“A terrible experience!!!”
Reviewed 6 April 2009

My wife and I stayed at the Maya following a 'recommendation' in the Footprint guide book to India. We think that recommendation ought to be revised! We stayed for two nights. The room was filthy; the bed sheets weren't clean, nor were the towels and the 'en-suite' bathroom was at best shabby, and at worst insanitary. Furthermore, the hotel's electricity supply was unpredictable causing our sleep to be disturbed either from humidity, or by the A/C unit's frequent and loud clicking on and off. Our room was also just down the corridor from the hotel's kitchen, and this meant the room was filled with foul (not fragrant) smells. In short, our stay was a terrible experience!!!

It's a stone's throw from the West Gate of the Taj Mahal and on the cusp of the buzzing alleyways of the Taj Gahj district. It's a good value backpacket hotel run by lovely owners and a friendly, efficient staff. It's clean and cared for though showing its age a bit (aren't we all?). It has a great restaurant (choice of outside terrace or inside seating) with an extensive, reasonably priced menu. As a co-reveiwer points out, it ain't the Hilton but it doesn't pretend to be. We called the day before to book and Dinesh was efficient and welcoming. Our room was INR1000 including tax and, compared to other places around the Taj Gahj we looked into, we believe this represented great value. The rooms were sparse but clean. Ours lacked a window and was a bit musty but facilities were all spotless and hygenic. Owners Raju & Evaa were hospitable in every way, organising activities, providing advice and sharing their wealth amongst others. I can't fault their style! If you get the chance, ask Evaa about doing a cooking class with Manu. It was an unforgettable and rewarding experience for us! The Maya gets our stamp of approval, our recommendation and our future custom if luck brings us back to Agra.

We have travelled in India before, so have an understanding that things are not always how one would like it to be. Visiting the Taj Mahal was our main reason for coming to Agra. In a huge frenetic city as Agra is, the Maya is a calm oasis of needed help, quiet rest, rejuvinating comfortable beds, with good soft pillows, excellent food, very helpfull staff. Our room had the wonderfull marble bed, which sounds strange, but is very exotic. Totally reccomend the Maya. Raju, the boss man is also very friendly and helpful, always happy to asnswer any enquiries. We felt completely safe and well taken care of here. The value for our Euro was excellent. Being so close to the Taj, and the lovely back street village activity was also a bonus. Absolutely no problems here and we are very pleased with our choice. We have a very happy memory of the three days in Agra, and staying at Maya Hotel was a big part of that enjoyment.

This hotel is inexpensive and well located and the food in the restaurant is really good. However, the bathrooms are squat, which I did not realize in advance, and the comforter and mattress feel damp and musty. The lack of a top sheet made me feel like running away. Overall, the place is depressing, dark, and the staff smoke in the hallway.

after checking a few hotels in the area we have chosen this one since it looked ok for the price. staff are friendly. room cleanness is ok. restaurant kitchen is visible which made us comfortable to eat there. the only problem we had is that we were given a room with humidity. the sheets and matress were kinda wet. however after telling the staff got them replaced. so if you intend to stay there put your hand on the matress to check if its humid!

  • Liked — open kitchen restaurant
  • Disliked — humidity in our room(they arent all humid though)

This is a great place to stay in Agra. The beds were comfortable and the warm duvets were very welcome after spending a freezing few days in Delhi. The staff were incredibly helpful and the place is run with great efficiency. The restaurant also serves good food.

Maya Hotel & Restaurant is truly the best place to stay if you are going to Agra. It is located less than five minutes walk to the Taj Mahal and has a laid-back, easy-going character. The staff are really helpful and friendly and the beds there were perhaps the most comfortable ones that I slept on the entire time I was in India.
