“Welcoming and lovely”
Reviewed 16 January 2010

Perhaps this hotel doesn't (as others have indicated) really rate as a 5-Star... not being a typical 5-Star hotel kind of gal, I can't speak to that. I can say that I loved my two different stays at the Gateway. The staff was extremely welcoming and accommodating, from the front desk clerks to the housekeeping team, to the security guard at the front door. I found the decor to be quite charming, comfortable, and unique/authentic (no cookie cutter 'boutique hotel' design here). The beds were very comfortable, and the bathrooms very nice. I will say that the food wasn't stunning, though it was better than okay. And filtered ice in the bar was a welcome find. Pool area is lovely, and I wish we'd had more time to enjoy it. At one point, after a hectic day of traveling from Jaipur to Agra, I joked to my friend about moving in to the hotel. Permanently. So I guess you could say I liked it.

Wow! what an experience? We had visited the famous Taj Mahal with all the family mamber in the month of December'09. The stay at the hotel added more fun, enjoyment and excellence in our trip. The service , ambience and comfort was the best. We all had a nice time and would never forget such a trip. I would recommend everyone to visit the hotel.

We came here for our 13 year old's birthday and we had a fantastic stay. The decor is fantastic here, with Mughal style furnishings. The service is excellent, they go out of the way to ensure you have a fantastic time. Our waiter brought out a surprise birthday dinner free of charge and made our day. With Agra being very chaotic, the Gateway gave us a fantastic place to relax. There is in fact good value for money when you convert rupees into dollars and realise that you are in fact paying good money for a five star hotel.

Misled into believing that this is a 5 star hotel by travel agent. This is a Gateway Hotel.

We booked at short notice and were promised rooms with a view of the Taj Mahal which did not happen. The hotel decor looks a bit tired and is in need of a makeover. Apart from this it was a fairly pleasant stay with very friendly staff and despite the tired appearance everything was very clean. The food and beverage selection was good. The Hotel is good value for money and is also ideally situated for visits to Agra Fort and Taj Mahal.

I have to agree with the previous reviewer who basically said this was a nice hotel but not up to American 5 star standards. We spent Christmas eve here and had a nice stay. The entire hotel is adequate but the lobby, buffet restaurant and rooms all need some refurbishing. The outdoor grounds and pool are nicely maintained. The spa and gym are small but are very useable and provide massages and facials for very reasonable prices. The hotel has some nice children's activities like a magic show in the lobby and a puppet show by the pool. The breakfast buffet is quite extensive, with Indian and Western selections as well as freshly made dosas, pancakes and omlettes if you wish. The Christmas dinner was somewhat hokey, with a large buffet with just ok food, and terrible singers/live band. After we left Agra, we stayed at 2 more Taj properties, the Sawai Madhopur Lodge near Ranthambore National Park and Jai Mahal Palace in Jaipur. Both of these properties exuded luxury and high quality service, something this hotel does not. It is strange to me that the Taj group does not have a premier luxury hotel in Agra, the location of the Taj Mahal. We did have lunch at the ITC Mughal hotel and without having seen the rooms, the property and facilities seemed quite modern and top notch. Of course, the average price for that property is about $100 more per night compared to the Gateway. Since we couldn't afford to pay over $700 a night for the ultra luxury Oberoi Amarvillas, we would probably choose the ITC if we had to visit Agra again.
