“Not a very enjoyable stay overall”
Reviewed 24 March 2014

The staff at this hotel are very friendly, however, that is the only nice thing I can say about this hotel. The rooms were not very clean, the food was quite terrible (possibly the worst food I have ever had), room service took an hour to get us a hair dryer after multiple requests...just to list a few things that went wrong. I am certainly aware of the fact that things are not always 100% perfect in any hotel - however, there were one too many things wrong at The Retreat. In terms of value for money, considering that this is India, this hotel is overpriced for the quality provided and we only ended up staying here because our tour company booked us at this hotel. In one word: Beware.

Positives:

Very modern and clean hotel.

Spacious reception and lounge area.

Good buffet breakfast and we had a great evening meal.

10 minutes from Taj and 20 mins from Fort Agra.

Very large clean room, comfortable king size bed and powerful hot shower.

Negatives:

Wifi did not work in room (but did work in lounge area).

Pool was out of service. Very annoying as we specifically chose this hotel for outside pool space as a escape from the Agra hustle and bustle.

Not much atmosphere, quite generic.

Overall: This is a very decent clean and modern hotel. Its not an exciting hotel but it ticks all the boxes. Would get an extra star if the pool worked.

This place is very close to the Taj mahal. The rooms are luxurious but the shower tap was a litre difficult to handle in my bathroom. It was perfect in the room my parents were staying. The ac seemed to have been shut off and it was warm at night.
There was a stench from outside that had found its way into both our rooms. Thankfully, it was observed when we were about to check out so we didn't take it too seriously.
The breakfast spread was decent. The dinner buffet was average.

Well, we were there in January, after 20 days of touring around India I thought this would be a good place where to chill. I was wrong...

The F&B Service was extremely poor: too many waiters but we waited 15 minutes before they noticed we wanted to be served.

At the front desk there was a nice guy Who seemed professional so I handed over to him my precious postcards which I collected along my trip in India. He promised eh would take care of them and send them immediately. Now, almost 2 months have gone by and guess what? No sign of postcards! So I wrote to the front desk but they did not bother answering to my several emails.

In one word: do not trust anyone of the staff! You will end up very upset!

We checked early in the morning after arriving on the overnight train from Varanasi. Despite check-in time being 12noon, we were upgraded to a superior room by 9am. Very accommodating. Clean spacious rooms. WIFI signal weak and spotty in the rooms, but strong in the hotel lobby. Would stay here again in the future.

The hotel has lovely, spotless rooms, very well maintained pool, a nice restaurant serving excellent food at reasonable rates and very attentive and helpful staff. The breakfast buffet deserves a special mention as it had a wide variety of indian and english breakfast items. The puris though, should be served hot. The hotel is very close to the Taj Mahal and it's fun to hire a horse cart (tonga) to and from Taj. Thanks to Mr. Ahmad and the reception staff - Sheeba, Faizal and Ashish, we had a lovely stay.By the way, free wi-fi is a big plus.

Room Tip: Most peaceful rooms are on the first floor or the ones overlooking the pool on the second floor.

Had a nice stay at the Retreat. Had a bit of a mixup on registration but Danish sorted it all out for us. All other inquires were looked after really well. The restaurant was good. The hotel is well situated near the Taj Mahal. After we left we realized that we had left one of our iPads in the safe. The safes are small so the only way to get everything in is to push the iPad against the back wall of the safe. When we checked before we left we didn't see it because it is the same colour and size as the inside of the safe.
If any staff member wants to check again and receive a $100 reward we really think it could be still there against the back wall. The manager has the contact information if it is found ( it is password locked so no use to anyone else)
