“Nice, basic place to stay with great garden and location”
Reviewed 26 April 2013

I stayed here for 4 nights in october 2010. Booked the room prior to departure, which apparently was a good idea, as I meet a few people who had to look somewhere else, as the hotel was fully booked...
It is not in the upper ranges and the bathroom is basic, with cold water etc. But what I really enjoyed, was the fantastic garden and the perfect location right next to the entrance to the Taj.
Maybe slightly out of this context, but Agra was a dump for me, and had it not been for the Taj, I doubt I would ever go there. And that is where the brilliant garden, with its calm and relaxed atmosphere really showed its value... As a place to retreat from the madness :-)
I had most of my meals in the garden, and I loved it, no stomach issues there, maybe luck, but it seemed just fine for me.
Aircondtion... hehe :-) That was a bit funny; looked like an old car engine ventilator, diesel, full blast through a bale of hay, through the window. But my room had a ventilator in the ceiling, so it kept me fairly cool during the nights...
I would not hesitate to stay there again, keeping in mind that it is NOT upper class 5 star, but basic accommodation right next to the Taj Mahal...

Room Tip: Splash out on the 'expensive' rooms, you're only here for a few nights and they are stil...

As a budget backpacker who has been travelling for 4 weeks through India, I would say this is pretty much representative of a budget room in India (i.e. nothing spectacular).

BUT.... the great part about this property is (1) it's metres away from the East Gate of the Taj (get your tickets the day before and head to the Taj for sunrise - INCREDIBLE), (2) this property has a lovely garden courtyard which allows you to escape from the intensity of the shop and rickshaw owners of Agra.

We made a reservation at Hotel Sheela and they confirmed it all via e mail. Upon arrival after a very long train journey and a taxi ride they said the reservation doesnt actually mean its confirmed. This was approx 12.30pm and they then asked us to wait while they checked. They actually did nothing for 10 minutes then said 'sorry, we have no room'. They then tried to offer a slightly cheaper stay at their other (not as nice) hotel. We refused as they were clearly not telling the truth and would rather our money went elsewhere.
E mails clearly stated the booking was confirmed.

As described and expected, the room and bathroom were basic but clean, with a fan (which only worked noisily at full speed!) Manager and staff were all really friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome. The gardens of the hotel are beautiful, a real oasis away from the hustle and bustle of Agra. Ideally positioned for the wonderful Taj Mahal - 100 meters away. Food was good and cheap.

Room Tip: Try to get a room under the trees in the hot months

Firstly, the positive is the location near the East Gate and the setting around a garden is pleasant.

Now the negatives. We stayed in a Rs600 room for two nights. On arrival the room (and especially the bathroom) was infested with mosquitoes. We swatted around 20 before we could use the room. The bathroom was very damp and unclean. The toilet leaked over the floor when flushed. The bedroom had only been cleaned where visible. We moved the beds to put our mosquito net up and it was filthy behind the furniture and under the beds. Our lonely planet said the rooms here are spotless, do not be fooled! There was an overwhelming smell of sewage in the room to add to the ambience. The fan was actually quite good and quiet but the power was off most of the night so it was useless. Finally, there are swarms of mosquitoes outside the room waiting to come in when the door is opened.

Bearable (just) if you are only stopping briefly but it's clear guide book endorsements have made them VERY complacent. I would avoid Sheela if you can so they are forced to clean up their act.

We stayed at Hotel Sheela for 2 nights and can only say positive things. The first thing that was a highlight for me was that because it was a stones throw away from the East Gate of the Taj Mahal, no traffic is allowed within 500m so it is very calm and quiet, a nice break from the busy roads of India. The room we had was very basic (but clean). I saw 2 other rooms and these were slightly nicer, but for a price of Rs 800 a night you cannot complain. The hotel staff are nice and even though checkout is at 10am, they store you're bags there free of charge all day (and let you use the toilet and shower). The tickets for the Taj are a short walk up the road. We bought these the day before and was around a 15 minute walk though you can get a horse and cart there or for Rs 5 an electric golf cart. Go the to Taj plaza for a drink or dinner on the rooftop restaurant (next door to the more expensive oberoi). Fantastic place to see the sunset over the Taj Mahal - but take insect repellent. The restaurant opposite hotel Sheela 'the family restaurant' has some delicious food at a very reasonable price. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Agra.

After a couple of days in New Delhi, the quiet of Hotel Sheela was very welcome. The location is great, and it's very easy to find. The restaurant food is not the best, but it's convenient and the atmosphere is lovely. The showers were cold, but this is India, so what can we expect? Overall this is a nice budget option.
