Located 5-6km away from the main ghats, I picked this hotel mainly because it offered a pool.
Unfortunately the pool area was dirty und shabby (probably because it was off season). Although there were several employees (apparently responsible for the pool area) they were pretty much ignoring me.
My room was very, very basic but clean and offered a balcony. Still, considering the rates I expected something much nicer.
My main issue with this place was the staff. While everyone was quite friendly, they were not very customer orientated resp. were unable to arrange a tuk-tuk, send postcards, etc... It was extremely frustrating.

Hotel bar and spa were amazing though, great service, very attentive staff, amazing masssage (recomment the full body wrap and the aroma facial)

This hotel dates back to the first half of the last century, when hunting tigers was the enjoyment of the ruling elite, as manifested by old photographs adorning the walls in the dining room. Unfortunately, modern fire safety codes, as far as they exist in India, have not yet reached this building, which should be a major concern and are the reason for my low rating. There are 200 feet long dead-end corridors without emergency exits, ten times the permissible length by American standards. There is one obscured central staircase, but not a single exit sign pointing toward it. Therefore, in an emergency one could easily run into a dead-end corridor with possibly dire consequences. Needless to say, there are no smoke detectors in the rooms either. Further, an old fashioned room key must be inserted into a key pad inside the room to turn on the power. However, that presents a dilemma at night, since removing the key turns off the power and in the dark it was very difficult to find the key hole at the door, even under non-panic conditions.
The room would have been quite adequate considering value for money, if it was not for the ugly wooden door right in the middle of the window wall, obstructing the view to an otherwise nice balcony, overlooking a pleasant garden. However, this door was a cheap repair for the original glass door and is not typical for other rooms. Limited kudos must be given to the ever present cleaning crews, swinging their brooms up and down the long corridors in monotonous rhythm. The cleanliness of my room was a bit selective. While over-all very good, it did not include some very dirty light switches in the bathroom, which I cleaned myself with tissue paper, soap and water. Incidentally, the light switch represented a curiosity quite common in Indian hotels and most certainly inspired by the Indian propensity for making things more difficult and complicated than they need to be: The afore mentioned light switch had row of 7 toggles and it was somewhat like playing a mini piano before the desired light would come on. Another couple of “mini pianos” were in the bed room, no less frustrating. Last not least, the smudged walls needed a fresh coat of paint years ago.
The complimentary breakfast was very good. However, it took 10 minutes for four waiters standing around to notice a guest had arrived and maybe wanted to have a cup of coffee. Oh, well. The lunch and dinner menu had a good selection of dishes, fine-tuned enough to not set the tender western palates on fire with too much spices and was quite tasty. Food, wine and beer were remarkably cheap. Service was mostly attentive and courteous.
The manager/apparent owner of this place, who also runs the tourist office, is an overbearing rotund gentleman with a sonorous voice, who ignores friendly greetings by his guests and whose vocabulary does not include phrases like “good morning” nor the words “please” or “thank you”. He just bellows at you: ”You pay 500 rupees!” and literally throws the change back at you without a word. Even his very reasonably priced excursions, of which the dusk and dawn boat rides on the river Ganga are unforgettable, did not make up for a total lack of courtesy. It didn’t matter much anymore when one morning I was waiting in the lobby for about 35 minutes, only to be informed that my tour had departed already. They had forgotten to call out my room number. However, the hotel provided another car fairly promptly. You win some, you lose some.

Thank you for taking the time to review us on TripAdvisor. After reading your review is seems like you enjoyed staying with us very much. You complimented the rooms, our restaurant, our service, prices and tours. I'm sorry that you didn't find our building up to American standards, but that is one of the great things about traveling. It gives you the chance to expose yourself to how different other places are. Our staff you mentioned in the travel office is neither a manager nor owner, and while his English is not perfect, he is well intentioned and does his best to help our guests with what they are looking for. I am glad to hear that although you missed the departure of the tour (we don't call out room numbers nor would our morning staff know that you had booked a tour without informing them), that we provided a private vehicle for you without any additional charge. We will use the constructive feedback in your review as a tool to help in training. Thank you.

The staff at the Surya Hotel was very very friendly (particularly the lady at the reception, sorry don't know her name)...they were very flexible and arranging (allowed late check out, prompt at answering queries). The rooms were good, we booked two types, standards & premium (or deluxe)... if you can afford it definitely go for the more expensive ones, these rooms are massive we great amenities (fridge!). The hotel itself is nice, the restaurant serves good food in generous portions (may take a while though), internet is working well and the swimming people is MASSIVE. The breakfast in the morning is GREAT (wide choice of indian, continental, breads etc)
Note that you won't be near the Ganges, it's a 20/30 minutes rickshaw ride from the hotel...
I would definitely recommend this hotel for Varanasi

A high quality hotel at a very reasonable rate. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Our room was very comfortable. The restaurant offers a very good buffet breakfast and excellent multi cuisine fare for lunch and dinner. The spa is very good and there is a large pool (it would benefit from some shade, we could only swim in the early evening). The evening boat ride on the Ganga is excellent, the trip to Saranath was interesting but too short and included an unwanted shopping stop. Varanasi is a fascinating city but can be dangerous, we were threatened during a morning walk along the Ghats and advised against going out of the hotel on our own after dark. Spa treatments are cheaper in the morning.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the courtyard at least one floor up.
