After our Buddhist pilgrimage, GeTS tour took us to the Ganges river.
The hundred and more ghats on the river are the main attraction for visitors. We sat off to visit them at first light before sunrise, around 5 am.
When we reach the river, we saw many hindu pilgrims already bathing in the sacred Ganges. Our tour guide told us that he bathes in the river every morning and it is indeed refreshing. When we touch the water, it was chillingly cold. We shudder at the thought of taking a dip at such an early hour.
Our tour guide hired 2 boats for the four of us. We went upstream towards Harishchandra Chat.
When we started , it was dawn and still dark. We took photos along the way. We were told that photography is not permitted at the burning ghats where bodies are being cremated .
Before long, we saw the rising of the sun from the horizon. Simply captivating.
That evening at sunset we went for a river boat ride again. We saw many young boys and girls carrying baskets of lamps for sale. We bought some lamps and then sat silently on the boat , watching the lamps floated on the river.
We also saw the praying ceremony performed by the Brahmins in honour of the Ganges river. We were told that this praying is done every night.
We recommend that you go for your tour with GeTS .
