“Buddhist focal point”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 May 2014

The most important monument in Sarnath. You must pay this place a visit if you are spending any time in nearby Varanasi. This stumpy stupa marks the exact spot where Buddha made his first sermon. Set in lovely tranquil gardens, you will see many devout Buddhist strolling about paying their respects. The stupa is said to contain Buddha relics. If you look closely you can see how much work has gone into the carvings around its base. Floral designs mixed in with the swastika and covered in gold leaf in places.

“Good to Visit If in Area”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2014

Located by the side of the main temple park in Sarnath. Good to see if in area but not worth making a detour to visit if you have been to Asian bhuddist temples and stupas as despite this being one of Buddhism's holiest sites, the temples are fairly new and the site lacks the historical charm and serene environment present at Asiabn temples, even though Sarnath is positively serene compared to Varanesi!

Note that like the main temple it is closed from 11:30-1:30 PM when the monks have their main meal of the day. You can still see the stupa from outside during these hours but can't go inside. The nearby museum stays open and only costs 5 rupees to visit.

“Tread in Buddha's footsteps”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 February 2014

What a priveledge to think such a holy man walked these grounds. Relics are left inside, but not visible, nevertheless the whole place whispered "serenity". Just what you you need after "escaping" Varanasi for a blissful few hours.
