As a luxury travel writer, I look for the best hotels in each city. For Varanasi I selected this hotel based on the ratings and reviews. For the full review with pictures, check my website.

Stay here if you are looking to get out of the chaos and ... "unpleasantness" of the riverside. Its in a quiet part of town, but offers easy access by taxi or rickshaw to the center.

The rooms of the hotel are the main attraction. This new hotel offers clean, modern, and spacious rooms and suites. The bathrooms look great too with their sleek marble tiles.

Service is friendly and aims to be at the 4-5 star quality level, though not all staff are proficient in English.

Don't hesitate to stay here if visiting Varanasi.

Room Tip: If you want to splurge a bit, the Executive suites are really nice and spacious.

My wife and I stayed 2 nights here on a visit to the Ghats and Sarnath. Most of our trip we had stayed in higher end properties (Leela Palace, Delhi, and various Taj properties). Rivatas is trying to be in that class, and in some respects they succeed. The rooms are clean and well appointed (even an iron and board). The breakfast buffet was very good - a great selection of western and Indian dishes.

There is no health club as in "exercise facility". What they call a "health club" is a spa connected to the hotel and operated independently. My wife said it was not clean.

The staff tries. They are polite, but communication skills are lacking. If you do have a question (not even a problem), you could find yourself struggling to find someone who can comprehend English (not just speak common phrases and say "Thank You").

The most interesting part of the visit was the unexpected New Year's Eve party for what seemed like many of the guests (we were not part of a group). The food at that event was not good - and I actually found a small steel bolt in one of the meat dishes. I'd stick with vegetarian in the future :).

There are two primary reactions from the casual visitor to Varanasi. Some understand the all encompassing significance of the place to Hindu worshippers and appreciate their deep, abiding reverence to their faith while others can't wait to escape the frightful squalor and poor infrastructure of the town. For the latter Rivatas offers a good respite but carries the penalty of being an uncomfortable ride away from the main attraction offering a very comfortable yet sterile experience. The options for Westeners are limited it seems and many places on the riverbanks of the Ganges are not suitable for the unenlightened like me. If you want to see this powerful centre of Hindu culture and religion and visit nearby Sanath (a very important place for Bhuddists), yet not have to mix it too much with the ugly bits then Rivitas is a reasonable option with all the attributes mentioned by other commentators on this website. If the main attraction is what you came for and nothing much else matters, then choose to stay on or nearby the Ghats for an authentic experience, but be warned and brace yourself for shockingly filthy!

It is a new, clean hotel. Rooms are spacious. The restaurant service is excellent because of the friendliness of the staff and the variety offered for breakfast, this service is until 10 am you can enjoy it after watch sunrise on the Ganges river. After a long trip you can take a good massage.

This is a very odd feeling hotel. It does not seem to have an identity. The public spaces are not comfortable, nor peaceful. The lounge is under construction and there were uncontrolled children running around the main restaurant on all four occasions that I had to eat there. There was no security chain, nor deadbolt on the door to room 1116, and one could assume that all rooms are fitted the same. Additionally, one could hear the water draining clearly through the pipes from the rooms upstairs and adjacent. The sound was so loud that one would think the drain in their own room was backing up. The white towels were a dingy shade of grey, and the complimentary wifi is not complimentary at all. Again, this places touts a lot, but does not live up to its goals.

Room Tip: Request a higher floor, not along the side street.

A very nice property to stay, to eat, to enjoy. Lobby's ambience is very nice, rooms are quite nice, having two restaurants with good food ans professional staff. The hotel shares its swimming pool with Ideal Towers, another property by Ideal adjacent to Rivatas. Overall experience was very very good. The property has all modern amenities with a great look.

I loved it. :)
