Stayed here with family (9 people inc 2 kids) during our first visit to Varanasi in April 2014. Walked in (courtesy some diligent hotel hunting by senior members of our group after we arrived at the station) to neat and clean ambiance and the perfect place to rest. The best part of the hotel is the view of the river. The sunrise is breathtakingly beautiful from here. A close second would be definitely the food. Fresh and home-made. And chilled beer too!
Service is top-class, while the rates are absolutely southwards. It's right at the ghats and a short walking distance to practically everything in Varanasi including Vishwanath Temple, Kachori (Khau) gali, restaurants etc.
A must visit. Definitely recommended.

Room Tip: Even if you don't get a room with a balcony, the central courtyard cum restaurant (accessible 24...

We stayed there in a big double room with an extra bed (we are a family with 2 kids). The room was very clean, the staff very helpful, the restaurant perfect (you should ask for a cold beer) and the location just in the right place. We surely recommend this hotel if someone want to be near the ghats and the river.

Alka Hotel is one of the best hotel we met in India and Varanasi: the rooms are clean, confortable with very good beds, a clean, large and functionally bathrooms and with a wonderdful view on Gange: in fact every room is on a balcony and you can see the sacred river and his people. The owner of the hotel are wonderful: with great disponibility and kindly: you will have no problem for everithing, for example they can organaze trip boat on Gange whnw sunrise. Mr. Neeraj will be alwais ready for every your desire. The hotel has a quiet garden, is far from traffic and confusion, in the hart of Varanasi; the hotel has a very good restaurant too.

The only criteria we had while choosing a place to stay in Varanasi was, it had to be on the banks.
So, Hotel is bang on the ghat. The view from the hotel is breathtaking.
But thats all the good i can talk about the place.
It is 5-10 min walk from the nearest cross roads, and the walk is not at all a pleasant one. You have to cross teeny tiny roads full of animal waste to reach the hotel.
And god forbid if you are travelling with a lot of luggage. The day when we reached Varanasi, there was no portar to help us with the luggage. Carrying all the luggage by ourself, in maddening rains, in the path that was full of dirt.
I would specially mention the rude fellow at the restaurant, it was like he is perennially angry with his life. every time we ordered food, he would welcome us with a grunt. It was so annoying.
And during the checkout, 8 times the guy at the reception called us to vacate the room, that too well before the check out time.
Considering that we were travelling with an infant, the hotel could be a little helping and lenient, but it was opposite.
Anyways, the owners brother, was a real gentle man, and very very helpful.

Room Tip: Choose the room overlooking the river.

Varanasi is a fantastic destination for exploring the holiest Hindu city, with a huge variety of things to see and do - with plenty of accommodation options to boot! But for the second time we have chosen Alka Hotel.

Alka Hotel is where you can get the location you want, at a price that will leave enough in your wallet for lots of Varanasi adventures! Right between uptown and downtown, with views of the beautiful Ganges river, this hotel offers all of the amenities you need. Perfect for families, solo travelers, and everyone in between.

We stayed 4 nights at Alka Hotel and it was the most enjoyable experience, we wished we could have stayed longer. Right from booking stage till check out, everything was perfectly managed by Mr Mukesh Sharma (Munna baiya) - the hotel Manager. This hotel is hidden in a maze of laneways featuring vibrant shops, beautiful temples and shrines, monasteries, old buildings, cultural and religious diversity and glittering attractions to keep everybody entertained. Not forgetting the cows and bulls along the way.

Overall I would rate it as a very enjoyable stay as the location and rooms are great but there are areas of improvements especially at the restaurant area where the venue requires a little upgrade. As usual my detailed review consists of the following:

Location
There's probably no better place to stay if you are planning to visit the Kasi Viswanath temple and have a holy dip in Ganges river. The hotel is located just by the river bank and guests at the hotel can have awesome sunrise view from the hotel balcony as early as 5am. One can access Ganges river via hotel's gate. We had 4 days of good dip in holy Ganges and returned to the room hotel for shower and change. So convenient. No hassle of dressing up then and there by the river bank. As for Kasi Viswanath temple - just a couple of minutes walking distance from the hotel. The famous Ganga Aarti happens every evening on the banks of the Ganges River is also located 5 minutes away from the hotel. Again you can view the devotional ritual from the hotel balcony. Full marks for the location!

Check-in
Since we had 3 luggage and arrived midnight from Mughal Sarai train station, Munna baiya had arranged for a pick up. The driver was courteous enough to wait right in front of our coach upon arrival and carried our luggage to the car. He then dropped us by the road and 2 porters from the hotel came over to carry our luggage to the hotel in the maze lane ways. We were told check in will be done in the morning was directed to our room immediately. Thumbs up !!

Heritage room
This beautiful room is furnished in a comfortable contemporary style, comfortable king-sized bed, sitting area and clean bathroom. This room was actually much more than I expected from my previous trip last year. It was spacious and it couldn't have been more perfect. The room is beautifully decorated and inviting. The balcony offers panoramic views of Ganges River. Watching people coming down the river in early morning, taking bath in the Mother Ganges and performing rituals is always a unique experience. My elderly mom had 4 nites of good sleep without any noise. What more can you ask for.

As for the in-room facility, I would highly recommend for the hotel to have Tea and coffee making facilities with complimentary drinking water bottles.

Breakfast
Breakfast in Alka Hotel is homemade, simple and ample. I love their tea a lot.

Restaurant
Simple and open concept but during summer the heat is unbearable. I strongly suggest the restaurant's roof to be changed. No point sitting there at 1-2pm when you sweat like mad as though the hot sun is right on top of your head.

Housekeeping
We did utilize the hotel's housekeeping service on two occasions and they passes with flying colours. We asked for tissue rolls to be delivered to us as we ran out of it and these was sent to us within short period of time. On another occasion we asked for the bed sheets to be changed and they responded well.

Wifi
The internet speed is awesome, I could easily face time via iPod & iPad to Singapore without any buffering problem. Son was occupied with YouTube videos. It was good but I belief it should be made complimentary.

Checkout
Standard check out time is 12pm. Thankfully the check out was relatively straight forward and was done in less than few minutes.

Varanasi Tour
Special thanks goes to Munna baiya for making this trip even more spectacular than our previous year trip. Right from Kasi Viswanath temple prayer to viewing Gangai Aarthi and having the lassi from the famous Blue Lassi restaurant and getting pure silk Banaras saree from Sarala Silk Factory, everything was more than perfect. I went speechless with his arrangements. The kind of attention to the detail given by Munna baiya is fantastic. Coming back to Kasi for second time is simply because Munna Baiya hosted us well, making it a Majestic trip. I cant thank you enough.

A perfect relaxation destination close to home after days of pilgrimage trip. We're already planning on coming back next year!!! Thank you so much Munna baiya for helping to make our visit to Varanasi so perfect, a heartful thank you and Alka Hotel team !!!

This review is almost a five but i think what lets this hotel down a bit are some of the reception staff who have a poor attitude. One guy who deserves huge credit is Munna who is friendly, commited and in a different league customer service wise to any other person at the hotel. I undertook a fascinating city tour with him and thoroughly enjoyed every minute thanks to his insightful commentary. I found the food superb and overall Varanasi is a magical place.
