“Lovely Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2012

Varanasi is chaotic, but once in this hotel there is calm. We had a lovely room which overlooked the river and a lovely enclosed veranda where we had breakfast each morning.
The room was a good size and the bed very comfortable, but I think it was the worst shower we had in India. No great problem. This hotel is not for anyone with mobility difficulties. One has to climb virtually a ladder to get to reception from the street and there are no lifts in the hotel. This is not a criticism of the hotel but something people need to be aware of when thinking about staying here. There is a lovely terrace and the owner is a keen gardener. The were many dahlias in pots when we stayed and this was a beautiful sight after a day walking around Varanasi.
We didn't eat evening meals at the hotel preferring to go to local restaurants which were much more reasonably priced. It is a strictly vegetarian hotel and no alcohol. If that worries you you need to go to another hotel. I dont think there is a better hotel that close to the Ganges.
Was a lovely peaceful stay in a chaotic city.

Room Tip: get a room that overlooks the river

The hotel is an old (100 +/- years) converted, rich merchant's mansion located above the Asi Ghat at the south end of the ghats. The merchant in his day was a close associate of the local maharaja. The ambience is truly Indian and thus adds to ones travel experience. There are Indian antiques throughout and the intiiment dinning room (about 10 tables) has a unique style complete with a false balcony. For breakfast there is a very lovely terrace overlooking the Ganges River whose bank is directly across from the hotel. This setting, amongst many flower pots and bushes ,is a great way to start the day. A number of rooms open out on this truly lovely scene. The only draw back is the small size of the rooms but for me it is worth it to avoid the sterele, all-over- the- world sameness of modern hotels.

The hotel is really nice we enjoyed our stay overall very much

Location: we enjoyed being outside of the "center city" at the end of the Gaths. Along the main road you can find lots of small shops.

Hotel: it is very clean and the room we had was very nice. We could see the Ganga from the hotel terrasse and indoor kind of living room.

Service: the service is ok, but very very slow. The food is nice, only vegeterian, even onions or garlic is not cooked (did not understand why). Diner is at a mandatory time (8pm) and you dine along with all the other guests at the same table. Can be really nice depending on your table companion. Breakfast is served on the terrasse. Price/quality wise it's very nice.

Yes there are a couple of rooms with views and large windows however we were allocated a very small room with a view over the local dump. Our booking turned out not to be booked at all and they didn't even know we were coming. Probably because they didn't read their email!. Toilet was dirty and the wall between our room next door room was short of the ceiling by about 50cm allowing us to even a whispered conversation. Yes the management were reasonably pleasant but no there is no yoga on the rooftop even if they say there is. Clearly no one turns up to take the class. For India very overpriced but close to Uhm cafe and Open hand cafe and shop which are a welcome reprieve in this crazy place.

Room Tip: you can ask for a room in the rear of the hotel with a balcony and ganga view but don't be surpr...

Beautiful room, terrace with postcard view of the Ganges, gracious, friendly staff and an ideal location (right on Assi Ghat - not too hectic but plenty of atmostphere) - I highly recommend the Hotel Ganges View. Walk along the river and then get lost in the old city (crowded, dusty, disorienting) and then, exhausted, have an oasis of peace to return to. Note: some reviews say this place is overpriced. I know I couldn't afford such a beautiful room in the states or Europe so I considered it a pretty good deal.

Hotel Ganges view is overpriced and whilst it is right on Assi Ghat I found it to be too far away from the main action of the other ghats. The rooms are spacious and very clean however I found the staff not that friendly especially when I asked for a taxi to the airport and they didn't book it until I was ready to leave and thus I almost missed my flight. When the car finally arrived the manager didn't even say "goodbye" or "thankyou"
