Awesome place, truly a wonder of the world. Felt heavely to see it along with reflection in its lake.

We chose not to go at dawn, but 10 am and it was fine. As with other landmark tourist monuments in India you are mobbed by hawkers and guides outside, need to be careful to purchase a valid ticket from the ticket counter and you have to negotiate your way from the carpark to the entry via complementary electric shuttle bus - dodging hawkers and guides on the way.

We visited in winter so the day was cool, a bit hazy but sunny. If you chose to not negotiate a guide, or purchase an audio guide there is no interpretation (explanatory signs) so it is worth to pre-read for context.

Way-finding is easy: follow the stream of other tourists and signs directing either expensive foreigner ticketed entry or discounted Indian ticketed entry.

The value of visiting the Taj Mahal in person is getting up close to the inlaid stone, feeling its smooth cool surface. Walking into the mausoleum, with provided shoe covers is similar to walking through churches in Europe: it's a sacred and burial place now trampled by tourists. Appropriately photography is prohibited inside.

If you're a foreigner and want a semi-peaceful experience read up a bit beforehand and walk self-directed, don't acknowledge (at all, not even, "No!") the hawkers outside - they will not persist, and visit in the morning.

Make sure you are there at sunrise, about 30 minutes before the counter opens. One person is standing in line at the ticket corner, the other people stay in line at the entrance gate. This way you are in early and have the best view. The photographers standing at the entrance do have some good ideas for pictures.

We went to see sunrise at the Taj and were the second group to enter the Taj that morning. It was peaceful and serene and more beautiful in real life than all the images seen over the years.
