Well..we just returned from a days stay at Grand Hotel Agra and then we proceeded to Jaipur. Our experience was a bit of a let down.

The room was very ordinary. It was not dusted and the floor was also dirty. Room service was quite unprofessional.

We had to make a lot of noise to get things in order in the room.

and then,,,there was a big party right below our room which kept us awake till 1am !!

Next morning we gave all the feedback to Mr Dang, who is the owner of the property...but then we spoilt our peace and holiday as well!!

BETTR TO AVOID THIS HOTEL IN AGRA FOR THE PRICE THEY CHARGE !!

TAKE CARE !!

Booking more than a month in advance, upon arrival, what I heard is "we are overbooked so need to shift you to other hotel" !! That was the height of their management. Later upon calling my travel agent, the things sorted out but it took more than 1.5 hours hanging with luggage. We booked for 3 people in a room and rates quoted for 3rd bed which never arrived upon asking fro 2 consecutive nights. So upon checkout, this became a point of debate and the manager sent for the staff and asking me whom I spoke to on phone regarding this ? Do I suppose to ask for name of the staff and remember them just in case if I would like to complaint about them ??? Morning breakfast was late for all 2 days which made my other travel arrangement to alter. Restaurant is not clean and management very poor. Besides, they rented the space to a wedding and some other party arrangements which made the whole place very noisy till late night and due to loud music, door and windows frames were shaking ( and inside the room we were ). So avoid this hotel by all means.

- Rooms were not ready on time
- We had to make few calls asking for basics like towels, soaps and shampoo
- Bedsheets looked dirty and had hair on them
- Restaurant buffet overpriced. Dirty plates. Table cloths filthy with previous night's stuff when we went back for breakfast. Food tasted ok, though oily
- Zero aesthetic sense in building or in room. Whoever wrote "colonial architecture" either lied or was joking. Garden not more than grass.

We checked into the Grand Hotel for 1 night, just so we could see the Taj at sunrise the next day. As many people have said the hotel is rather large and it seemed like there were not many people staying there. We paid 3500 INR and an extra bed fee because there were 3 of us. The rooms were pretty good, rather large compared to other hotels we stayed in. I've heard that hotels are expensive in Agra, so I think this one has a good deal. But for India we paid less in other places and got better quality. We had a free breakfast buffet, which was mainly Indian style. After seeing the Taj at sunrise we came back to the hotel to eat breakfast and check out to go see the Red Fort.

The hotel is very large, like another review said, I'm sure in its day it was very grand. There was not really any other guests to speak of that we saw whilst there. We sat in the restuarant for about 1 and a half hours and we were the only ones in there minus 3 other tourists that came in later just before we left.

Word of advice, if you come in later they won't let you order from the menu, buffet only. We ordered from the menu and despite what other reveiws say, the food was quite sufficent. Not the best, but not appaulingly bad or anything. It is better than what you will find in the UK and even if pricey for India, cheap compared to elsewhere.
For 2 curries, 2 rice, 2 paratha, popud, beer, water and sweets it was about £15.00.
We however only ordered veg as he didn't want to risk meat in such a quiet hotel so perhaps that is why other reveiws rate the food as not so good. Perhaps veg is the way to go in this hotel? I will recommend the dal makhini, it was good!

I think the lack of guests is the reason for the slight feeling of neglect. I don't think there is enough money to re-do the hotel to the standards they may like.

The bedroom and bathroom were exceptionally large and the bedding was clean. The walls had slight stains and marks, admitedly slightly grubby apperance. But not un-liveable as the bed etc: was clean and again, large and comfortable. The air con is very good which you don't always experience in low cost, older hotels. So good for those hot nights if you need it.

There were many staff, with not much to do. It took two to check us in, and then a further two to take us to our room. Have lots of 10 rupees available as tips. I know its not ideal having to keep tipping and some really appose doing so, but you can tell these people have nothing else to do, are not well paid and haven't been well tipped in years. (Most of the guests are Indian locals there for a function etc: who won't tip)
It doesnt really cost you the earth, at 10 rupees I think that is around 10p and the guy who carried our luggage looked so happy, I felt guilty. We however are a bit lenient with the tipping, giving too much etc: but it can make all the difference to thier lives whilst not costing much for westerners at all.
But that's my opinion, so either do or don't, it's down to the individual. Just thought I would pre-warn that there are a lot of staff who will be trying to help around the hotel trying to gain a tip.

All in all, I would go back. It was a bit loud the evening of our stay as there was some indian reception going on the opposite site of the yard, but that's just india in all fairness.

Taj Mahal tip, if you are planning to do red fort etc: in Agra and the other sites, go to the Taj Mahal first as on the ticket there are 5 seperate tabs included in the price of the ticket which obtain entry to the other attractions. We didn't know this and went to the Red Fort first. Im not sure exactly which attractions are on the stub, but its worth going there first and then seeing what others you want to visit with the included cost!

Pluses:
Clean room, sufficient parking space.

Minuses:

- Dismal view out of the window.

- Miserable food - We ordered Hara Kebab which was supposed to be stuffed with spinach. Instead of spinach, it came with potato with added green colour.

- Prize : Steep

- Staff: almost absent

The amenities fail to justify the price. In short, not value for money.
