we were there at he end of januari and the room was very cold and damp. there were not enough blankets but after a shivering night we requested and got more blankets.

We stayed at the Tourist Rest House for 2 nights. We booked a 650 room in advance - all good. The room was really clean, fairly new paint, working bathroom with hot water, but it was very very damp and cold. One of the managers/ reception guys was lovely and really helpful, the other was rude and unhelpful. It was also a bit of a mission to get towels when we first arrived.

After two nights white mold have sprouted from the walls close to the bed and everything just felt wet. We also had mice in our room, which became extra energetic on our second night and we woke up to a room full of mouse poo! I mentioned this to one of the managers who told me that it must have come from outside - no apology or anything, I suggested that it wasn't from the 'outside' as it was there for 2 nights. I imagine the next person in room 115 will find the same...

The hotel has a nice court yard in the middle. The food is average. Ok taste wise but nothing great, over priced and small portions.

The rooms are quite noisy as they're next to the court yard. The staff shout to each other and talk loudly late at night and early in the morning. On the second morning I got up to ask the staff to be quiet. I followed them to the reception area to ask them if they could keep it down, the manager told me that it was not them, even though I had seen the conversation and followed them across the court yard. Again, no apology.

We had a motorcycle with us and we were able to park it inside the hotel (a couple of steps to get up but doable) behind a secure gate.

Over all it was an average place to stay, not the worst by far, but also not great for 650.

Room Tip: I think the rooms on the first and second floor are probably less damp and a bit more airy.

When experiencing the scrum that is Agra, this property is an OK stop over.

Plus points are:

* met from the train and taken back to hotel by friendly tuk-tuk driver
* nice warm welcome
* clean room
* low cost (particularly for Agra)
* Safe, trustworthy environment

Less positive points were:

* having picked us up our tuk-tuk driver relentlessly tried to sell us a "tour", and was sullen when we declined
* the room was cold and there was a lot of noise from the courtyard at night
* room was basic in the extreme

Our stay in the Tourist Rest House in Agra was good. They have a nice courtyard where it's great to sit outside (we had to sit next to the little fire, because it was cold), where meeting other people is really easy. The rooms, were spaceous and clean, as was the bathroom (with a hot shower). The staff was really helpful with booking some train tickets for us. The location is a bit away from the nice and vibrant streets of Agra, but for intance the Agra Fort is within 15 minutes walking distance. Nearby there is not much nice restaurants, therefore we appreciated the good cuisine that was part of the hotel. Overall, the room was nice, but slightly overpriced and the Tourist Rest House's location could be better.

This hotel gives a good first impression. They provide free pick up from the train station, which is very convenient. You may book a tour with the rickshaw driver if you wish, but there was absolutely no pressure from hotel staff to do so.They have an absolutely lovely central courtyard, with fairy lights strung about over the tree branches to give a very pleasant atmosphere in the evening. Menu seemed a tad expensive, however, i soon discovered that nearly every restaurant in Agra is so the food prices seemed fairly standard. The room, upon our first inspection, seemed clean and well appointed. However, we were only in the room a short while before discovering some problems; bathroom door was warped and would not close properly, ALL of the pipes/ taps in the bathroom leaked, meaning that we were disturbed in the night by dripping water, and the floor was constantly flooded and required us to wear our shoes into the bathroom (this also meant that the floors got very muddy), and there was an open grate in our bathroom wall to the courtyard area, meaning that we were disturbed by noises from outside our bedroom. Finally, much to my distaste, the blankets absolutely reeked! This was bad enough to wake me up in the night, and keep me awake. My boyfriend asked for another at the reception and was told to collect a new one himself. On inspection of the available blankets, however, he ascertained that ours was actually the least smelly. This really lowers my impression of the place, which otherwise would have gotten a very good review from me.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have an open grate into the courtyard; select one without for a more peaceful stay...

This hotel is good value for money (price of the most expensive room in the highest season between xmas and new year: 1200rs = 19usd = 14eur): It is a nice building with a green courtyard in the center and the basic rooms arranged around. Our room was ok, clean and quiet, the bathroom was ok as well with good water preasure and hot water.

All staff are very nice and very funny. They make me smile and laugh all the time.

Breakfast (as well as snaks and lunch) is taken in the courtyard. Differently from the cleanliness of the rooms, we found the tables in the courtyard always dirty: they never clean up a table when a guest finishes and leaves it. And upon requesting our table to be cleaned, they did so with a cloth which had not seen fresh water and soap for days. The food was not the best either, we ended up going elsewhere for dinner. This is a pitty -- this beautiful green courtyard has the potential to become a real added value to the hotel: a good and clean cafeteria/restaurant. Here I seee room for improvement (with very little investment).

Just walking out of the hotel, the neighbourhood is dirty and noisy -- but this is Agra. I found that dirt and noise are a generalised emblem of this city, even one meter behind the Taj Mahal. So this is not a minus point for the Rest House. You need transport (tuctuc) to the sightseeings (Agra Fort, Taj Mahal) - but they are so cheap and ubiquitous that this does not matter.

All in all: we recommend this stay as good value for money with nice staff, and basic yet clean and quiet rooms around a green courtyard.
