Agra was my last stop of my Delhi-Jaipur-Agra trip. I visited Agra from 18-20 Oct 2013. The hotel is located on a calm & quiet road and just 10 mins by walk from the Taj east gate. But the main problem of the hotel is the service, which is lax to say the least. You have to ask repeatedly for towels & water. The economy rooms are very small. The hotel has both positive & negatives & probably at equal proportions. But I will still recommend the hotel for the excellent location.
Plz plz bargain hard for everything on the streets of Agra. Otherwise you will be duped. In this regard the fixed priced shops are worse. Always quote 60% of the price they are asking for.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second floor are good. There is a small sitting area from where the view of The Taj is...

Stayed there for a night and that's it no more..
It is very close to one of the gates (don't remember which one) and economical. Staff is helpful..
But the water is probably directly from the sea! though there is none nearby. It is very very salty!

We chose this hotel based on reviews and recommendations from trip advisor, agoda and Lonely Planet as well as the closeness to the Taj Mahal. We have travelled around Vietnam and Thailand staying in budget accommodation and we were appalled at the standard this hotel is in for what it's rates are.
We paid £12.84 per night on 18th October 2013. It is not worth £5. The double bed is two small singles pushed together, leaving a gap in the middle. The bed sheets look very dirty and the "blanket" was a filthy scratchy rug. No towels provided. Cockroaches and ants on the floor (dead and alive). Bathroom grubby, smelly with rust stains running down walls. We paid extra for air con which turned off twice in the middle of the night for 20 minutes at a time meaning a very interrupted nights sleep. We used our own towels as blankets. Reception told us we had to ask 20 minutes before if we wanted hot water so we didn't bother based on previous reviews. You can see the Taj from the roof and walk to the East gate in 10 minutes but in my opinion this is absolutely not a good enough reason to stay here even if like us it is only for one night.

Room Tip: Just don't stay here go somewhere else even the most expensive room is disgusting.

Taj Plaza Hotel is absolutely fine, we were concerned with booking after reading some negative comments, but decided to stay because of location and Taj view. View was fantastic, location really easy. We just don't understand why people have made the negative comments.
The room was clean and comfortable. We were in Agra for one night only, and unfortunately became ill due to food or drink taken at another establishment. The staff at Taj Plaza were only too obliging and helpful, even offering us free use of a room to rest in after we had checked out, whilst waiting for train. All good atvTaj Plaza, lovely day on reception, Thankyou. Sherryl and Pat

Room Tip: Ask for Taj View room.

The hotel is probably the cheapest available option in terms of proximity to Taj Mahal (500m). I got a deluxe double room in 375 INR. The room had twin bed, TV and basic furniture. To my surprise the deluxe room had a cooler though it was not listed in the facilities. Both the room and the toilet were spacious and clean. They also have a roof top restaurant (visit highly recommended) providing view of the Taj and great food. I had north Indian meal, which had homemade taste and cost slightly more than my room cost. Note: Restaurant accepts only cash.
Hotel staff is helpful and can assist in the general queries you have as a tourist. Transport in form of auto, tonga and cycle rickshaw is available right outside.

Negatives:
They are not so good at service. I checked in at 4 PM and had called the hotel before arrival; still my room had no linen and towels. I was provided with dirty towels on request.
The reception is pretty strict with its check-in policies and does not care to inform those policies even if you call them in advance. Do carry a photo and address proof of all the guests else you will have to spend half an hour at reception till you dig out one from your emails.
They do not have an elevator.

Room Tip: Look out for rooms on the eastern side (at upper floors) if you want a view of Taj Mahal from your r...

Unfortunately our Rickshaw walla had no clue about this place so we had a lot of trouble locating the hotel. After much trouble as we felt relieved we were asked to produce our address proofs, usually hotels would accept our pancards and be happy with it but they insisted on both of us producing our address proof. My husband had his handy but I had to dig mine out of my laptop. All the while I was worried that we might have to turn back and would loose money. Thankfully the lady at the reception found a pendrive so that she could print it. We do understand that they have to follow rules but seriously could we have atleast been shown our rooms!!
With this disappointment on our minds we went upto our room on second floor. I don't usually require hot water so can not comment on availability but we were happy to find clean room and bathroom. Now it was not a sparkly room the fixtures were old but the upkeep was decent. You can't expect much at the price we paid.
The linen was clean but still had a few stains. We also found quite a few black ants crawling on our bed the next day. Still it was a good accommodation.
The winning point of the hotel is its location-around 600m from taj and an awesome view from its roof top. We had a chowmein after we had just arrived and did not find it good but our lunch the next day was quite good and decently priced though you can definitely find cheaper places nearby but the view and breeze was worth it along with tasty food.

They also serve Beer but that's it for liquor, I can't tell you if they actually manage to keep it chilled.

I would recommend this hotel for a cheap clean stay close to taj and if you do book it do spend time on the roof top.
