It does not stop there either - staff are very friendly & helpful - do not hassle - guest house well positioned between main Ghats (walk to a cremation not far - boat rides from available from outside hotel) Guest house easy to find - locals know of it - on this budget I do not think you can do any better!

Room Tip: Ask for room no 403

The reviews and view convinced me to book a room at this hotel in Varanasi. We booked a "Maharaja Toom" and called to make sure we got one of the domed rooms overlooking the river. It was everything I'd hoped for. A quaint domed room with a little balcony complete with two chairs to watch the ghat below.

We booked a cab through the guest house and were a bit surprised when the cab driver stopped where no Ajay Guest House could be seen, but then a young man came up and greeted us, telling us that a car would be unable to go the rest of the way to the hotel. He then led us on through fascinating little alleys full of interesting daily scenes, kindly pointing out obstacles (cow pies, motorbikes) so we could avoid them.

We ended up using his (Vicki's) services as a guide for part of our stay and he was a pleasure to deal with - laid back, informative and helpful. We also got to see bits of Varanasi that we would never have seen on our own.

The hotel seemed clean, and the food at the roof-top restaurant was quite tasty. We meant to eat elsewhere during our three day stay, but somehow time constraints always got in the way and it was a relief to be able to fall back continuously and with no regrets on the hotel restaurant.

Room Tip: We booked a Maharaja room and then called to confirm one of the domed rooms. It was on the second f...

This place is close to Ganga, thus easy to take a swim or a boat or a stroll, has a sunrise restaurant . Helping people at the desk that can give good advice, but not 100 % accurate. Basic rooms are good for the price paid I think.

We stayed at Ajay Guest House for 3 nights, and after the first night there we considered moving to another place. The only reason we didn't move was because of the hassle!

The only thing going for this hotel is its location. We had a nice view of the Ganges and it was only a few steps down to the ghat. If you want to stay right on the ghats then you will have to walk there from the main road as the alleyways are too narrow for the auto rickshaws.

The room and bathroom were very basic, with mould of the walls.

We checked out a couple of other guest houses along the ghats and found a couple of others which are priced the same as Ajays but with better rooms. I'm quite surprised that this place is rated quite high.

The staff were not particularly helpful or friendly. The rooms were not cleaned at all during our 3 night stay.

The restaurant has nice views too, but the food was just okay. Don't bother ordering any western food there and their Indian food could be better. Watch out for the monkeys!

Wonderful view - I say that up-front. It is up to you if you think this will outweigh other problems.

Problem no.1: Difficult to get to. All taxis and rickshaws will take you only as far as the main road. The old town with its narrow streets is unsuitable for them. For the rest of the way you have to carry you luggage by yourself. Or find a coolie. It took us about 20 minutes to get from the road to the hotel, the road was terrible (no way of pulling your suitcase if you have one with wheels - broken pavement, cows' poops and garbage everywhere).

Problem no. 2: The manager shuffled us to another hotel next door, whose name I don't remember. We got a room with the view we wanted (btw, wonderful view from a balcony!), but it was rather small and most of the walls were covered by black thick mould. Our friend's room had exactly the same problem. Good for short term stays, but staying there a week - no way.

Problem no. 3: Mosquitoes. Bring something to kill them. I do not blame the hotel for this, if you want to be close to the River of Rivers, this is the price you pay.

Problem no. 4: Breakfast. We had it included in the price, but it was rather basic (one toast with butter and jam and a small cup of tea). We have seen better ones.

They also claim to have wi-fi in the reception area, but we did not manage to connect (they gave us some password, but it didn't seem to work).

But if you don't mind any of these - go ahead. The ghats are right below the hotel (there are steep connecting stairs to get on the bank), the place is wonderful day and night. Lots of monkeys - so make sure to close the door at all times (one of them got in our room and stole us some fruit).

Arrived early on the morning too early to chek in so we went upstairs to the restaurant for some food. Food is ok. Don't be put off by the cage around it it's to keep the monkeys away from stealing your food. Room basic but clean we and running hot water etc v good we met a guide called Sunil brilliant lad he took us where ever we wanted to go and also took us out for a sunrise and sunset boat ride. It's a defo recommendation. He explained what all the buildings where etc v good. He also took us to the golden temple and a silk shop. Nice hotel
