“Gulu the finder of things.....”

I have stayed at this hotel twice now and it really is a great spot to be in once in Varanasi. Everything is close by, you walk everywhere on the Ghats, food is good at Rooftop Restaurant, but the best thing about the hotel is a young lad called Gulu who helped me find just about everything that i wanted on my first trip when i travelled alone. This time he was there, and i was really happy to see him must say, we arrived in rain and cold from the hot south, he found us socks, and hats and just everything we were looking for. He really is a credit to the hotel, and sure he makes his cut, but he also made our lives a whole lot easier. You must however ask for a river facing rooms the others are dreary. All the staff this time around were a lot friendlier than the previous time i went, and really make an effort to make things easier for you but he gets a 5 star rating.

Room Tip: Ask for river facing, also the hotel has three flights and the stairs are steep and many, so if you...

great location on the ghat. this hotel has one of the better restaurants in varanasi, the dolphin restaurant on the rooftop. rooms are very average with steep staircases. the entrie bathroom gets wet after a shower. we were lucky to get rooms facing the river. wifi is available in the lobby. we found one of the front office people less than honest with us when we tried to call our driver. he simply pretended to dial his number and had his finger on the cradle which we pointed out to him. this was so that we dont contact our driver and use the hotels guide and drivers. otherwise the hotel is an average place conveniently located on the ghat.

It's a shame this hotel's rooms, service and ambience aren't as good as it's location, which is unbeatable. We got a good arrival pick up from the train station, and were very glad of it. (The lad responsible was not pushy and later acted as our guide on the ghats, where he did a reasonable job but also misinformed us on a couple of key matters). Arrival at the hotel felt right, but the reception flatters to deceive. When our room was ready (we checked in early and, credit to the hotel, were not charged extra) some flowers were dumped unceremoniously round our necks - a nice gesture the point of which was completely lost in the delivery - and we were shown to the room. It was one of the 'cheaper' ones - no view, $55 up front, non-refundable - and not particularly pleasant. Characterless and a bit cell-like. No charm. We felt the bedsheets had been occupied by the previous guests and the young lad charged with responding to our request to change them huffed and puffed his way through the exercise as though clean sheets was an unreasonable request. The bathroom was just functional but pretty uninviting. I didn't even bother to use it on the second day - you'd have to leave it a lot longer than that between showers to stand out in Varanasi. The rooftop Dolphin bar has a stunning view over the river, and a reasonable menu, including excellent lassis. Beer is a whopping 250 rupees but at least it's available. Service is patchy, with tips as ever a problem. Nothing said, just an expectation, and even the with-holding of a small amount of change as though it doesn't matter. As a result I left no tips at all at the hotel, in spite of the sudden burst of super-friendly smiles when we were on our way out the door (although the boy that dragged our bags through the streets and found a taxi was excellent and did get one). Overall this is a hotel I was glad to leave, although I don't regret booking it - you pay for the location and the rooftop bar. Don't expect anything else.

Room Tip: More expensive rooms have views over the river, but this is not a hotel that you stay at for the roo...

Rashmi is right on the Ganges and near all the important ghats (5 mins from the River Ceremony held every night). The rooftop restaurant has stunning views, serves good food and you can get a beer. Breakfast is limited.
We had a room with a river view but had to bargain hard to get it (expect a hard sell). Rooms need a refurb for the price, and as another reviewer has noted, the bathrooms can be tiny. Ours backed on to next door's bathroom and at times you felt like you were sharing the same room. Make sure you have earplugs. On the other hand rooms were spotless!
We have been in India for 5 weeks now so don't expect perfection, but we were paying for the iconic view.

The Rashmi Guest House unquestionably is beautifully located, overlooking the Ganges. The welcome with a flower garland was very pleasant, and our room was in a prime spot, but for the price ("super deluxe" room) the amenities were a bit shabby -- missing lightbulbs or lights not working at all, no hot water when we wanted to take showers, very shaky internet access.

However, the rooftop restaurant is excellent, and the staff are generally helpful, although they did not always respond to our requests. Our guide, Molu, was very kind and helpful, and took us along the ghats, to see an evening puja, and to buy silks. As always when traveling in India -- and especially Varanasi -- try to be aware of the prices of things so that you don't get ripped off.

On our last day, we were escorted by three porters from the guest house to get a car to the airport, but due to a festival in town, it took almost an hour to get to the car. Two of the three boys disappeared in the confusion, leaving us almost stranded with one who barely spoke English and didn't know where he was going. An unfortunate end to an otherwise amazing visit.

Tip: if arriving in Varanasi by plane, it's worth spending a bit more to have the hotel send a car to the airport to pick you up. You will be much more secure, and know they won't try to take you someplace else.

What I liked most:
- Location: on the river, quiet and inspiring. Cozy hotel
- View from the room (you are on the ghats)
- Dolphin restaurant on the rooftop: good choice of indian food and incredible views

What I didn't like
- Bathroom in the room: tiny and uncomfortable (shower IS the bathroom)

Room Tip: Boom a super deluxe room with the view (only 2 rooms on each floor): the view on the river and on th...

Walk out the front door and the River Ganges greets you. The location is incredible for exploring the Spiritual Heart of Varanasi. There are many stairs to climb, so be prepared. Staff were professional, courteous, and very helpful. The roof top restaurant serves up a tasty breakfast. The views of the River Ganges will take your breath away.

Room Tip: The front rooms overlooking the River Ganges are simply divine, and give you an incredible birds-eye...
