Beautifull property, that gives you the idea that it has been there for over 100 years. Huge rooms with amazing decoration and an eye for details, like a bag, with two sunheads, two beachtowels and two sarong, for an outing to the beach, that is 300 meters from the hotel. We had our own snookertable at the terras. I can be short: this is defenitly one of the nicest hotels I have been in.

I laughed on arrival - from reading a previous review about a broken lounge in the driveway (from the hotel in front) it is still there but now joined by another broken lounge - but that is Bali! The Shaba was tucked away behind its sister property - it is the Jewell in the Crown! We were thrilled with our suite - so much better than what you see on the website. Minor things: As a villa, just be aware that there is no room or pool service. We tried ringing the reception for assistance but there was no answer. On arrival, they could have explained the room a little better as we had no idea where the sir conditioning controls were and when I rang - no answer. We had lunch at the cafe at their sister property and it was disappointing. The spa is great. Breakfast each morning was lovely- just avoid the crepes. In the villa they make the best coffee in Bali - anytime you want it. Loved the Shaba and will definitely return.

The Shaba is a very good place, you will be welcome by nice and friendly staff. The environment and the decoration were so fantastic, we took a lot of photos. As this is a small Villa, we understand that the service would not like those chain hotels. We appreciate the breakfast very much, we sit inside the big kitchen and watch the staff to cook. The location is really good for us to go to Jimbaran beach, only take 10-15minutes walk. It’s true that it is difficult to find the hotel because not famous and the entrance is a bit difficult to locate (in fact, it is just opposite to Intercontinental Hotel).

Room Tip: 3 suite only

As the previous reviewer (A&MForrest) already described, we experienced more or less the same. (They have an ipod system now, compared to that review)
With no doubt the place is beautifull, i think a must see. We stayed there one night and it was enough for us. I am not sure if that is the lack of service, or the poor food served at their restaurant, or just that is was enough.

For us it seemed like they took more care of the villa then of the guests.

If they just improved a few things, they place would be perfect.
1. Get a real cook in the restaurant. For me the food was... bahhh
2. Do something about the service.
3. Change the entrance to the villa. (now you enter via a carpark)

Actually those two things were our big minuses for this place, people wo book this place are permitted to have these expectations, because you pay a lot of money for this place.
Still we enjoyed this place because of its beauty.

We loved the spa here, it is also very beautifull and very reasonable priced, compared to the rest. Also the treatment was as i expected.

A lovely little place tucked off the road. Quiet and peaceful ... a great place to get away from it all. The rooms are done up with a 'bohemian attitude', and are generally spacious and well-appointed. The shaba is a single-storey home, 3 large suites for rent, all with en-suites. The staff will close the shutters from the outside at the end of the day and open them after you are up and about for breakfast. Just be aware of the timing and you'll be able to preserve your modesty.
The pool and 'common areas' [dining, living, study areas] are inviting and very relaxing. We had the whole place to oursleves and the staff were attentive to our needs. We hardly went off the premises and were very happy to just lounge around the pool and in our room.
Next to the pool is a small swamp that adds character to the house. The swamp, though, emits a smell particularly at noon when the weather is the hottest. Nothing some mosquito coils or citronella can help mask when you're baking in the sun.
Choose from a variety of food from the menu - from Indonesian, western to morroccan. Breakfast was huge and our son enjoyed his chocolate croissant and bacon/eggs.
The wife enjoyed the Henna spa treatments and this is also a popular spa with hotel guest from nearby properties.
We certainly enjoyed our stay here and thought that 3 nights here was rather short!

We stayed here for 6 nights as part of a 2 week holiday in Bali. Our overall impressions of the Shaba were mixed: we eventually had quite a nice stay here, but there is so much that can and should be done to improve the experience and make the $300 per night stay more worthwhile.

Our first impressions were terrible. We arrived through the shared car park with a broken sun lounger lying in one corner and a miserable looking porter who took our bags without a smile or a hello. We then went through into the office of the Villa Balquisse, the adjoining sister property to The Shaba, which functions as the reception for both properties. The office was dark and basic and the greeting we received was 'hello, can you sign this please and can i have your passports'. There was no 'welcome, how was your journey etc'; this wasn't the kind of welcome we expected - we felt as if we were checking into a hostel or a campsite! When we were shown to our room, we weren't given any information about the facilities - even the basics like when/ where breakfast was served etc.
The room and bathroom were stylish and large. We were supposed to be in a suite with a living area (according to the website) but we were never sure if the adjoining living area was actually for us to use as sometimes (when there were guests in the next room along) the doors were bolted shut and it seemed that the same living area was accessible from that 'suite' too.
The facilities in the room were poor: no i-pod or music system as stated on the website, a poor quality TV with limited channels + limited choice of old release DVDs, a temperemental remote control, and a broken telephone! There were no hot drink facilities in the room and we couldn’t always get room service as some members of staff refused to serve hot drinks in the room and said that food/drink weren't permitted and had to be served in the main lounge. This was baffling as there was a room service telephone number and a note in the room saying that complimentary tea/ coffee could be provided…
Finally, the room was very poorly lit and you either had to fumble around in the dark or compromise privacy when getting dressed as gardeners etc walked past the windows all day.

The pool area was lovely and lounging by the pool on the comfortable sun loungers was great but as the staff were based at Villa Balquisse, you usually had to phone the reception there to send someone over to take orders for drinks or lunch. As they didn't always answer the phone or necessarily send someone over, you often had to phone again - usually this was too much hassle to bother with! There was another issue with the pool area – an overpowering sewage smell that occasionally wafted over!!
Many of the staff were nice and friendly but there was a real lack of professionalism and a sense of apathy among some of them. The cost of staying here is within our usual ball-park but the service here was the least attentive that i have come across. I definitely think that this is a training need and not an issue with individual staff members.

On the plus side, the food was excellent and breakfasts in particular were superb. The spa provided good quality treatments at reasonable prices. Also, one of our best days in Bali was our 'free driver for a day' provided by the Shaba where the driver was lovely and helpfully suggested some amazing stops on our planned route across the island.

Overall, the property itself is beautiful but the facilities and service are not in line with a 4/5 star property and we feel that The Shaba has some work to do to justify the 4/5 star prices.

We had a fabulous stay at the Shaba. It is a stunning mansion converted into a three bedroom boutique hotel, with huge kitchen, media/internet room, dining room, pool table, and a great pool with plush loungers and outdoor dining. Tea and treats are served by the pool every afternoon and ice water is refilled regularly. The food is prepared to order and is excellent, with quite a diverse menu. You must try the indonesian tasting menu! And the attached spa is fabulous! We had massages, facials, mani/pedi and exotic treatments--all were reasonably priced and heavenly.

We chose this hotel instead of the four seasons because we were traveling with a 10 month old baby. We got a beautiful bedroom with a playroom attached (for a very reasonable price). They set up a great baby bed (not just a travel cot) that even matched the decor of our room. Their staff are terrific with babies and someone will always babysit. But don't be put off by this review if you don't have babies--it would be fantastic with two other couples and no kids as well! (And it's only a 2 minute walk to the beach--but the pool and hotel is so nice that we hardly ever left).

Our only complaint was the noise due to renovation on the sister property. And some of the guests from the other property were using our pool. But I assume these problems would no longer exist, as the renovation is probably finished.

Overall, the Shaba is stunning and the service is fantastic. We cannot recommend it highly enough.
