“A MUST DO while in India”
Reviewed 31 May 2014

Would definitely recommend a full day in Varanasi to see the Ganges... do a morning boat tour and you'll see people bathing, praying, doing their yoga, washing their clothes... and then do an evening boat tour to attend the fire prayer, put a candle on the Ganges & immerse in the Hindu spirituality... Everywhere you look is amazement, the ghats are beautiful... it's a heaven for photographers...
Don't miss it!

“Truly 'Spectacular' Ganges”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

The Ganges is the one of the main attraction in this city of lights. With over 50 ghats stretching over the city, its the first destination for tourists. It's said "Watch the Sunrise in Benaras and Sunset in Lucknow." So there's no chance missing on the Sunrise from Assi or Dashaswamedh Ghat. But make sure to hire a boat and take a ride and see the panoramic view of all the ghats illuminated by the Sun. The boat charges about 200Rs from Kedar Ghat to Dashaswamedh. And walking along the ghats is a must !

I would believe that many years ago, this historic place provided many life-aiding properties to the local people. Sadly, it appears that the local people are giving back much too much to the Ganges. I was horrified at the amount of waste, chemicals, body fluids from both animals and humans, and general toxic run-off that was entering this water. As century old traditions are now carried out in what must now be a toxic environment, I fear for the health and welfare of all those "living" off the Ganges.

“It's a river.....!”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

If it wasn't for the fact that we visited at dusk to watch the he sun set over Taj Mahal on the other side, I wouldn't have bothered! The 'gardens' we walked though were sparse, the backside was over a fence where locals walked by with children and baby goats, expecting handouts for looking cute! A view of a cremation area just down stream was a little disconcerting, smoke plumes from the days events drifted off leaving an eerie mist. Mozzies abound, so spray well before you go.
