Very clean and good place to stay if you are going to Taj Mahal. The room that they gave me seems like a bathroom. I think that maybe because in the summer it is very hot. Have a nice garden, and they have a restaurant that you can have breakfast very early in the morning an then go to Taj Mahal to see the sunrise. Also they have laundry service, it takes almost 12 hours to have your clothes back.

Hotel Sheela was the second stop on our North Indian tour. We arrived by taxi from Agra station early evening and true enough the hotel is right next to the Eastern Gate for the Taj Mahal. The entrance area and the long path looked quite nice as did the small restaurant at the back. However, we did not get off to a good start. The room we had reserved was given out already and they wanted the full cost of our stay upfront (which wiped out almost all our cash for that evening). The room we ended up with was dirty, noisy and hot (due to a broken fan). The beds were rock hard and an unpleasant nights sleep was had by the three of us. Thank goodness it made it easier to get up to see the Taj nice and early in the morning. One handy hint is that although the hotel is right next to the Taj, the ticket office is a 15 min walk the other way past the touts and rickshaw drivers. On our second night we were moved to another room which was more comfortable than the one on the first night. We also had nice breakfasts and dinners in the garden area which was lovely and relaxing. If the same effort that was put in to maintaining the garden was put into the rooms this place would be a real gem. Instead while it is cheap, the rest is sadly lacking as it seems they are just happy to take your money safe in the knowledge that you wont be coming back!

Hotel was extremely cheap 1400 rupees for AC room. A huge lock is used to lock your room. The room is a bare bones, no frills kind of room. There was no blankets for the bed. The bathroom was not the cleanest. Hotel needs a complete new overhaul.

Positive thing about the hotel is that it is located a block down from the Eastern Gate. It makes it easy especially if you are doing the Taj Mahal at sunrise (which i would definitely recommend).

Hotel staff were extremely nice and the restaurant was good, not great.

I had no problems with the hotel since we were only there for 1 night.

The location was very nice, its near the Taj but with a nice peaceful garden with lots of other travellers to relax with. Unfortunately, the food was just awful, seriously bad- like they didn't put any effort in whatsoever. A bit like the rest of Agra I guess. The room was ok but we didn't have any hot water, or if we did it was beyond me to figure out how to turn it on. But, it was cheap and a nice atmosphere, so all in all not an awful place, but not spectacular either.

We stayed in about 10 1000-2000 rupee rooms around Rajastan whilst travelling and this was 800 and of a pretty similar standard. People complaining about this must remember that they are renting a room for £11 A NIGHT!!!!!!

Its 100m from the entrance to the Taj (Practically the only thing worse seeing in Agra), the food is better than average and better than averagely priced.

You should go in with your eyes open if you spend 800 rupees a night and not expect the Ritz, but this place is perfectly acceptable. And a lovely peaceful garden to boot.

So, to the people below - stop whinging and spend more on a hotel if your are going to whine about the amenities.

I stayed at Sheela for 2 nights. 2 bad nights, could not move due to my husband’s “Delhi belly”

Arriving early in the morning, had breakfast and waited for the room. I booked Rs800 room. While waiting for my room I saw the staff went in the room after the guest checking out, they were about ten minutes meaning no new sheet or properly cleaning. Lonely Planet should not recommend this hotel at all.

My room #101, in front of the garden.

Location is unbeatable, no view of the Taj though. On the other hand, you can find a lot of hotels along Chowk Kagjiyan, South gate are close to, and with fantastic view of the Taj. Or along the same street with Sheela there are Oberoi 5* (where you can buy entrance ticket at the front desk) and quite a few midrange hotels.

The staff kept sweeping, cleaning around the hotel entrance/ garden that makes the hotel look impressive. I wish they have the same effort for cleaning the room.

As I observed there is not much different between Rs800 or cheaper rooms. The room big enough with basic needs (no soap) mattress is too thin I could feel my ribs......Of course, I didn’t come in with high expectations, but look what I found. That’s the most disgusting washroom I have seen during our two month in India.

Food is ok. The price is not cheaper than the others. If you go to the road along Chowk Kagjiyan, south Gate there are a lot of restaurants with good deals for breakfast, lunch and dinner ( about 40% less than Sheela restaurant)

Front desk staff: some are cranky. The owner, Mr.Ashok Bansal is helpful and nice.

For reference

We stayed at Cottage Yes Please and Hari Piorko (Delhi )Ganpati (Varanasi) Pearl Palace hotel (Jaipur) City heart hotel (Amritsar) Hotel Tibet (Dharmasala) Rugaj Niwas (Jodhpur)

Rain was pouring down when we (3 girls) arrived at this sweet little hotel. The hotel maneger was the typical big man behind the desk, greeting us with one eye on the television :) The room was small but clean with a nice little bathroom and clean sheats. The hotel is about 30 mesters from the East Gate of the Taj Mahal -very good. And about 500 meters from the Taj Mahal tourist office where you get you Taj tickits.
I deffinetly recomend this hotel :)
And the restaurent at the hotel served good continental food :)
