One of the highlights of my 10-month stay in India - this may have been my favorite attraction in the whole of the country. The river by day is beautiful, but it is best to go during early morning and late at night. In the early mornings, you'll see devotees bathing themselves in the water. A really powerful sight as the sun rises over the river. The most incredible experience, though, is the burning ghat by night. A rather eerie feeling falls over the river as families burn the remains of their loved ones, but it is terrifyingly beautiful. An absolute must.
River boats are about 200 rupees and while on the river, you can buy individual candles to burn and release into the water. A really touching way to become part of the ritual.
