“Wonderful Stay at The Shaba”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 October 2012

The Shaba is a romantic, private villa located in a tropical oasis just a hop, skip and a jump from Jimbaran Bay. With a full service spa, gourmet restaurant and gorgeous swimming pool onsite, there wasn't much reason to leave the property, but with so many exciting restaurants and a beautiful beach right down the road, The Shaba equaled the perfect holiday destination in Bali. Not to be missed.

Tucked away just behind Villa Balquisse is a gem of find - an entire extremely spacious villa with only 3 suites with its own kitchen, pool, dining room and library. The elegant interior furnishing is colonial French with a faint touch of Balinese influence.
Wife and I were welcomed into a huge suite with a bed piled with silk pillows and cushions, a stand-alone bath-tub filled with warm water and flowers, and the entire decor smacks of elegance. Down to the electrical outlets with old brass dimmer switches, the interior details are immaculate. We did find the room a bit dim though.
The staff was wonderful. Upon our arrival at around 2:30pm, we had a late lunch prepared in the villa's kitchen by own personal chef. He also prepared our breakfast the next morning. His attention to detail is superb but he needs to work on his cooking skills though. He did, however, created one of the best coffees I have ever tasted.
The private spa offered a fantastic massage at a pretty reasonable price (200,000 rupiahs for 1 hour) and we had all the facilities of the pool all to ourselves.
Don't expect room service or the front desk phone to be picked up should you require anything. Just ask the attendant on duty for whatever you require. This is not a hotel but more like a private residence.
We highly recommend The Shaba for its tranquility and elegance. We will definitely return.
Hint: Book directly through the hotel web-site for their package deals. Airport transfers are not included if you book through other travel web-sites.

My daughter and I were staying at Villa Balquisse, having a lovely time, when we poked around the property and came upon this stunning villa around the back. We enquired with Made, the excellent manager of the Villa Balquisse, and he told us this was The Shaba, a villa comprised of three rooms that can be rented, along with a gorgeous kitchen, dining area, study, pool and outdoor area. We jumped on the chance to stay here, especially as no one else was staying in the other rooms. So in essence, we had the villa all to ourselves. WOW!

The Shaba bills itself as colonial chic, and indeed that is exactly what it is. The rooms are full of exquisite, slouchy fabrics and details like lightswitches on velvet cords with a great big tassle at the bottom that you pull to turn on and off the lights. The villa is built around a central courtyard with a beautiful fountain and huge lanterns. The kitchen is pretty sensational - not that you'll see it that much, as there is always a staff member (we loved Mina and Koman) to look out for your every need. The dining area in the villa is formal and gorgeous - original tiled floors, lots of mirrors and flowers. There is a wrap around porch that surrounds the entire villa, and the sweeping expanse of lawns in front give privacy without making you feel too excluded. The pool is perfect size and if you head behind it, you will stumble upon an outdoor bathroom that is very special. My daughter and I stayed in the largest of the three rooms, which included a bedroom, large dressing room and large bathroom. We're talking original wood and tile floors, gorgeous rugs, divine fabrics all around, and freestanding tubs (along with gorgeous shower rooms!) Even the fabrics on some of the walls were to die for - no surprise as the property is affiliated with a great store in Seminyak, Haveli, home of some of the most beautiful silks you've ever seen. Each of the suites has a living room and incredible, large bathroom, and each is decorated totally differently. All amazing - though I think one suite is a bit smaller than the other two.

We had the villa to ourselves, which was perfection, and I'm not sure how the villa would be to share with people you didn't know. If you time it right though, you may be able to have it all, or if you are traveling with friends or family, the villa is an excellent option in Jimbaran. Please see my review on the Villa Balquisse, as well.

Bottom line - you must stay here if you can!

Room Tip: There is a larger suite of the three, but we quite liked the middle suite because of the gorgeous c...

I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough:
The staff are exceptional.
The food is exquisite.
The setting divine.

Here are a few thoughts...

The bedrooms are so chic that you find yourself in a dichotomy: you don't want to go to sleep, you just want to enjoy the surroundings, but it's so comfortable in bed with the sweetest smelling sheets that you simply cannot help but drift off.

Arrival was easy and I was shown to my room to discover a bath filled with warm water and rose petals.

The staff were attentive when you needed them and silent when you didn't. Breakfast was yummy: I'm surprised I had room for lunch... and afternoon tea (served as a little thoughtful surprise extra whilst lounging by the pool)... and dinner...

Wafts of fresh jasmine remind you you're in the tropics.

The pool was almost always empty - no noise except birdsong, cicadas and distant French / opera / jazz music (not at all obtrusive).

The gardens are immaculate.

The interior design is exceptional.

The massages in Henna are the best I've ever had.

And don't miss taking a trip to the the poolside loo. The best 'loo with a view' in Bali, I'm sure.

Want to lose yourself and recover from any of life's stresses? Go to The Shaba. It's the perfect retreat. I shall definitely return.

Room Tip: Any room at The Shaba will be lovely. I don't think you need to worry! I stayed in Shaba 2. But...

I recently celebrated my 50th birthday at The Shaba and adjoining property Villa Balquisse with 20 family and friends. Zohra the owner has created a special colonial villa with unique warmth and charm. The attention to detail in both properties was wonderful and dreamy! Our stay was so easy and seamless and included a wonderful sit down dinner for 30. The staff were always lovely, incredibly attentive and really helpful making our stay an unforgettable experience.

Well done Made, you made it a stay I will never ever forget!

Beautifull property, that gives you the idea that it has been there for over 100 years. Huge rooms with amazing decoration and an eye for details, like a bag, with two sunheads, two beachtowels and two sarong, for an outing to the beach, that is 300 meters from the hotel. We had our own snookertable at the terras. I can be short: this is defenitly one of the nicest hotels I have been in.

I laughed on arrival - from reading a previous review about a broken lounge in the driveway (from the hotel in front) it is still there but now joined by another broken lounge - but that is Bali! The Shaba was tucked away behind its sister property - it is the Jewell in the Crown! We were thrilled with our suite - so much better than what you see on the website. Minor things: As a villa, just be aware that there is no room or pool service. We tried ringing the reception for assistance but there was no answer. On arrival, they could have explained the room a little better as we had no idea where the sir conditioning controls were and when I rang - no answer. We had lunch at the cafe at their sister property and it was disappointing. The spa is great. Breakfast each morning was lovely- just avoid the crepes. In the villa they make the best coffee in Bali - anytime you want it. Loved the Shaba and will definitely return.
