The river is dirty and toxic but walking the ghats and boating for sunrise and the sunset ceremony are experiences one should take advantage of. It is a different way of life. Cremation, bathing, washing clothes and swimming are all shared with the animals who come to cool off, clean off and drink. It is all of India in one place.

Amazing feeling when u see entire ghat and all small - small
on going routine n spiritual activity on ghat and at bank of river.
visiting opp. side of river will be most charming place for having
holy bath and spending peaceful time. people generally never
take chance to reach opp. part of Varanasi where there is just
soils but sometimes u will be lucky to find prayer process of AGHORIS.

early evening like 6 pm ride will gives you amazing eternity era in gaga river..

“Not to be missed!!!!”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

An early morning (0430hrs) pickup got us to to the Ganges and on a little boat at 0500hrs for the sun rise. Well worth the effort to get there before the river gets crowded with other tourists and you can get some great pics of the colours of Varanasi.
Be prepared for the burning of the bodies on the side of the river. It is so strange to see the whole circle of life happening in that river...
An evening boat trip is also worth doing to see the completion of the day and the ceremony.

“Simply fascinating”

Varanasi is sensory overload with sights, smells, emotions, poverty, spirituality, . . . We took a morning boat ride that offered breathtaking vistas of the city and its ghats. I wouldn't pass up that opportunity. During the day we walked the alley ways with a guide from Varanasi Walks and in the evening we attended the ceremony on the riverbank (get a seat up above on one of the balconies for a wonderful view and photos). Varanasi and the Ganga was the highlight of our trip.
