer was there!)
Our driver dropped us off at the Maya hotel, which is part of the same company - offering breakfast and food as Ray of Maya doesn't have a restaurant to offer. Couldn't see our hotel as it was dark but someone from the Maya hotel showed us there.
The hotel is lovely, very clean and staff are very kind and helpful. The location is however particularly unfortunate - in order to get to the hotel you have to walk down an alley way, which in the dark isn't particularly pleasant for 2 young female travellers! In fairness to the hotel, when leaving in the evening a member of staff escorted us to the road. (Obviously this wasn't possible when walking back to the hotel though).
Overall a good experience!

Only a 10 minute walk from the Taj Mahal which is the best thing. The hotel itself is set back from the road off a mud path. The room was ok, thoroughly average really, getting past the reception was a bit of a task, he is a stickler for admin. The colour scheme is all a bit odd and the bathroom very dated. Glad to have spent just the one night here, but it was not expensive and it is a great location.
